It has been a while since I had good authentic Malay food in KL. It was until recently, Bijan a no stranger name to many diners in the city at Changkat Bukit Bintang did a special promotion. Of course, to support local F&B business decided to give it a try again. It turns out to be as good as it is before.

bijan restaurant and bar

I pick some dishes that I wanted tp start off with. Cucur Bijan @ RM 15 Crisp-fried vegetable fritters of tofu, sweet potato & tempeh matchsticks with bean sprouts & spring onions. Served with Bijan’s homemade peanut & chili sauce. Done into a ball version that gives you crispy inside out. Do ask for additional chili if you are ordering this. Their chili is da bomb! hint of sweetness, sour, very mild spicy is a perfect combination with this starter.

Next, their Rendang Tok @ RM 58 : Traditional slow-cooked caramelised beef in aromatic spices & coconut milk is aas good as it looks. As soon as the cover of the Tupperware opened, the fragrant of the rendang instantly bomb my dining area. The color of the curry is amazing and the meat, is just soft and moist. Not to mention this is huge portion too! Love the mild curry flavour with hint of spices. Love it.

Local inspired food with a twist. Where can you actually find that in modern dining. It was a recent discovery for me that Bijan at Changkat Bukit Bintang is actually a well known Malay restaurant visited by many. With the success of this, they have expended it next door with SPG by Bijan. A twist of Malay Tapas and Light Bites and specialize cocktails with local infusion.

bar in changkat bukit bintang

If you are looking for Malay Cuisine then head to their classic well known Bijan.

Certainly inlove with their ambiance. It reminds me of like when I am in Bali. Casual sitting area with fan and neon purple as background and classic mosaic bar is indeed a perfect place for gathering.

spg by bijan (5)

Their cocktail series is indeed a bomb. Not your usual classic that you get in cocktail bar but it is indeed with local flavours infusion.  Believe that one of a unique cocktail in Changkat Bukit Bintang?

Hit The Road Jack @ RM 35 : vodka, frangelico, jackfruit, lemon

Kampung Girl @ RM 35 : gin, cucumber, ginger, blue pea flower

One of the local inspired cocktail is :Petai Cocktail. YUP! PETAI! Stinkini @ RM 35 pickled petai, gin, vermouth. I was like whatttt.???!!! Decided to give it a try and it blew me away. I am not a fan of petai but this cocktail is another level. A well balance of mix with hint of fermented petai that brings the aroma right at the end. PERFECT PERFECT! – Recommneded!

Blur Like Sotomg @ RM 42 : Spicy squid ink sambal tumis, anchovies, petai, mozzarella & coriander. One of my favourite for the night as a well nice mixture of flavor. not the usual Italian classic. A clever combination that brings all the flavour subtle.

spg by bijan (13)

Or Chien San @ RM 22 : It’s SPG’s or chien meets okonomiyaki. Fried oyster omelette, miso chili sauce, aioli, bonito flake & sesame. Topped with fresh oyster and omelet is done right. Bonito flakes adds a layer of smokey flavour into it.

spg by bijan (14)

One of the iconic entry for the menu is : Ah Ran Sini @ RM 25 Nasi Lemak flavours stuffed into rice balls & deep fried for deliciousness, served with anchovy mayo

spg by bijan (15)

Lamb Dumplings @ RM 16 : Lamb & Chinese parsley dumplings served with black vinegar, shrimp chili oil. First time having dumpling made with lamb. Lamb is soft and chili shirmp is a great pairing.

spg by bijan (16)

Duck Curry Bun @ RM 29 : Baked Keralan duck curry in a bun.  Extra bread for dipping +5. Second favourite of the night is this unique dish for me. Duck curry bun that had done to perfection. Fluffy bun dip into the bread is just perfect. With its hint of tumeric and duck meat cook to its softness.

spg by bijan (17)

spg by bijan (18)

Spring Chicken Diavola @ RM 32 : Spicy roast spring chicken diavola-style with baby potato confit & sautéed vegetables.  A perfect plate to share as it fits well with beer as it is punch with spices.

In Changkat Bukit Bintang surely is a well known street to many of you. Street party, Bar HOpping & good food is where all those headline would fall into this one street. By strolling up and down this street you will find yourself being harrest by all these aggressive bar people to get you into their outlet. Of course there are some other outlets that approach you in a more friendly polite manner. IT really depends.

The Steakhouse (1)

One of the most recent visit is The Steakhouse by Werner Kuhn’s establishment and I am sure many of you have heard this well known pork place in the area – El Cerdo. Its the same owner as you just need to walk across the street. This place would be my second visit and make no surprise to me that on weekdays the restaurant is on 80% capacity also known as one of the best place to hunt for steak in Changkat Bukit Bintang.

The Steakhouse (2)

The Steakhouse (3)

If you are looking for a place with 1 stone kill 2 bird then The Steakhouse is one of the restaurant to consider as it is also part of The Whiskey Bar that seriously offer lots of whiskey that my jaw would drop off. If you look/ read thru their list you will be amazed on what kind range they are providing.

The Steakhouse (4)

Its a connected place whereby one outlet offer classy bar seating area and next door is more for dining.

The Steakhouse (5)

This is what I mean that they have a few cabinate that display most of their available Whisky and they have a lot of classic and 25 years old or even more than that available in here.

The Steakhouse (6)

AT their bar counter, there are mountains of opened whisky that you can order by shots.

The Steakhouse (7)

Not only that, if you love cigars then they do have it here and you will enjoy it by sipping on your whisky.

The Steakhouse (8)

The Steakhouse (9)

Heading back to The Steakhouse as the menu is pretty straight forward. As what You see now is the only menu that they are offering. 3 pages as the last page is desserts.

The Steakhouse (10)

Being at such a bar before heading to Whisky, I started off with Cocktail ..

1) Margarita @ RM28 pretty decent as I find that the alcohol is very much strong and hint of lime is slightly visible.

2) Whisky Sour is one of my favorite drink. Easy to drink and lemon skin slices being added in to enhance on the taste. It pairs well with most of my starters. I had 3 glass. 😀 @ RM28

3) Classic Mojito @ RM28 is a well balance alcohol with mint leaves is sufficient enough to pull up the taste of it. .

The Steakhouse (11)

Next I ask the floor manager what is good to have next then he introduce drinks from Spain.

1) Rose Raspberry Sangria @ RM28

2) White Wine Pear Sangria @ RM28

Both are equally good and consider one of the best I have tried so far or maybe it suits my taste bud. A well balance of alcohol with fruits and among that 2 I prefer the White wine Pear Sangria more as its a bit alcoholic yet I can still taste the sweetness of the fruits being added in. Not only that, its chill enough and pretty refreshing. It goes well with my salad, Oyster and very very well with my escargot.

The Steakhouse (12)

Upon ordering our starters, we do not know what to get and the manager highly recommend us to get their Oyster as its fresh and flown in a day ago. We order without any hesitation and no regret after all. I am not a big fan of oyster but I ended up having 5 pieces myself. ITs so sweet and tasty just with squeezing a bit of lemon and 2 drops of tosbasco.  1 Fresh Live Oyster on ice with Shallot-Wine Vinaigrette RM9/piece. If you pair this with the right choice of white wine, it will be a bomb!

The Steakhouse (13)

Came next is Portobello mushroom with spinach & seafood @ RM26 per piece which I find it reasonable as coated with aromatic baked cheese serve along with big size mushroom and prawns.

The Steakhouse (14)

Something tone down abit your taste bud would be Caesar salad as they served their version here slightly different. Instead of using bacon, they are using smoked duck to enhance the taste of it also its slight chewy. One of the reason they using this also wanted to hold onto their Pork FREE status.. RM26

The Steakhouse (15)

Wow wow.. Looking at this picture makes me droll again as this is one of the places that serve really good escargots. It was baked perfectly with garlic herb butter and cheese. It was so aromatic upon it was serve and its perfect in taste as it smells that the snail is a bit chewy and did not over cook it and we drink the whole thing especially on the garlic herbs sauce that left behind. A MUST ORDER! RM 12 per peice

The Steakhouse (16)

Before we head into our red med, Duck Foie Gras is the last to serve. Nicely done = and the foie gras are still moist paired in chef’s special sauce. RM42

The Steakhouse (17)

The soup are prepared ahead and then baked in oven with melted cheese on top of the croutons.  RM22

The Steakhouse (18)

Mushroom soup with olive oil @ RM 20

The Steakhouse (21)

Beef Stroganoff @ RM48

This is one of the dish would falls into my very highly RECOMMENDED dish. I love this dish as I have tried a very good one over sea and locally its still hard for me to find one and I must say, finally I have found something that I like. YOu must not miss this dish when you are here as the potato rosti being pan fried till crips on both side and soft in the inside also as the side serve with beef stripes are tender and. Mushroom sauce taste pretty good too.

The Steakhouse (19)

BBQ Short Ribs @ RM78

The Steakhouse (20)

On my last visit, I did order this and this round order this again as I find it very good. Season well, then went into grill till the outer layer end up with grill mark yet inside is cook just nice. The meat is so soft that just by using fork, it easily tear off.

a

The Steakhouse (22)

Grilled Black Cod Fish @ RM58

Thick black cod fish fillet served with parsley, potato, mushroom and creamy wasabi pesto sauce

The Steakhouse (23)

First read to appear is Charcoal Grilled Australian Grain Fed Beef Medallion @ RM88

A medallion shaped cut beef and then charcoal grilled then place on hot plates upon serving to the customer

The Steakhouse (24)

Black Angus Tenderloin @ RM98

The Steakhouse (25)

Cook to the condition as I like medium rare and the steak is still juicy with the mark left behind too as the hot plate is still grilling on the beef while you are eating. Juicy and tender.

The Steakhouse (26)

I am very full till now then flipping thru what whisky set I should try, Full Japanese series or full 18 years old series. Ended up trying both.

The Steakhouse (34)

Serving the whisky takes a bit long as you all might know that its just pouring on a shot or 2. Well, one of the reason as they have this very unique kinetic mechine help to shape ice, just by putting a square cube of blog ice in the middle then let the top cover do its magic.

The Steakhouse (36)

Tadaa… after about 3 minutes it had been shape up like that to be added into the glass and serve with the set.

The Steakhouse (27)

Japanese Tasting Set which consist 4 different years whiskey on your tasting tray. Each were explained on its characteristic and tasting method. Please do not spoil this great whisky with coke as many of you do. ITs either on neat or mix with water. On this tasting series is the Japanese Suntory distillery’s famous Yamazaki, Hibiki and Hakushu ranging from 12 to 22 years. In here still Yamazaki is the winner for me.

The Steakhouse (29)

Next tray is Perfect 18 means 5 taster of 18 years old whisky from 5 different whisky disstealeries

The Steakhouse (32)

The Steakhouse (37)

Last but not least, when you are full till like a fat pig could not walk, who say you cant eat anymore! There is always room for dessert no matter how your full condition is. Love the Mango taste and the original is not bad too.

The Steakhouse (38)

Tiramisu @ RM22.50

The Steakhouse (39)

Baked Cheese Cake is pretty decent as its soft that can still taste on the cheese not too thick either. @ RM22.50

The Steakhouse (40)

Looking at their own dessert signature series, Andreas Special on the left come with difference ice cream! It come with white chocolate ice cream, milky chocolate mousse, chocolate crumble, banana in passion fruit and pear in red wine. If you are slightly adventurous and would want a slightly well balance taste then don miss this. AS Andres special (left) have a quite well balance taste with sour, sweet, and slightly bitter end then you must hunt this down!

The Steakhouse (41)

Werner and Andreas Special @  RM22.50 each

As the dining came to an end I discover that their most expensive beef is not the best I have had and I find that The Steakhouse have its advantage as the one slightly cheaper taste better for me. Moist, juicy and just right! Since everything is juicy, our receipt also very juicy.

A place that I have heard numerous good feedback is El Cerdo and always wanted to dine here if I have the opportunity, as always do not have a strong reason to come here. A place that is famous for plate breaking that will shoo your badluck away is one of their signature ceremony and when you dine here, often you will hear glass breaking sound.

El Cerdo (1)

Well, El Cerdo is definitely a place to die for if you are a pork lover with its little quote ‘nose to tail eating’ which every part of pig can be eaten. A place that specialize in pork that is not stranger than El Cerdo also means ‘The Pig’ in Spannish and here you go by learning a new word. This restaurant serve Cochinillo Spanish cuisine that smack right in the heart of busy night spot at Changkat Bukit Bintang. One of the reason that this restaurant is quite famous because  they have a Award-Winning Master chef that specializes in home-cooked pork flavours from all over the world like Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico.

El Cerdo (2)

Upon entering the restaurant, you will be greeted by a pig statue on the floor besides the friendly waiter that greet and ushering us to our table.

El Cerdo (3)

El Cerdo (4)

In the restaurant, you can find many cute piggy icons, pictures, statues around it and this piggy means HUat arrrhhh~

El Cerdo (5)

El Cerdo (6)

El Cerdo (7)

One of the reason they have so constant repeat customer is their quality and service also, that also won them a few awards. Now you know why~

El Cerdo (8)

Even the menu also have a cute pig chef picture that ready to blast you with its food range.

El Cerdo (9)

In the menu is pretty simple and straight forward with all the porky range that they have and everything looks tempting.

El Cerdo (10)

El Cerdo (11)

Later we were served with a few Werner’s Special, as we leave our fate to the waiter to recommend us what drink is nice.

El Cerdo (12)

El Cerdo (13)

El Cerdo (14)

A place that would be perfect for any special celebration as on that night itself, which is on weekdays already have a few birthday celebration in da restaurant and its quite pack too for a normal weekday business.

El Cerdo (15)

We were then seated in a private room for 4 of us. 😀

El Cerdo (16)

Jamon Serrano – Assortment of Jamon Serrano and Jamon Iberico with a Variety of Chorizo Sausages and Condiments @ RM 48

Serve with Imported High Quality Spanish Cured @ Air Dried Ham serve with Rock Melon and Salad

El Cerdo (17)

This would be my first time dining a full range of ham, and never had I seen so much ham in one meal. This is one of their signature that feature many types of ham that being serve fresh, air tight bag and flown all the way from a few countries.

El Cerdo (18)

To eat it, I always try a combo that one of a restaurant manager that taught me before is pair everything up on the plate that you can find as it is always a ingredient that they would go along and for me this round, I am taking a slice of ham, a vegetable and one rock melon, slide it into my mouth and it taste awesome.! Sweet yet refreshing and slight salty from the ham just pair the taste very well.

El Cerdo (19)

Oven Roasted Iberico Spare Ribs

Serve with Pineapple Salsa

El Cerdo (20)

When this was serve, Jason and Me Was like woahh!! and when it had landed on the table we cant stop drooling as the smell of the fresh roasted pork ribs trail on the air. Quickly we took the pictures and rape this ribs after that.

El Cerdo (21)

Indeed, was well marinated along with perfect roast of temperature that make all the side crispy and every bite filled with crack sound. The meat is just so tender and we have to pull out the meat with our teeth, by enjoying every bite of it.

El Cerdo (29)

We had not enough and we order another portion for big meat eater like us.

El Cerdo (22)

Cochinillo Alestili Segoviano

Roasted Suckling Pig (Oink Oink)

HALF PIGLET   @ RM188

WHOLE PIHLET   @ RM358

El Cerdo (23)

This is one of the signature that all of you must not miss, the suckling pig.

El Cerdo (24)

When the manager came over with the plate and told me that he can cut the suckling pig with the plate and I am so suprise till I ask him ‘ARe you SErious?’ he answered yes. One of the reason that it had been so easy that the pig had been marinated for a few hours before it was put to roast and that is how it ended up so crips and fresh.

Besides that, there is this Spanish tradition before you eat on this suckling pig which is like a little ceremonial to chop. 😀

You have to knock hard on the wooden board for 3 times before cutting it with the plate. Follow by cutting its head, body and tail as it means after chopping 3 times, it will transfer bad luck into the plate then you have to break the plate in the prepared wooden pail to cast away the bad luck and welcome Good Luck. Huat AHH!!!!

Hmm, didnt know that to eat a pig have this cute little ceremony to chase away bad luck. Its fun and you have to really try it yourself. One of the signature thing that many couples and friends do in this restaurant.

El Cerdo (26)

Serve along with special gravy.

El Cerdo (27)

And here you go, the well perfect cut of the roast skin, meat and everything. Smells just so good. One of the set back is, it has a bit pig smell that some of you might not like it. To us we find it good!

El Cerdo (28)

The skin is super crispy, aromatic that makes me keep eating and eating, definitely it had different taste compare to our Chinese traditional suckling pig. Its different league I would say. Meat is soft and juicy and I prefer to eat it like this than along with the gravy. Its just perfect portion for 3 huge guys like us!

El Cerdo (30)

Mountain Paella

Paelle Style Rice with Pork Bacon, Chicken and Fresh Mushroom @ RM 88

El Cerdo (31)

El Cerdo (32)

Something special to end off our great dinner Werner’s Special – Fresh Strawberry in Mango Sauce with Chocolate Mousse and Wild Raspberry Sherbet . At first it looks weird to all of us that nobody wanted to touch it, and it doesnt bother me and Jason till our expression came up good then Eric only took it. Sourish taste just as my liking that is just perfect to end this meal with this great desert. RM22.50

Overall, I enjoy myself in this dining and if you are saying would I come back again, I will say, DEFINATELY YES! as one of a pork lover this is surely a place that you would not want to miss. Recommended Restaurant. Bare that the food here doesnt comes cheap that you might have to dig a bit into your wallet as easily can comes to RM80-RM120 per pax depending on what is your order. 🙂 Its well worth spend.
