Among so many cafe popping out in Penang, I find this new concept Cafe Space 262 坊 at Beach Street, Penang is indeed quite interesting. Combining the best of everyone strength under one roof. I think there are 5 different brands are house in this concept space.

[update 2.7.19 – some of my friends update me that this place got torn down. It was build illegally and against heritage rules] = sad to see but no choice la. heritage zone is quite strict on all expect. ]

Space 262 坊 (1)

This place is not hard to spot as it is just located a stone throw away from China House. Or just right behind the famous 2 kids with bicycle mural site.

Above is before, and as off 2.7.19 is below:

It was a crazy long weekend, hence this place is packed with people.

This is what is highly recommended by my sister @kellyBok (instagram) as the little jelly pig in the mud. The jelly pig is wobbly that give you the effect of (boink boink if you shake it). Ordered Latte here as I am lurving it. Little acidic yet with fruity end. Milk is balance well yet not overpowering. Perhaps could be one of the best coffee in my top 3 place for Penang as it suites to my palate.

The cake I think is not too bad yet not the best. just for pictorial purpose then yes. Crust is abit solid as the cake gives me the feeling like 2-3 days old. Well, still one of the best seller as most of the table ordered this.

Looking for local dessert such as thong sui with good ambiance is certainly very limited. SYST Penang Thong Sui Cafe or Tong Sui Po (糖水铺) operating in Cubo Park is indeed one of the latest hype at the moment. It is because the whole place is decorated into a classic 80’s Hong Kong theme.

The place transport you back into a similiar one of a TVB classic scene. SYST stands for Shen Ye Shi Tang, which means “Late Night Desserts” in Chinese.

SYST Penang Thong Sui Cafe

I was back during raya and decided to check this place out. It is bustling with people.

SYST Penang Dessert Cafe (2)

Ambiance of the whole place is definately spot on. I am impress too, with the owner to have such confident by putting in such investment to sell tong sui only.

SYST Penang Dessert Cafe (3)

Those who love ootd, this place is definately one of a favourite spot that you can get.

As it was only about 11pm, quite number of items had been sold out. With limited menu, my friend chose Snow Pear Soup with peach gum and ginseng @ RM 13.

with the price tag, it is indeed on the steep side. As for taste wise, I am not too sure is my palate wrong on that day, as I find it very very blend. Near to tasteless. One true fact that it is less sweet. But for such price tag, i am expecting at least some taste from ginseng or SWEETNESS from SNOW PEAR!

SYST Penang Dessert Cafe (6)

Believe this is Double Layer Milk Pudding @ RM 9. This comes to similiar taste too. Quite blend for me and a pudding at such price tag. I have no comment. Among these 2 dessert, this is the worst.

Finally, before we hit off, decided to try out their French Toast @ RM 5.50. This is one of the best, fried to perfection, peanut butter amount is just right. Crust from outside, soft inside. Indeed one of a item must order.

For the dessert, certainly believe those 2 I ordered is on the high side. What in exchange is the ambiance you are getting. Will visit again another try to try out their warm food and their other dessert range. Best of all, a so called Hong Kong theme dessert shop doesnt serve drinks such as milk tea, coffee or even honey lemon tea.

Whenver I am back to Penang, I will try to head over to famous BM Yam Rice 大山脚芋饭 at Bukit Mertajam, Penang as one of my favourite dining place. They have been operating this place for more than 30 years and it is a family run business. Over past 1 year, I saw this place had gaining tourist traction and might as well I start to blog about them.

BM Yam Rice (1)

What to have here? They are famous for Yam Rice or we call it “or pui” serve with a mix bowl spare part of pork. Inclusive blood, intestine, pork balls, pork slices, pork kidney and others. Each bowl are made upon order and currently, you will have to wait at least 30 – 45 minutes for your order. It used to be only 10-15 minutes.

BM Yam Rice (2)

BM Yam Rice (3)

One of their signature tofu. Just look at the colour and texture.

BM Yam Rice (5)

BM Yam Rice (6)

For yam rice, you get to enjoy the rice which is slightly dry, fragrant with soy sauce and fresh yam along with dry shrimps. Still using charcoal to cook, thats why the aroma is slightly different.

BM Yam Rice (7)

My usual for 1 pax. Cost about RM 15

BM Yam Rice (8)

BM Yam Rice (9)

BM Yam Rice (10)

Their special chili paste is a must dip.

BM Yam Rice (11)

There are quite number of Yam rice in BM however this taste slightly different with its salted veggie and broth. Give you a nice balance of both flavors yet the rice is not too salty from dry shrimp yet just compliments well.

Enjoying my pippin hot bowl of Yam rice and I think they are the best Yam Rice in Bukit Mertajam and maybe slowly making its mark in Best Yam Rice in Penang. There are afew also in Chai Leng Park. Apparently this place is also quite famous. Do give it a try at Raja Uda (click here)

However, for KL folks – dont be sad as they  have branch here too. In Publika non-halal food court is operate by one of their family members which I constantly go. Taste is quite similiar.

I also found out another outlet in Kepong that is also operating by one of their family members where the soup taste is more towards Salted veggie.

Tai Buan Porridge 大满清香粥 at Lebuh Muntri unarguably serve one of the classic Teochew porridge in Penang. I have not been here for the longest time. Most of the time I do not get to enjoy this shop as they only operate on weekdays. Since it was Chinese New Year and I am sick, my parents brought me back here for simple classic comfort food. A kind of Penang Street food to enjoy if you are here on weekdays.

[update 23.2: it is so sad MCO is hitting this outlet of 60 years old to closure. They will be last operating on 26th FEB 2021]

teo chew porridge (2)

Operating in heritage area, do prepare to fight with other patrons during peak hours.

teo chew porridge (1)

Operate by both husband and wife, with a push cart inside the shop to add on the feel of eating on the street but in more comfort and cleaner environment. Selection of dishes is not huge, but these are their signature dishes. Ranging from their duck spare parts is a must have! Follow by tau kua, kiam chai (salted veggie), Choi Poh egg and cheong which is my personal favourite.

Dark soy sauce gravy with their special ingredient and herbs to make the gravy a perfect combination to be added into the porridge.

teo chew porridge (6)

teo chew porridge (7)

since we were late, there are not much choices of food left. So go with the usual side dishes.

teo chew porridge (8)

My favourite Chai poh egg. A classic teo chew style where chai boh is slightly crispy and chewy in the middle, yet the egg is just fragrant and mild salty.

teo chew porridge (9)

Their signature pork meat. Slightly soft and not too bad.

teo chew porridge (10)

One of my favourite Pork intestine. Soft, juicy then top with salted veggie into the porridge is just perfect!

herb egg.

teo chew porridge (13)

teo chew porridge (14)

The most important bowl of the dishes. My grandma used to cook porridge in this texture as it is not easy to cook. Cook till the grain is 3/4 cook like it is going to be fully cook yet it must have a nice bite like cooked barley with its little soft texture. Water in porridge cant be too thick yet it is clear enough to make it a simple classic bowl of white porridge. Love it. Used to eat a bowl of white porridge when I was a kid with Chai Poh egg and homemade soy sauce. Just ass simple as that.

If you remember that Norm Cafe did make a huge buzz in Penang last year for their 2in1 concept. Cafe in the morning, bar at night. Then I was introduce by my friend to visit Norm that is famous for their waffle and located in different location at Lebuh Carnarvon. It did not ring a bell till I reach the location and find it weird, that it has similarities to the one I visited a year ago.

norm (1)

Until I walk in, the ambiance and lighting do resemblance the NORM at The Saw Emporium. Then only found out from the barista that they have relocate to this new location. Still as small as it is, with only a few table on the premises and if you come here with a big group of friends which are 4 and above, you will have a problem for seating arrangement.

norm (2)

norm (3)

Still the same, as they have their cocktail and tea corner.

norm (5)

norm (7)

this is what the cafe is famous for. Their cocktail and also their signature waffle. If were to compare to last year, the waffle had much improve. Currently it is slightly puffier, crispy and bake to perfection. Indeed a pretty good waffle and best of all, mine is rum and raisin @ RM 22. Top with nice ice cream and rum raisins on the side is a good pairing. Best of all, I pair with their cocktail.

A small little cafe tug in this dead end street. Parking is super expensive for Penang as it is RM 7 (maybe due to Chinese New Year)

A great place for waffle and cocktail. Believe coming in the afternoon will get to shoot nice pictures. Great ambiance to chill and hangout. Love my spot which is just right beside to the main wooden door. Also, could this place be offering the Best waffle in Penang?

Nothing much to do during Chinese New Year, so did some hunting to welcome back for bubble tea series. Instead of cafe hopping, we did Bubble tea shop hopping. CHATTO 茶社 Handcrafted Tea Bar Georgetown  is one of the latest outlet to be added into the list for bubble tea in Penang. Located in the edge of heritage zone, is one of the place for you to check them out before you drove off for next food hunting series.

Chatto (1)

Chatto (2)

Chatto (3)

Believe these would be their signature series.

Chatto (4)

interesting minimalist design. Wooden and white which is always the perfect match. If downstairs is full, then you can head upstairs for more seatings.

Chatto (5)

One bad thing about the signage is that – handcrafted tea bar which crafted an expectation in my head. But looking at their prep for the drinks we order, I am not  too sure what is called handcrafted tea bar. Looks like normal Tealife or any other brands is preparing.

Chatto (6)

The most recent trend is this Brown Sugar Pearl Latte @ RM 10.90. A simple drink that is filled with milk and the secret ingredient will be the brown sugar and pearl. To enhance the whole drinking experience. I find the drink so so only. For the price of that compare to others starting at RM 13 onwards, can close one eye for this. Not too sure if other places got good brown sugar pearl but The alley is pretty good.

Chatto (7)

My friend had Matcha Pearl Latte @ RM 10.90. Nicely presented in 3 tier of colours. Tasted quite flat and only finish half cup each. I am sure there are other flavours that you guys like. Do share share in the comment section.
