One of the latest trend I heard my Penang friend talking about in our Watsapp chatroom is Hui Lau Shan which is one of a famous Hong Kong Desert had finally landed in Penang, being located inside Gurney Plaza which is one of the prime spot in Penang to start off with.  Whenvever I travel to in Hong Kong last time, I will make myself not to miss out this great desert. First stop after landed is Hui Lau Shan and finally make its mark into the island.

Hui Lau Shan (1)

Before Penang, it hit KL shore where this franchise open its very first outlet in 1-Utama and we instantly went to try out. (click here). In Penang its much different compare to the KL one’s as the outlet is bigger, more spacious and there is a line we have to queue which is longer than KL.

Hui Lau Shan (2)

Hui Lau Shan in Penang just open its door for less than a month and it had been well received by the locals.

Hui Lau Shan (3)

These are the few that I will always order or the recommended. . . Fresh Mango Mochi @ RM 4.90 for 3 pieces

Hui Lau Shan (4)

Mango with Pamelo

Hui Lau Shan (5)

Mango Icey Sweetie Ball @ RM 11.90

Apparently, I find that Penang version is must tasty than the ones in KL, in terms of mango and texture of it. Wonder is it the same owner? For more other flavours click here

If you have not tried this superb Mango desert, do drop by . .Recommended!

Being being a food hunter is my passion and looking at the F&B industries in Penang had certainly grown to another new level, with more concept restaurant are pumping up. One of the latest restaurant that had hit the shores of Penang that started operating about 2 months back is this newly Authentic Italian Restaurant at Via Pre that I can say operate and own by expatriate Italians.

via pre (1)

The shops are easily to be located as its opposite QE2 or next to British Council building. Painted in white like heritage building and at night, its well light up. Just beware that they do not have a big signage on the building and you have to drive slowly to locate the place as its at a small corner turning.

via pre (2)

Via Pre had attracted many people to visit this place and I think this would be the first Italian restaurant that offer Authentic Italian Cuisine. For those who have not tried the actual Italian food, this definitely would be one of the place to visit!

Love the interior design . . as the whole design is pretty much reflect on the typical Italian design and as Italian restaurant I am amaze of their wine range that they are offering and I am very keen to try out Italian wine.

Love their cake counter that it had been a while since I have last enter this kind of restaurant, the last one was during my study period in Melbourne and definitely enjoy it here now.

One of my friend told me that, these restaurant imported most of the ingredients as what they are trying to cook are unable to source locally.

One advice, as Penang people do not like to do reservation, it is highly advise to do your reservation as its always full during dinner and it is gaining its popularity.

Price are very reasonable that its not too expensive.

via pre (16)

I look at the beer range and find that the waiter recommend me to try on  Birra Menabrea an Italian beer, and my my, its one of a true great beer that I enjoy and beats down many beer out there. Very easy to drink, smooth and bubbly need to drink it while its chill, and after taste its sweet and hint of barley oak can be tasted. – Recommended! @RM25

via pre (17)

Then we were serve with a portion of bread which is usual that in Italian dining they will serve you a basket of home made bread with plain and oak of course their traditional eating is dipping the bread along with olive oil and vinegar. Its not like those serve with butter. Find it weird? hehe, learn to enjoy oh~

After looking at the food menu, I do not know what to order as its pretty much in bombastic Italian words and ask the owner to introduce. Then he introduce me special of the day which is not in the menu that they often change it to get the best ingredient and create 2-3 best dishes out for you to enjoy.

As we were pretty full from snacks just now, so decided to leave our order to the hands of the owner by ordering 3 dishes to share.

via pre (18)

For a soup we start off with Zuppa Toscana which is soup of the day with mixture of various types of beans. The taste is light, lean towards a bit sourish from tomato I believe and finely chop beans that bring the taste up. Some of you might not like the taste and texture of it as I find it pretty good. Learn to eat it when I was oversea. @ RM 16

via pre (19)

Since he know we love to try out food, then he recommend us to try out Special Starter that consist of Quiche, Pie and smoked beef slice with special sauce. @ RM 78

Spinach Quiche is superbly good, soft with hint of egg taste and spinach been blended and the crust is warm and crispy. Dip along with the sauce makes it event perfect with a slight sweetness at the end.

Pie is fluffy and cutting it, the tuna base mixture flow out and just enjoy every bite of it.

via pre (20)

Star of the 3 is the smoked beef that is sweet in taste and fresh, yet they pair it with salmon sauce as what we believe it as we were confuse that looking at it is smoked beef and tasting it had a after taste of salmon. A perfect combination!

via pre (21)

To eat back something authentic that I have pretty miss is Tortellini Special for the night, as usually these cant be eaten much as it is pretty filling and the ingredient they stuff in are with some mushrooms and meat. Pretty simple and flavourful.

As a food lover, I surely enjoy my meal tonight and looking forward to go back to try out their other range like spaghetti, pizza and specialty. I believe many of you would not enjoy the taste of it as this is pretty much towards Authentic Italian taste which the taste is not localize. Therefore, for those of you love are looking for authentic Italian Cuisine, Via – Pre certainly is the place I am highly recommending in Penang.

Service is very attentive even though its super busy for the night, staff are very friendly even though they are foreigners, and if you do encounter bad service experience, just give them a break as they just operating just for 2 months. Alot of things to fine tune and I believe they never expect it to be fully house most of the night.

Being a Penang person, I have never really know that Penang actually do offer a lot of great food as I have written and known more of KL food rather than Penang not until recently CK introduce us this classic and wonderful place which is hidden in this very Tan Jetty.

I have always thought that this kind of place would be the residence area and also famous for wedding photography but just greatly discover that hidden a home cook Thai authentic flavour.

Thai Good

Thai Good (2)

You need to walk through this very small wooden bridge that used by the residence on bicycle, motorbike or on foot to reach their home.

Thai Good (3)

You just have to keep walking till the very last house of this stretch of the house.

Thai Good (4)

Its low tide when we reach there, and can you just imagine the heat and no sea wind during that time, can just melt.

Thai Good (6)

Till you reach this fence wooden house and my brother is introducing you the very authentic home cook thai food is discovered.

Not only about the food, is about the environment, as you are seated above the wooden house that build on the sea yet you get to enjoy your meal by overlooking the sea and smell the salty sea water and if its windy, would be even lagi perfect.

Thai Good (7)

This is all the houses in this area are build up.

After meal, you can just down on the bridge to smoke and enjoy the scenery. A great place for photoshoot too~

Thai Good (12)

Thai Good (13)

Very next to the restaurant there is a Mini Temple yet hidden this very ‘Loh Bak’ stall that is quite famous with its local residence and the boss said that, they do cater for events too but only supplying loh bak. The loh bak is also one of the best as it was introduce by my friend few years ago during tea time.

The loh bak is filled with mince meat and spices added in to bring up the aroma of the meat yet it was fried in high temperature to get the crispiness of the skin and preserve the soft meat in it, with their very own chili sauce is just irresistible. Besides that, I love their ‘Cucuk Udang’ too, as it was fried crispy on the edge with flour and prawn is soft inside after fried on it. One word, good~ It was finish within seconds. RM1 for loh bak and RM 0.70 for ‘cucuk udang’ (if not mistaken)

Thai Good (14)

After chatting and laughing, we kick start our meal with ‘Fish Cake’ RM1.20 per piece. Looks simple but very solid on ingredient and dip with the thai chili sauce is just perfect~

Thai Good (15)

To open up our appetite, ‘Kerabu Mango’ is one of the choice must not miss for thai food. With the fine cut of cucumber, mango, carrot and top with bbq cuttlefish and added on with the dressing is will just make your taste bud sensitive with the well balance of sweet, sour, sweet and spicy.

Thai Good (16)

‘Thai Holy Basil Rice’ is next on the hit list. Something which is out of my expectation that something simple that had been cook so flavorful, basil leave did not overpower the chicken yet the chili padi added on make the spiciness level there but the catch is, do not underestimate it, as the first few bite it taste very good and upcoming bite the spiciness just shoot up and make us take a lot of water from the fridge. RM 4

Thai Good (17)

‘Deep fried fish’ fried with curry and curry leaves till dry and the curry taste stick on the crispy fish yet when eat it, its very flavorful. . Just cant stop eating.

Thai Good (18)

‘Belacan Fried Rice’ that top with sour mango slices, fried omelet, chili padi and balacan fragrance of the rice is detected. Another way to eat it, you can mix everything and eat it, will just make your sweat come out instantly. RM4

Thai Good (19)

‘Spicy Petai Chicken’ as I am not a big fan of petai but it was fried till the level I enjoy eating it. Dry curry sambal stir fried with big fresh prawns is just so good to eat it with a bowl of white rice.

Thai Good (20)

‘Tom Yam Fried Rice’ nothing special about it, as I have had better ones before. RM4

Thai Good (21)

I just love the taste of ‘Clear Seafood Tom Yam Soup’ as this is how the authentic flavor need to be, sourish and spicy with combination of the seafood ingredient just makes us want to have more than a bowl. From RM6

Thai Good (22)

Thai Good (23)

‘Pad Thai’ is abit sweet and moist as I prefer mine to be spicy and dry.

Thai Good (24)

‘Fried Kang Kung’ is not bad, and to go along with beer is just the right choice.

If you are looking for cheap and authentic Thai food, surely this is the place that I am highly recommending if you can withstand the heat and the spiciness.
