How many of you do you actually crave for Thai food? I am one of them without denying I am a fan of thai food because of the spicy and sour taste in their food. Last round when I went to Bangkok with my friend we seriously had like 1 day 6 meals trip that suppose to be a shopping trip that I had transform it into makan trip.

In Penang to find nice restaurant that serve Thai food is actually not many and I can tell you that Chok Dee Thai is one of them. Many of my friends love this restaurant as I often see them check in foursquare in this outlet. To me, its quite hidden actually as I have pass Burmah Road many times without realizing actually there is a restaurant until last round I was back in Penang, we have a small little makan gathering with my best friend which there are 13 of us.. The usual 2 or 3 will only turn out. That doesnt bother me, as long as I can order many food to eat.

This shop serve Pork! nice ahh~ How can you enjoy Thai Food without pork dishes. On the downside, I find that the pricing is a bit more expensive compare to many restaurants available out there.

This restaurant is not huge but its longish that can accomote limited people in the outlet, best to advice that you head there early if not you have to wait for first round of dinner crowd to get over then only its your turn. We reach early and its quite empty, as the place just got filled within 20 minutes. My best friend know the owner as he is one of the regular there.

Love the decorations of the outlet that resembles some Thai influence even the cute doll also welcome you, Savadeekap~

For a classic drink in Thai Restaurant I usually wont miss their Lemon Grass, indeed its refreshing and the lemon grass taste is quite solid, just as I prefer.

For me, to try out a Thai Restaurant Tomyam I would always go for their clear soup base which is the authentic taste from Thai not the fiery red tomyam we usually have which is only Malaysian style. Clear Chicken Tom Yam did not fail to impress us as Collen drink every sip and keep praising every sip of it. Its a bit spicy after taste, and more towards sour that is why most girl will love it. By far I think this is one of the best clear soup I have come across. RM19

Green Curry Chicken that is cook to perfection that the curry is not too watery nor thick that just perfect to go along with rice. A few basil leaves to make the taste a bit more kick and a bit creamy taste is just as expected. RM12

My heng tai Tatt keep asking me lai lai, please feature me, so he take a dish and ask me to snap. Thai Seafood Otak-otak @ RM16

Another dish that I wont miss is the Otak-Otak that one thing we got deceive was it look huge but in the middle the have like a mini bowl to make it stood round. It was cook till the curry well coated with the seafood, a bit creamy sweet and sour, hint of strong basil taste some might love it some do not. To me it was just nice.

This is what Tatt said must have. Their Pork Knuckle which cook in Thai Style. The meat cook till soft and juicy that fork can easily remove the skin and the meat. The fat layers in between, to eat along with the sauce and rice just make it a superb dish~

Since we have clear soup base, as for fish we head for their signature spicy steam fish. All of us just love the soup base, spicy enough yet sour after that. Colleen again keep drinking the soup non stop.

Another dish highly recommended by Tatt is Claypot Prawn with Glass Noodles @ RM45.00. I would personally recommend this too.

Mango Sticky Rice

Thap Thim Krop @ RM4

Overall of this restaurant certainly this Thai Restaurant stood out better in taste and more towards Thai on sour and spiciness. If you are craving for nice Thai food, no doubt that I would recommend this restaurant, just be prepare to pay a bit more as I would say, compare to KL , just cant be compared.

-= Ka Ching =-

Food Rating 8/10, quite good in Penang~ -Stamped-

–Warning– This is based on my individual taste. Try it at your own risk-

In Malaysia, we have many types of Kopitiam, ranging from Hainanese, our traditional weekend joint nearby a market or at your favourite shop most of the time. I come across to most kopitiam have their own style of cooking especially those more to homecook style. Surisit The Thai Kopitiam is the latest joint that offer thai authentic cuisine that start to operate in this industry that hidden right in the heart of Taman Tun Dr.Ismail which is hidden right behind CIMB back area. .

You can find alot of Thai authentic food out there, with one good thing about this place is that you cant find many Thai Food that serve PORK and this is one I come across that makes us keen on it.

The kopitiam is easily spotted as its the only kopitiam that operate with pale orange colour lighting and wooden plants and wooden chairs right outside the shop.

If you travel to Thai, a few types of chili will be placed on the table to suits you or to spice you up.

Soya CinCau @ RM 7.90

Start off our first dish with Pucuk Paku Yam Pla or kerabu pucuk paku @ RM14.90/15.90. I find this dish is very appetizing or maybe I love sour taste to start off with, not only that, this dish is served cold and once start eating eat, I cant stop as it taste sour, little spicy and hint of coconut. – Recommended~

Next dish that is served that steal our hearts away instantly is this very fragrant Mun Thod Gapi @ RM16.90/24.90 or crispy fried pork served with their own home made chili. It was good, with its crispy skin, and the texture of pork is soft and evenly seperated out with some slices are filled with fats that some of my friends like it, and I love mine with just some fats. This plate was gone instantly. . Recommended~

Kheng Som Pla @ RM32.90 known as sour orange curry fish with vegetables. Its another dish that not to be miss when dine in a Thai restaurant or usually you would either order this or the fried fish. For soupy fans, you might enjoy this too as the fish is fried first instead of steam then bath with the soup. The crust of it is crispy, then eat along with the sour spicy soup. The soup is pretty additive to me tho . .

Pla Neung Prik Ma-Nao @ RM32.90 is another dish that must look out as the fish is deep fried then sprinkle with fine chili, lime, garlic and spring onion on top of it make it a bit challenging to eat as I cant really take spicy. This fish was evenly distributed with some people like to eat the fins, heads as it is very cripsy and fragrant yet best part of all, the fish is fresh as the meat is soft also must eat along with gravy on top.

Thai style fried egg omelette or Cha Om @ RM9.90

Kao Klut Gapi @ RM14.90/18.90 or belacan fried rice that serve along with sweetened pork

Then you just mix everything in the plate . . .. The combination of all flavours makes it extra kick, with cili padi, yet you get to taste sour lime as I squeeze both lime on top and young mango, then sweetened pork gravy.

We always would prefer go traditional as original tomyam is in clear soup just that malaysians had made it to fiery red style tom yam and we still stick to trandtional ones, comes this Tomyam Ka Moo @ RM25.90. The soup is good as it was cook along with pork and was very sourish just that it was not spicy as we expected, then after that we ask the person, they said this is the standard taste and we can request it to be spicier which we would next round~

Torb Tim Krob @ RM5.90

So far, Mango Pulut (Glutinous Rice with Mango) is offer in many Thai restaurant, this is quite good as the mango is very fresh, soft sweet and juicy, then eat along with soft sticky rice which top with coconut milk that makes it frangrant to eat along with the sweet mango @ RM8.90

Definitely this will be our another Thai restaurant to be in our hit list and we will definately will come back for more, as the chef actually allow us to order things off from the menu or just tell him a budget and he will prepare good authentic thai food for us. Just that need to book 3 days in advance. If you are looking for good thai food, this is one to hunt for. . Recommended~

Starting from tomorrow, muslims around the world will start fasting for one month and most of the restaurants are taking opportunity to offer best food at the right price. One of the place that we came across which is hidden at Ampang (seriously hidden) which is Intai-Intai Restaurant. I was curious and ask the owner why this name was chosen, as he said, intai means peek therefore you need to take a peek to know where is the restaurant, the restaurant served Halal Thai food .. . .

When we were having good times at Songkran water festival (click here), Jonathan suggest that a restaurant that we must not miss and its highly recommended, which during last round of his trip there he did not manage to eat it as the restaurant is so sardine packed! Then on that day, he said that no matter what die die also must go, then lead us walk one big round in the city area as we read the map wrongly. As we walked towards there our stomach is already growling and we are all drench too as we constantly meet some people that station right out from their house to attack on passerby.

Restaurant Kan Eng is one of the famous local restaurant that attracted a lot of Malaysians to dine there too for its quality and one thing that surely attracted a lot people which is the price of the food, Its very cheap!

In the menu offer a lot of local varieties, which is most of us would want to eat but that day we have decided not to eat something spicy as in the morning, we really had spicy food till our tears and sweat all dripping nonstop yet scared that we had fun during the water fight then stomachache.

Jonathan was our captain for the night, we leave him in charge of the order as we were busy eating food that we ta pau on the way walking here, would even said that we attack nearly all the stalls that we come across.

The food was served fast, and start off with ‘Salted Veggie Intestine Soup’, its a good dish to start off with, as I love the salty and sourness of the soup and the pig’s spare part was cook perfectly that it is very chewy and I love to dip it with soy sauce.

‘Otak Otak’ is one of my favourite that I would not miss when go for thai food, I just love the taste of it which is not very milky feel, yet its seafood in this. Juicy inside out, that it is not steam till it is solid.

‘Kerabu Chicken Feet’ which is one of the famous local delicacies, and it was marinated very well, that the sourness and spicy soak into the skin yet its juicy and chewy as it is suppose to be. Some people might find this eerie as its chicken feet skin.

If you go to thai, and a dish that you must order which is ‘Braised Pork Leg’ without eating this, the makan session would be complete. Braised till the skin its soft that you use fork to open it up, it slide in so smooth and the mean pop up open. The meat and the fats is so soft till it feels like melting on the tongue and eat it with white rice is just perfect.

I forgot what the name for this vegetable, but its one type of my favourite veggies, fried not so long to maintain the crunchiness of the veggie and cook it plainly to get the best taste out of it, or another way to order is with sambal but Thai doesn’t have sambal.

‘Fried Oyster’ Some of them love fried oyster, but for me I just love our Malaysian version.

We were very satisfied with the dinner and ‘katui’ serve our table really good, and in Hatyai, do not worry about language barrier as now they can speak Cantonese, Mandarin or Hokkien (which is quite shocking for me) Total damage for the night is around 1000bhat which is around RM100 that we feel is really cheap. A recommeded restaurant if you do visit Hatyai.

-= Ka Ching =-

Food Rating 10/10, veli good, Recommended ~ -Stamped-

–Warning– This is based on my individual taste. Try it at your own risk-

Continuation of my road trip up north, after overnight at Penang for a night for some leisure and food hunting, and next after at the boarder getting stamping and head to a very nice restaurant introduce by Karen and quite well know to a lot of Malaysians too which is a restaurant by the lake side (click here).

This is the kind of queue that you can expect at the boarder but we were there early and a day before, therefore it is not a hassel. Took us about 35mins to get through.

The whole gang sot sot, as early morning already went to the duty free area and hantam beer already as cannot deny that the beer is very cheap with a large can of Heineken for around RM7 if not mistaken and each of them already had 2 cans each.

After lunching, we drive up further north into the city of Songkla to check into our hotel. It took us about 35 minutes drive to reach. With no choice to choose from the list as this trip was a pretty last minute decision, the only hotel left that nearby the city was Hotel Daiichi and the rest in the city center are all fully booked as mostly a lot people from far and local came for this festival.

When we went into the room, I was so shock of the room condition as if the floor had not vacumm for the past 5 tenants as I can see nuts, and it is very dusty, with my barefoot step onto the carpet, this is the first time I feel gross. With charges of RM175 for this festive season, I would say we have no choice but to bare with it for these two nights. Only one phrase would never return back to this hotel again.

One of the most famous transportation in Hatyai or Thailand is this mini car, which they called it ‘Tut Tut’ with a charges of 20baht (= RM 2) per trip regarding on the distance within city area, it is one of the most convenience transport that they have as its everywhere and every corner.

We were exhausted from driving, as for the first thing to do when we reach in Hatyai is to do massage first. They offer one of the cheapest massage.

‘Siam Traditional Massage’ was one of the place introduce by Karen. If you compare the rates in Malaysia, your jaw will drop not only the time frame but with the RATES! RM24 for 2 hours, can you IMAGINE that… for the whole 2 hours for only RM24 as I could not believe it myself. In Malaysia it can be easily RM 80 – RM100.

While we are waiting this is what we do. . .

And three of them are on casting to host for upcoming makan makan channel that introducing what is nice as we going to shoot for fun ourselves. 3 of them pass!

what is next?

Street Shopping. . . .

Since when I was a kid that my parents brought me over to Hatyai for the very first time, I was so amaze with the air gun here and hoping with all my hear that I can actually own a few for my own collection and the price is very cheap, RM45 jus for one piece.

But one of the good thing is that sometimes preventing from people owning one would be a good cause for example case like this, one would be eating too much that cause him to suicide cuz cannot support the input of the other half.

This is the area where you need some drink and prepare used all your bargaining power to buy cheap stuff.

Next as this is one of the market nearby Lee garden which is about 10 minutes walk (about 3 blocks away)

In this area, it is more compact and easy for you to look for the food and stuff you wanted to buy but the alley is just ngam ngam 2 person walkway.

After everyone been happy shopping, and stomach started to play drum, we went for another street food hunting again next to the market and wanted to go for restaurant which is highly recommended by Jonathan( which I will blog later).

‘Fried Chicken’ @ 15 Baht

I don know what is this, but it looks like Taiwan sausages.

unique in taste but of course do not mind to try it out. 10 baht

Next is we head for the fried pork bacon. A pack of full small pastic size only15 baht. Bite till your jaw got numb.

One of the best street food that you must not ever miss is the ‘Mango Sticky Rice’ 20 baht per pack with one full mango inserted in it.

this stall has unique sticky rice and its very flavourful.

2 minutes walk from that stall we saw this kuih stall with so many people then we also stop by to look at it. My gawd!

So many variety of it and all also look tempting. Then we bought every thing one piece as the owner previously reluctant to sell us in that order as he sold a packet of 3 pieces in it. 10 baht per pack.

If you do eat ‘Chai Kuih and Bangkuang Kuih’ in KL or Malaysia, then this is the Thai Version.

The night version of the ‘Tut tut’ is very different. This one that we took is lighted with blue neon and one of their favorite song that would blast away is Vengaboys – Boom boom boom. . . if you still remember this song.

Went back to hotel to drop all our heavy load of shopping bags and round back to Lee Garden there to see how their night life is.

With the army team lead by fierce and not so human Karen to the war.

and without weapon we could not go for war and here finally I saw the gun that I like with white and blue colour.

Buy –> store –>> load with water and prepare to go war!

With this very nice guy he is selling us each gun for 250 bhat which is a good bargain so Jon bought one too.

the very yeng seller that constantly shoot by kids.

This is the eve of the water festival and every one is already at war! We went back to HQ (hotel room) to take the rest of the gun and declare war with these people. . . . !!!!!

Food in Hatyai is very cheap cost from 50-500 bhat! with our currency which is RM1 – 10 Bhat
How we go for war? look out for next post!

Last week, me and my colleague were so excited on our very first trip up north, to be more excited is that, we are going on for a road trip start off from KL –> Ipoh –> Penang (stay over a night) –> Hatyai for Songkran water festival which is their New Year.

I will be skipping our makan trip in Malaysia and head to our Thai Boarder, we start off our journey early in the morning 7am during the first day and eat all the way up north till Penang. Then we continue our journey again early next day to the boarder to avoid long queue in the immigration area as a lot of Malaysian are entering for the festival, as there is once my colleague stranded there for about 3 hours just to get the passport stamped.

As we drive into Thai and I come accross some great info from Star Online that one of the guy went over, he sure do cover up the details to those who are driving up as below:

Just a guide for those who want to drive into Thailand. [1]Original or photostat copy of vehicle registration in the driver’s name is required for our Malaysian border Police checking and for the Thai Customs officer at their immigration checkpoint to issue an “Import/Export” permit for the vehicle. Those driving company vehicles have to obtain a letter of authorisation by the company to allow the driver [you the visitor] to use the vehicle. I do not recommend visitors to use company car because if there is an accident or car stolen, the reporting and recovery procedure is very complicatng and long – very messy.

If you intend to drive a lot fill up full tank at Changlun cos petrol in Thailand is much more expensive – I think at least RM3/- per litre. Buy a one-week insurance cover for RM19/- at any of the tour agencies in Changlun, at the same time pay RM1/- for your Thailand imigrattion card to be filled up. Never give a ride to strangers and never carry some luggage for them – especially when departing from Thailand.

As all our makan itinerary been planned by Karen as Thai is like her second home with her assistant Jonathan. The first stop for the early lunch was this famous place Water View Restaurant which is highly recommended by Karen and her friends, that locate right at the boarder. The journey driving in is with the feeling of, we got kidnap into thai and ready to be sold to some strangers as the road is small and through a small village back alley.

It just took about 10-15 minutes to reach this restaurant from the boarder.

When we reached, we hopped off our car and faster head to the restaurant as we were very hungry and hot as when we were toast at the border and just cant wait to get a glass of coconut or cold beer and this place is huge. It is like another small village out from the town.

Of course, new place in another country, will usually start off with some photoshoot and camwhore.

Yen Ling and me posing Kau kau while the rest went to water the plant~

I think this is where all the restaurant people staying in by building their own homes. Interesting!

A glimpse of the village restaurant, that build up upon the lake.

When we walk to our sitting place, I got so fascinate by the place love how the decorate the place in a traditional concept, kampung style decoration, by using dry coconut leaves to build as the roof, low table for us to sit in and pillow to support us when we are lazy, one thing great about this place is we have a fantastic view by overlooking the lake and hills. We feel so relax even though it is very hot and as if we are in sauna but with a glass of beer just chill us off.

This is the kitchen area, one thing unique about this place how they serve the dish will be a few pictures below.

This shows how big is the restaurant and what I have been and what I have been told, if you do come during dinner or the night session, it would be even nicer as the whole restaurant is light up beautifully but will miss the scenery. I guess, we cannot take one stone kill two birds.

Dinner time, this place is usually very packed!

our nice scenery that overlook the lake and hills.

camwhore session is not to be miss.

If you are thinking of giving birth, it might be a good place too with natural surrounding in kampung style.

I just love this picture so much, with Yen Ling is like so jealous over the two of them.

Although I am from Penang, but if you are asking me to tour you around the mainland, I am sure I will be lost or drive till another small town (of course do not mention the main area), but I have heard my friend mention a famous Thai food is nearby her area and also from my cousins. It was not until to plan out to meet up one of my best friend that had not keep in touch for quite some time and I had arrange dinner over there. Do not know where the place is and met up with a few of my Penang friend went over to my best friend which she is getting married few months time.

We reach there pretty early, about 7-ish and there is whole big parking located behind the restaurant and when we drive in, we was amaze how big the parking space is and the amount of car had nearly occupied the whole area.

The restaurant is decorated in very kampung style, with dry leaves and hut in the middle.

The main area when the restaurant was first started, after 3 years in business they had expended tremendously that makes them one of a famous thai restuarant in the neighbourhood that had attracted quite alot of people to dine there.

First order of the night comes out with ‘Lumpanan Chicken’ RM18 (L). The chicken meat is soft yet the outer layer was cook till abit crust as it is suppose to be that soak the aroma of pandan.

‘Otak-Otak’ @RM20 (L) is one of my favorite of the night, with its santan mild curry flavor yet filled with fresh seafood and mix it with rice, is something that I cannot stop eating while talking. It looks big but nits not a big portion as in the middle of the plate there are a wood place below it to make it looks like big portion. Recommended~

‘Deep Fried Prawns with Starch’ @RM12 (S) was recommended by my friend, deep fried to golden brown, crispy on the oustide yet dip it with the sauce given, taste much better by pulling the aroma out.

When ‘Seafood Tom Yam’ @RM 32 (L), the soup base is quite lime sour, spicy and with fresh squid and clamps I would say not bad as I still feel the one in KL Ah Roy Thai taste much better.

‘Mee Hoon’ @RM2 that to accompany on the tomyam soup, is something not to be miss.

‘Fish with Spicy Sauce’ @RM34 is the spiciest among all the dishes we had. A few sips had made my lips look like sausage and tears also about to burst. The fish had been deep fried well, and the spicy soup base that accompany with it, makes it a challenge. Very spicy yet I still want to eat it. Then my best friend’s eat like, ha, spicy meh? No ah..she finish the whole thing like there is no chili in it.. -_-“ , then only get to know that the spiciness level she can withstand is seriously high!

Overall, I find the place is not bad and the price of the total bills comes to around RM200 which is reasonable. One advice, to avoid frustration is reach there before 7pm to avoid the crazy crowd.
