This past Chinese New Year, I was like unleash the dragon my own hometown where by I move around to hunt some food. Well, back to some places that I have not been visiting long time with my parents is this Restaurant 77 Food Yard were known as Kedai Kopi Kwai Lock where host some pretty nice hawker in this early Pulau Tikus Wet Market Area.

food yard (1)

One of a most busy hawker area where its sardin pack with many hungry people, from people who went exercise around nearby park and with auntie and uncle that just finish doing their morning market shopping.

food yard (2)

To get a place here is like the usual, you need to be quick or stand behind those people that are eating. You need to have an eagle eye.

food yard (3)

Oh well, lets put that aside, as One of a common thing that people whole order is this Famous Koey Teow Th’ng (ah Eng & Son) and also their kuih Chap. Not to say its pretty good but decent enough to satisfy your crave.

food yard (4)

Kuih Kak here is also not bad. worth to try.

food yard (5)

My parents usually come here for this Duck Soup Mee Suar as not many places left that serve this. Apparently they are famous in this kopitiam.

food yard (6)

Run by this couple and its been in this kopitiam for the past 5-8 years and they prepare this clear duck herbal soup in a miniature pot and by steaming it a few hours before its officially serve to customers like us. You can put it in a way like double boil in kopitiam version.

food yard (7)

food yard (8)

food yard (9)

Each bowl serve with duck drum stick and you get to choose what kind of noodle, ranging from Mee sua, bee hoon, mee or mix. I usually prefer mine is mix.

Soup is mild herbal taste, something very simple and light for breakfast and if you do expect strong taste of it, do skip it.

food yard (11)

Was told by my dad that their Curry Mee here is pretty good though and decided to try it out. Soup is with slightly sweet end and by adding in their home made chili paste made it extra umph! I would prefer to add in another half spoon of chili paste to make it extra kick. Decent enough for a simple cravings and I do prefer my favourite in Green House.

It was Chinese New Year break and on the second day, we do not know where to go then we head into the mall as the weather out there is killing us. We need some place with air conditioned, as was heading to Gurney Paragon for a coffee session then suddenly thought of this place that my friend, Vernice insta about a very nice pancake in this mall.

then quickly make the decision and hunt for it. At first it was pretty confusing as we were walking around 6th floor and could not find it till we realise there is a outside area, and the shop is really located on the outside area that is facing Kelawai Road.

brown pocket (1)

Brown Pocket is one of the new coffee shop that being establish in this mall and it has gain its popularity among younger crowds. As I was told by my friend that this shop is being operate by 2 young lad and true enough to find out that one is 24 and one is 26. I guess that coffee concept industry are now being establish by young blood which is a good thing.

brown pocket (2)

brown pocket (3)

Brown Pocket offers a simple cozy place to hang out for coffee with friend and family. .

brown pocket (4)

brown pocket (5)

and guess who I saw here. Euniceeeeeeeeeeeee, as she also came back to Penang with her parents.

brown pocket (6)

brown pocket (7)

Interior here is pretty simple with the center area that build like a tree area and table placement is pretty spacious that it does not cramp up.

brown pocket (8)

Menu are pretty straight forward as their signature here is coffee and pancakes.

brown pocket (9)

Latte @ RM 9.90

brown pocket (10)

For a start of a business a glass of latte is pretty well done, quite impressive and taste is pretty good, not too robust and just nice.

brown pocket (17)

Affogato turns out to be good too as coffee aroma is there and not too bitter and the ice cream that they use pairs well too. @ RM 8.90

brown pocket (11)

Mix Berries Yogurt @ RM 11.90 – homemade yogurt layered with berries compote and granola. Is one of my friends favourite that the yogurt is smooth and they end up order another glass.

brown pocket (12)

Cold Matcha Latte @ RM 11.90 is much better than Miam Miam . .

brown pocket (13)

Ice Blended Oreo @ RM 13.90

brown pocket (14)

Triple Chocolate Liège Waffles @ RM 14.50 serve in one small Waffle, served with 3 different types of Chocolate (White Chocolate, Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate)

brown pocket (15)

So you can imagine how small the pancake is as a scoop of ice cream nearly cover the whole top part.

brown pocket (16)

Waffle is not bad as its soft and have certain aroma to it, and if its being bake in the stove for slightly longer, it would then be  a perfect one. Among the three chocolate I find that milk chocolate is very sweet and their dark chocolate is the most perfect one. Not too sweet yet pairs well with the chocolate and waffle. Set back is not being warm enough as when we are trying to pour, it had thicken.

brown pocket (20)

Red Valentine @ RM 12.90 serve with fresh strawberries, ice cream, whipped cream & homemade strawberry sauce.

brown pocket (18)

Mix Berries Pancake @ RM 13.90 – served with mix berries compote and ice cream.

brown pocket (19)

Comparing to the waffle, their pancake stood out more as its more fluffy and warm enough yet with a little fragrant in it which is just nice.

Remark: Just 3 months on its opening, their operation is still in a mess and if you do order their waffle and if its in peak hours, do expect a waiting of 60-90 minutes. Service is still pretty bad and best if they do self service which is still much better for drinks.

I am sure they will improve down the road.

One of the latest landmark in Penang that open its door to public that had create quite a hype by some of my Penang friends is a new shopping mall, Gurney Paragon. Upon its build up, this mall is position as one of the high end shopping mall for Penangnites. As many malls also pretty much know with a few signature F&B and there are a few actually. Since I am back, I drag my Penang friend along that they have just went to this shop last weekend before me, and they were saying, its a High End tea. 😀

One of a big hype that I see over Instagram for a few posting is on their dessert is this new French-Japanese cafe & kitchen Miam Miam that named after the French expression ‘yum yum’.

Miam miam (1)

With its classic interior design that still maintain its flooring of this old building yet contemporary set of feeling infuse along that makes them lively cafe with a curious mix of flavours from savoury souffle to pasta.

Miam miam (2)

Miam miam (3)

Miam miam (4)

Miam miam (5)

I love their design of kitchen that certainly have the European feel and as for Cashier is a little island by itself.

Miam miam (6)

Miam miam (7)

Its a very simple 4 pages menu with everything is right into your face with picture illustration. Everything in there looks tempting and of course I do see what other people order. The food is predominantly French or European but with Japanese influence in each.

Miam miam (8)

Some of the food, are pretty unique.

Miam miam (9)

Miam miam (10)

Iced Matcha Latte @ RM 11.80

Miam miam (11)

Miam Miam (Hand Dripped) Special Blend Iced Coffee @ RM 9.80

Miam miam (12)

I love the presentation of this coffee that serve in a bronse mug and with a little milk & sugar syrup holder. It makes me feel that this little two thing is used by that cute animation Ratatouille. The so called special blend coffee is nothing to shout about.

Miam miam (13)

Mango Smoothie is blended well and with strong visible taste of mango and its not bad. @ RM 11.80

Miam miam (14)

Famous French Toast @ RM 16.80 – with homemade whipped cream & Maple Syrup

It seems that this is another famous item in the menu that, alot of people in the cafe is ordering it.   The baked toast prepare fresh and served in a pot, with whipped cream on top of it. A mini tea cup of maple syrup is placed beside the pot where is to be added upon.. The toast is done perfectly that its soft and fluffy yet aromatic with maple syrup after I pour it in. Best to eat while its still hot. Its not easy to make a nice one but they had made it perfect. – Recommended

Side note: there is no consistency in it as my friend came along with me on the her 3rd time, it taste very much different as when she had with me, this is the best so far.

Miam miam (16)

Classic Vanilla Souffle (Pot Baked) @ RM 16.80

Miam miam (15)

For this dessert, I have tried quite number of places and nothing had impress me till this outlet. This is where I saw alot people instagram on it on the best of they can get in the island and I must agree with most of them, it easily beats many of the available KL f&B outlets too.

Miam miam (17)

Its serve pippin hot as every pot is being prepare fresh. The texture of it is so light , smooth and airy that spoon easily poke thru till to bottom. Upon on each bite, taste of egg and light vanilla is pretty evident texture of it easily melts in mouth. Not many people know how to enjoy this dessert and its best advise to share. A recommended Item`

Miam miam (18)

Chocolate & Banana Souffle Pancake @ RM 19.80 is something different from their classic/original range, that is topped with a few cubes of banana and 2 chunk of chocolate with Ice cream. The souffle is pretty much different compare to the original ones as this taste more like a soft pancake yet the texture is still smooth.

No doubt that this place had made its impact to many Penangnites on its dessert range. If you do not mind to dig deeper into your purse, this place is a great hang out place. Two item that you must not miss is their signature Classic Vanilla Souffle & French Toast.

It has been long long time since I last came to this coffee shop and I think the last round I came here was bout 12 years ago, during college time. Used to come here to have our breakfast weekly before class and since then did not really come over. Its one of a famous kopitiam, New Cathay Kopitiam known for breakfast that you will be spoil for choices, as the food here are pretty good.

new cathay (1)

Till last holiday, went for hiking and came down, then my friend keep asking me where to eat and I mention why not go back to our old kopitiam and he mention good idea where he also did not go there for quite a while.

new cathay (2)

As usual, I will order my few favourites in a shop and I am suprise to see that this Curry Mee stall is listed as one of a top 10 food to eat in a online guide and my friend told me that their business been so good that make them actually a star in this kopitiam. They also got feature in Penang Food Trail and Rasa Rasa Penang.

new cathay (4)

All the classic food are available as you name it, most of the food you can get it here, from Char Koay Kak, HOkkien Mee, Char Koey Teow, Wantan Mee, and many more. . .

new cathay (5)

Not only that, this kopitiam had gain its popularity to many tourist, as the table I am sharing, have Indonesians, Ipoh People and Thai people.

new cathay (6)

Oh, one of my favourite Indian Apam as Penang version is slightly different to those in KL. Right in the middle we have an egg that makes it flavourful. I forgot to take pic of it. 😀

new cathay (7)

HOkkien Mee here are pretty good as the soup base are pretty sweet with prawn head taste and I always love mine to have lots of Chili to make it extra kick.

new cathay (8)

Although Curry Mee are listed in food guide and online guide, I find that the soup flavour is pretty mild with coconut taste and the curry paste they have is slightly different. The squid sauce that make it slightly sweet that doesnt comes to my liking. I prefer other places but well,

new cathay (9)

This is not Chinese Pan cake, but more like a modified version and used to be famous back in those days and now, I guess many prefer hawker food and I still find this pretty good,as its filled with Banana, raisins, egg and pair with my kopi kau just nice.. @ RM 5

If you are in Penang, you can put this kopitiam as one of your hunting ground for breakfast. . Wan TAn Mee here is quite another signature too. .
