Little did I know that actually Penang do have good cofffee. It was a recent gathering with my friend Kevin that he introduce me die die must vist Stairs coffee which is his all time favourite now in Penang as KL visitor. Just realise that they do have alot of outlets in Penang and the first one I visited was Stairs 46Nordin at Nordin Street Penang. best cafe in penanghidden cafe in penang

Love the ambiance as it is not the usual cafe vibe that you got. It is kinda like a bit of bar & cafe combine. I believe they declare that they have the longest bar cafe table in Penang.

As I scroll on the  menu, Kevin said no need scrool. Order his all time favourite “Dirty Latte” which he misses alot. O

Then for the first time I saw this Omakase Coffee. Usually you heard in dining and here they got it for RM 35 only. GIve it a try lo. Since cheap. Was explain carefully by the barista that you would not know which bean he is using, but with them analysing the drinker, they will then pick the beans which think suits your mood of the day

Follow by a drink that will be transform into 3 different varity in the same cup. That excites me.

I cant remember which FB page have posted this place and it went viral. Even my dad know about this place and he insist to bring me here for lunch. So we head off to Half Acre Restaurant 半畝田台湾甕窯雞 at Balik Pulau, Penang. It is about 30-45 minutes drive if you are coming up from heritage zone. Famous for their Taiwanese Bake Chicken Style.

Half Acre Restaurant (1)

What I understand is that the lady owner told us that her son went to Taiwan, bought the recipe and trained there for 3-6 months before coming back here to operate the restaurant. I have never tried the hanging chicken in Taiwan and it seems it is a very famous dish in one of the small province.

Half Acre Restaurant (2)

Using clay oven with fierce fire and wood at the bottom to cook it up. Each urn only cater for 1 chicken. So do prepare to wait for a bit on their famous hanging chicken.

Half Acre Restaurant (3)

There are indoor and out door sitting. If you are seated inside, it is quite dim for photo purpose. Even though we made a booking on that day, but it was chaotic. No difference from walk in.

Half Acre Restaurant (4)

This is the famous Hanging Chicken or known as Klin Roasted Chicken @ RM 45.

Half Acre Restaurant (7)

Half Acre Restaurant (8)

As for Penang popular signature drink in Balik Pulau, do not miss out their home style Nutmeg Juice with Asam. Certainly will make your face smirk with its punch of sourness and indeed very refreshing as I always like it. Do give it a try as the taste might be quite unique too you.

Half Acre Restaurant (9)

Upon the serving onto the table, the aroma of roasted chicken is just amazing. The roasted chicken is serve with 2 special dipping powder and some of the juice ooze out from the cooking process.

You have two options to dine this chicken. The classic way is to eat it by tearing it off just as it hang there with plastic gloves ready for you. Another is by the lady boss to cut it into pieces and put onto the plate. We chose second method as I need to take pictures. When I am back next round, certainly will be enjoying it the classic way.

Half Acre Restaurant (13)

The chicken is roasted to perfection. Punch with marination flavour, soft and juicy on each bite and best to dip it with their powder which I believe is cumin and another (i do not know) :D. I ended getting another dipping power as it is soooo goood!

Half Acre Restaurant (12)

Half Acre Restaurant (10)

This is not the usual China Style Salted veggie spicy fish soup but the Tawainese style is equally good too. Turns out to be quite good as I did not put any expectation. Creamy style like KL Fish Head bee hoon, fragrant with Chinese white wine, fish is soft and each mouthful is satisfying.

Half Acre Restaurant (11)

Half Acre Restaurant (14)

This place indeed serve pretty good hanging chicken and if you are here do not miss it out. One of a must order dish. One of a good local Taiwanese food in Penang.

Whenver there is any order coming in, then the gravy will be prepare next and just shower ontop of the noodle and we have red char siew on top.

Most of my favourite place already close down cuz no successor and also lesser demand.

No.19 Lam Mee

One of the  most classic food that i miss is this and now left only handful of stalls that is operating and most of them are by old folks. I guess if they retire, this dish will retire too. the unique about this is coloured pink egg, top with some pork slices, shrimp and each stall of their own special soup broth. Another secret ingredient is their home made sambal to add onto the noodle. Either you eat it as it is then only mix with sambal after that to see on your liking.

Why is this part of the list because the famous ones are only left handful and most of them retired. One of the main reason also Penang version serve the dough warm compare to KL left it on the place and eat it cold as it is. Peanut base powder is slightly more rough and more fragrant.

22 Street food must eat in Penang and of course, there are still many other street food available in the island and I felt that these are the few that are really the main food that most of you should try. If you are not too sure where to go at night, then check out 16 Speakeasy Bar in Penang.

Loh Mee is another food that I think will lose its legacy soon. Not many stalls in Penang that serve decent bowl of Loh Mee. My last weekend trip, my best friend introduce me this famous Kim Leng Loh Mee that is well known in this neighborhood that is located in Restaurant Joo Huat at Perak Road is still serve one of a classic bowl. They also got featured in Astro AXian Channel.

Loh Mee (3)

Loh Mee (4)

Small bowl at RM 3.80 is really a good bargain. Filled with classic ingredients such as chicken feet, pig skin, pig intestine, herbal egg, special home blend garlic vinegar sauce and also chili paste. Love the starchy soup base with a bit of saltiness and sweetness to my liking as the amount of vinegar garlic is just nice and could be better if slightly stronger.

Loh Mee (5)

Another dish that I found very classic is Penang Lam Mee that 2 most important element is the colouring pinky egg slices and also sambal base. This special sambal base is indeed very spicy and I love it. Really brings back a chilihoold memory taste, where the soup base is clear and mild flavorful. At RM 3.50

Loh Mee (2)

Found another place for Loh Mee and if any of you do find a better one that this, do share with me. Of course I still prefer Ewe Hokkien Mee stall more which is just two blocks away.

In Penang, there are tons of hawker food to hunt for, as there is this particular kopitiam that located inside this neighborhood – Island Glades. Genting cafe Kopitiam that located in this area had already been well known to the locals here since 2 decades ago where my high school is just located right beside it.

genting kopitiam (1)

This kopitiam recently had sold off its stake to a new owner and it had then refurbish a whole new clean look and spacious. A place which is well know to many of us where great street food can be found such as, Chinese Apom Balik that usually filled with banana slices or corn.

genting kopitiam (7)

This is how the new kopitiam looks like, with higer ceilings and not that hot anymore, yet looks clean.

genting kopitiam (8)

My all time favorite that I would not miss is this chee cheong fun, as their shrimp paste they have a special home recipe in it that make them different compare to the others, also another of their special ingredient in it is peanut butter. Maybe could be one of the best chee cheong fun in Penang?

My last visit back hometown, this is my very first time to see my dad got so excited to bring me one of his favourite place 15 years ago and he insisted to bring all of us all the way here which is Nibong Tebal. About 30 -45 minutes drive out from Penang Island. The last round my dad visited was exactly 15 years ago and road do change and base on his memory, he was spot on to reach our destination.

Nibong Tebal is a town right before Perak boarder and there are quite many well known eateries around the area.

Aik Chew (1)

Got to know that Lim Aik Chew is famous in this town for its fresh water prawn curry and over weekend its a crazy bunch. I am lucky that I was here on Friday very late lunch and crowd is decent enough. We were lucky that most of the fresh ingredients are running out and we were the last few to get hands on it.

Currently it enter into their third generation which is running this family base eatery.

Aik Chew (2)

Aik Chew (3)

Another signature of this place is their homemade bread.

Aik Chew (4)

Sugarcane is super sweet as there are no add on water. Do try out their Ice Coffee which is pretty good for a very local flavour. Slightly burnt end taste, bitter and sweetness of condense milk do add onto the flavour. Classic stuff.

Aik Chew (5)

Here comes our dish as they are being serve pretty quick. 5 minutes upon our order.

Aik Chew (6)

This is their signature dish, fresh water prawn curry. Cook to perfection as the prawn is super juicy, fresh and curry is thick enough with mild spices taste at the end of it. My dad mention the taste is still pretty much the same. Oh well, its very hard to get the similiar taste after operating for so long.

Aik Chew (7)

Their steam bread is a must order and must eat while its hot. Fluffy soft, tear it and dip the whole piece into the thick curry. Just perfect!

Aik Chew (8)

Fried omelet.

Aik Chew (9)

Another dish to lookout for is their fried fish in 3 flavours (sweet, sour and mild spicy). There are variety of fish to choose from, depending catch of the day. Fried crispy on the outer layer and soft meat inside.

Aik Chew (10)

The village fisherman dock is just right next to the restaurant. That’s how they get all the fresh prawns and fish. Due to demand of the fresh water prawns is high and expensive, the restaurant now do opt for sea prawns as alternative.

Aik Chew (11)

Aik Chew (12)

To locate this restaurant, you can go thru waze as it is located right at this junction. Overall, food is decent and for the price of 4 dish cost estimated RM110 in this township, I find it very expensive. Oh well, just good enough for me to try once, as with that price I can top up slightly more for seafood lunch or dinner at Tambun.
