watermelon cake penangWhat i read in google is their Watermelon cake is their famous signature. Turns out to be better than expected. watermelon is the whole piece as not the dehytrate version. Kinda fresh and cripsy. Natural sweetness is there, the cream is not too sweet and the base is pretty decent.

Goes well with their coffee. Not the acidic kind that suits to my liking.

Just saw I have some pictures over this and I tried Xing Fu Tang for the first time when they open their outlet in Kepong. One of the reason did not hit to SS15 is because of the crazy queue. Xing Fu Tang finally in Malaysia had make its famous mark of boba milk tea in overseas.

Xing Fu Tang (1)

Xing Fu Tang in Kepong was one of the first few outlets expansion in Klang Valley. Queue every where was crazy and their menu is very simple. Just a few SKU and with their signature as below.

Xing Fu Tang (2)

Brown Sugar boba is cooked fresh and stir right infront of you. A lot of friends told me that it us so unhealthy when they put the hot brown sugar n boba into the cup. It to me a while to come into realization that izint what we have our take away food in “bungkus version” and noodles are hot?

Xing Fu Tang (3)

Xing Fu Tang (4)

Their signature drink is rather simple. A coated brown sugar around the cup, filled with milk, top with another layer of sugar then burnt it to melt to create a crips layer for you.

Xing Fu Tang (5)

Xing Fu Tang (6)

While waiting for your drink, try your wish luck from this massive stick. See which of the stick stick out compare to the rest, take the stick out and see what is the number then match back on the little pockets on the wall. that will be the luck of what you wish for.

Brown Sugar Boba Milk  @ RM 12.50

Xing Fu Tang (11)

Well, I have tried a few outlet of Xing Fu Tang even all the way for Xing Fu Tang in Penang. Conclusion is different outlet different taste but this branch in Kepong is pretty good.

Love the brown sugar taste which is slightly quite strong, the little biting crips from the burnt sugar and fresh milk is prominent. the flavors blend well.

Xing Fu Tang (12)

If you ask me what is my fav brand right now, I would say The Black Whale (a local brand- that I have yet blog). Xing Fu Tang remains top 3 in my list for their signature series.

Whenver I am back to Penang, I will try to head over to famous BM Yam Rice 大山脚芋饭 at Bukit Mertajam, Penang as one of my favourite dining place. They have been operating this place for more than 30 years and it is a family run business. Over past 1 year, I saw this place had gaining tourist traction and might as well I start to blog about them.

Selected as Michelin Recommended since Dec 2022

BM Yam Rice (1)

What to have here? They are famous for Yam Rice or we call it “or pui” serve with a mix bowl spare part of pork. Inclusive blood, intestine, pork balls, pork slices, pork kidney and others. Each bowl are made upon order and currently, you will have to wait at least 30 – 45 minutes for your order. It used to be only 10-15 minutes.

BM Yam Rice (2)

BM Yam Rice (3)

One of their signature tofu. Just look at the colour and texture.

BM Yam Rice (5)

BM Yam Rice (6)

For yam rice, you get to enjoy the rice which is slightly dry, fragrant with soy sauce and fresh yam along with dry shrimps. Still using charcoal to cook, thats why the aroma is slightly different.

BM Yam Rice (7)

My usual for 1 pax. Cost about RM 15

BM Yam Rice (8)

BM Yam Rice (9)

BM Yam Rice (10)

Their special chili paste is a must dip.

BM Yam Rice (11)

There are quite number of Yam rice in BM however this taste slightly different with its salted veggie and broth. Give you a nice balance of both flavors yet the rice is not too salty from dry shrimp yet just compliments well.

Enjoying my pippin hot bowl of Yam rice and I think they are the best Yam Rice in Bukit Mertajam and maybe slowly making its mark in Best Yam Rice in Penang. There are afew also in Chai Leng Park. Apparently this place is also quite famous. Do give it a try at Raja Uda (click here)

However, for KL folks – dont be sad as they  have branch here too. In Publika non-halal food court is operate by one of their family members which I constantly go. Taste is quite similiar.

I also found out another outlet in Kepong that is also operating by one of their family members where the soup taste is more towards Salted veggie.

Little did I know that in the heart of Bukit Mertajam, there is this street that is famous for Cup Rice. One particular street that have a few stalls selling this and one of the famous one that my friend always eat is this Bm Cup Rice 大山脚盖饭.

BM Cup Rice (1)

This is one of a comfort street food in Penang that is quite well known in this little town. A recepi being pass down to generations and easily you could find 3-8 stalls along this area. As for this stall, currently this is the son that is taking over from his dad as this stall is easily more than 45 years in history which started in the mid 1970.

BM Cup Rice (23)

Seating capacity is only about 8 tables and you are assure to be fighting for table during peak hours. But most of his customer are here for take away. He also mention that there are customer from JB and SG usually order in bulk that could be store in freezer. Can last about 2-3 weeks after reheat.

BM Cup Rice (2)

Price still remain on the cheap side and this is pretty unique.

BM Cup Rice (3)

Fresh Roast chicken.

BM Cup Rice (5)

Each of the cup rice are all steam in the pot below, pack accordingly and drench with their home special sauce.

BM Cup Rice (6)

BM Cup Rice (10)

BM Cup Rice (14)

For dine in, they are putting into a plastic plate and top with layers of different parts of the meat.

BM Cup Rice (15)

The traditional CUP rice is like nasi banjir. Drench in thick sauce and you can just eat it like that. I order Extra Meat @ RM 7.00 with mix meat.

BM Cup Rice (17)

Find the taste is very interesting, salty, goie, some light fragrant of herb taste if I am right. Rice is soft and fluffy.

BM Cup Rice (19)

A simple dish that makes up your quick lunch.

BM Cup Rice (20)

BM Cup Rice (21)

BM Cup Rice (22)

Simple pack of Cup Rice is at RM 5. Well, if you are in the area, I think it is worth to come to try at least once where this is not the kind of street food you will find in Penang Island.

Was on the way back for my cousins wedding last year and my bro did not want to head back home to freshen up and decided to park ourself waiting for 2 hours before the wedding dinner to start. Therefore, I look over the web to see which cafe that we can stop by and found this one, Gathers Cafe which I believe is a family operate cafe.

gather (1)

Gathers Cafe park themselves in this industrial  park area that make them pretty prominent and well know to the young peeps around that area. What caught my attention the most is their offering for waffles.

gather (2)

gather (3)

A cafe in this area with this interior is pretty impressive compare to a few more nearby. . .

gather (4)

and of course wrote this post pretty late as it took place Christmas last year. 😀

gather (5)

gather (6)

gather (7)

Liege Waffle is their signature in the outlet and drinks price is pretty decent.

gather (8)

Coffee art also something simple and nice as I was given Rudolph for my latte @ RM 8. Mild coffee which is not too strong on the after taste makes them pretty good.

gather (9)

This was their signature during that festive period as it was snowman set that were given a shot of coffee, a snowman ice cream, with both combination makes it affogato,  chocolate and mash mellow.

gather (10)

gather (11)

gather (12)

Their homemade waffle quality is pretty impressive as the taste is not bad, yet was being introduce with a slice of cheeze and garlic on the top and its pretty small in size that makes it RM 7.

gather (13)

Creamy Black Pepper Mushroom @ RM 7 is a bit weird for me and certainly their sweet waffle range do look good.

Maybe will come back in the future when I drop by to visit my friend or cousins as this outlet is located in the mainland.
