Ayer Itam / Paya Terubong

I cant remember which FB page have posted this place and it went viral. Even my dad know about this place and he insist to bring me here for lunch. So we head off to Half Acre Restaurant 半畝田台湾甕窯雞 at Balik Pulau, Penang. It is about 30-45 minutes drive if you are coming up from heritage zone. Famous for their Taiwanese Bake Chicken Style.

Half Acre Restaurant (1)

What I understand is that the lady owner told us that her son went to Taiwan, bought the recipe and trained there for 3-6 months before coming back here to operate the restaurant. I have never tried the hanging chicken in Taiwan and it seems it is a very famous dish in one of the small province.

Half Acre Restaurant (2)

Using clay oven with fierce fire and wood at the bottom to cook it up. Each urn only cater for 1 chicken. So do prepare to wait for a bit on their famous hanging chicken.

Half Acre Restaurant (3)

There are indoor and out door sitting. If you are seated inside, it is quite dim for photo purpose. Even though we made a booking on that day, but it was chaotic. No difference from walk in.

Half Acre Restaurant (4)

This is the famous Hanging Chicken or known as Klin Roasted Chicken @ RM 45.

Half Acre Restaurant (5)

Half Acre Restaurant (6)

Half Acre Restaurant (7)

Half Acre Restaurant (8)

As for Penang popular signature drink in Balik Pulau, do not miss out their home style Nutmeg Juice with Asam. Certainly will make your face smirk with its punch of sourness and indeed very refreshing as I always like it. Do give it a try as the taste might be quite unique too you.

Half Acre Restaurant (9)

Upon the serving onto the table, the aroma of roasted chicken is just amazing. The roasted chicken is serve with 2 special dipping powder and some of the juice ooze out from the cooking process.

You have two options to dine this chicken. The classic way is to eat it by tearing it off just as it hang there with plastic gloves ready for you. Another is by the lady boss to cut it into pieces and put onto the plate. We chose second method as I need to take pictures. When I am back next round, certainly will be enjoying it the classic way.

Half Acre Restaurant (13)

The chicken is roasted to perfection. Punch with marination flavour, soft and juicy on each bite and best to dip it with their powder which I believe is cumin and another (i do not know) :D. I ended getting another dipping power as it is soooo goood!

Half Acre Restaurant (12)

Half Acre Restaurant (10)

This is not the usual China Style Salted veggie spicy fish soup but the Tawainese style is equally good too. Turns out to be quite good as I did not put any expectation. Creamy style like KL Fish Head bee hoon, fragrant with Chinese white wine, fish is soft and each mouthful is satisfying.

Half Acre Restaurant (11)

Half Acre Restaurant (14)

This place indeed serve pretty good hanging chicken and if you are here do not miss it out. One of a must order dish. One of a good local Taiwanese food in Penang.

Whenver there is any order coming in, then the gravy will be prepare next and just shower ontop of the noodle and we have red char siew on top.

Most of my favourite place already close down cuz no successor and also lesser demand.

One of the  most classic food that i miss is this and now left only handful of stalls that is operating and most of them are by old folks. I guess if they retire, this dish will retire too. the unique about this is coloured pink egg, top with some pork slices, shrimp and each stall of their own special soup broth. Another secret ingredient is their home made sambal to add onto the noodle. Either you eat it as it is then only mix with sambal after that to see on your liking.

Why is this part of the list because the famous ones are only left handful and most of them retired. One of the main reason also Penang version serve the dough warm compare to KL left it on the place and eat it cold as it is. Peanut base powder is slightly more rough and more fragrant.

22 Street food must eat in Penang and of course, there are still many other street food available in the island and I felt that these are the few that are really the main food that most of you should try. If you are not too sure where to go at night, then check out 16 Speakeasy Bar in Penang.

One the most recent on a new concept cafe which is inspired by Jay Chou MV – Handwritten Past , Eco World has build The Lawn Cafe in their showroom Eco Terraces at Paya Terubong, Penang (behind the Sales Gallery) which is a glass-house design .

lawn cafe

The park is part of the project under their major lush green area for future residence to enjoy. With this whole ambiance, it had attracted alot of instagramers to drop by to do their best shot.

lawn cafe (5)

Seating area here is very limited where can only cater to estimated 13-20 guests from side small table to mini standing bar. It could be very warm too, if you are seated nearby the window area.

lawn cafe (7)

It seems that their cake is one of their signature as it is selling fast or maybe because it is during this festive season hence there are limited choice with limited stock up from their supplier.

lawn cafe (8)

Outside table is also very limited and under current hot weather you will be drench in sweat. If you visit at night, they have additional bean bags for you to move around and enjoy the breeze around the area. then it would be a great opportunity for some photo moments with your family and friends.

lawn cafe (9)

Coffee here is not bad, mild and not acidic. Strong coffee lover might not like it.

lawn cafe (11)

This place is indeed quite compact and you can see this is the famous little glass house cafe where currently you will come across many people instagram about it. Do have patient while waiting for your seat as you might need to stand under the hot sun while waiting. Best of it is to wait inside their sales gallery.

Penang is indeed a food heaven where there have been tons of features from international coverage on many locations in Penang, along with famous international host such as Anthony Bourdain and a few other countries famous TV host. . I guess I am the odd one where I have not really actually tried before this Famous Ayer Itam Assam Laksa that located in Ayer Itam Market which is only 5 minutes drive away from my house.

Stumbling block to this place is always a headache in both finding carpark space and also tons of crowd waiting for it in this limited seating area.

ayer itam laksa (3)

Well, during this Chinese New Year decided to make a break to it by bringing my KL friend to dine here on their request and was great enough not as pack as I thought.

ayer itam laksa (2)

ayer itam laksa (4)

Each bowl of Assam Laksa will be bath 2-3 rounds in this pippin hot soup before add in final round of soup and serve it out.

ayer itam laksa (6)

Penang Assam Laksa is filled with fine slices of cucumber, onion, mint leaves, red chilli, bunga kantan and prawn paste, (some other hawker stalls do add in pineapple)

ayer itam laksa (7)

On the first dip carrying it up, you will dig thru a generous side of vegetable and as you dig deeper, you will find their signature laksa noodle which is silky smooth, soft and slightly chewy. Soup is indeed rich in flavours, as you can see a sea of shredded fish meat that make the soup quite thick, along with hint of spiciness soup, along with some other taste as acidity and mint turmeric end.

ayer itam laksa

Here you go on one of Penang famous pippin hot street food, Assam Laksa and do not be dissapointed as the owner’s brother now have a branch in KL where it is located in Klang known as Angcle Peoh.

This place had been regard as one of a Top Hakwer food to eat whenver you visit Penang.

I guess I am like a foreigner now, as over the years, I did not know that my housing area actually do have quite a well known Rojak lok lok stall. Operate by a couple and I do pity them as when I first discover them, they are in their food truck (pasar malam version) which park infront of Toto Farlim. Then they got warn by the council and move to the location as below . . .

rojak (1)

When last week I went back (May 21) they have move again as their new operation area which is directly opposite, (right infront of Genting Kopitiam – Farlim) at the moment. Hope that they would not move again.

For this version instead of the typical lok lok car, where you see hot boiling soup at the side and you choose all the raw ingredient to cook along it, this is where you pick your fruits then you chose the rojak gravy that you want. What I mean is Spicy or non spicy?

rojak (2)

rojak (3)

Variety of fruits for you to choose from, just like instead of a rojak that premix everything for you, you are now the mini chef to mix and match what you would want to eat. Each skewers are price from RM 0.80 – RM 2 (depending on what ingredient you take)

rojak (4)

rojak (5)

If you love spicy, do prepare to be numb, drench in sweat and tears keep dripping. Its super spicy and usually I mix it with the one without spicy to get the mild spicy taste.

rojak (6)

Usually I would spend around RM 5 here with at least 5-10 skewers.

rojak (7)

Since their existing, other vendors, slowly joining the task force. One of the guy that park next to him previously is this uncle that sells laksa, follow by a food truck opposite that sells Soya Bean and the latest addition is Fried Oyster.

rojak (8)

rojak (9)

To eat in this stall, its a very typical road side concept whereby you are given only a chair, you have to hold your bowl and eat, like what the uncle is doing.

rojak (10)

For me, to make it look more concept, I borrow their umbrella foundation rock to be my mini table. How’s the taste. Its quite mild in taste that doesnt give you the extra punch, mild sourish and if you are craving for one, you can close one eye and enjoy it. 😀

rojak (11)

oh well, I basically just eat nearly anything. Bon Appetite.

Location:
Lintang Angsana, Bandar Baru Ayer Itam 11500,
Penang (right in front of ToTo and Magnum 4D).
(now they have move right infront of Genting Kopitiam as at May 2015)

Business Hour: 12pm to 7pm
(will finish earlier if their business is good on that particular day);
Closed on every Monday and Thursday.

I have always bug my friend to join me for dinner at this place as always, time arrangement did not match till finally during Chinese New Year. Often hear them buzz about this great Curry Fish Head in this Restaurant 1998 (kopitiam) that they serve one of the best in their list.

I stay nearby neither did I know that they are well known for that but finally get a chance to try out.

1998 (1)

Restaurant 1998 means did they start up in year 1998? yap, this kopitiam was establish since 1998 and been running well with quite a few well known hawker under this roof.

1998 (2)

One of them is definitely this Curry Fish Head that cook by this auntie. She cooks it individually to ensure the fish taste is enrich in a pot. Curry is being cook aside and just to add on.

1998 (3)

1998 (4)

Besdies that, was told that this Chin Kee Chicken Rice is quite well known among them and we skip this round as they die die would want to have Stewed Duck. It is actually the same owner.

1998 (5)

1998 (6)

No doubt that their stewed duck is awesome. Duck meat is being braised so soft, own made sauce to complement on it and amazingly their chili is spicy yet sourish end. A perfect combo and recommended. this place cost RM 28.

1998 (7)

After a long wait of 30-45 minutes, finally the Claypot Curry Fish head arrive and I only can manage to stop them for mere 10 seconds before they dip all the fork and spoons.

1998 (8)

Fish head is medium size and decent enough as we order 2 pot for a table of 10.

1998 (9)

Curry is rich in flavours, not too thick yet sour enough and generous with ingredient. It is filled with long beans, ladies finger, egg plant, tomato, squid and others. Spicy enough to make you drench in sweat but not numb.

1998 (10)

This is how I eat my Curry Fish Head rice in Flood version or locals call it ‘Kuah Banjir’.

Remark: If you do come by for this auntie curry fish head, she is super slow in serving and cooking. Do have patience for her as we were the only customer at that time, already took her 30-45 minutes and friends mention that she is also famous for being slow .

A nice neighborhood kopitiam with variety of hawker food for you to hunt.

Do try the Taiwanese Sausage here too ..
