Any one of you fancy China food? I do, as I have dine before many good authentic China food before and definitely not in Malaysia. One of my best friend introduce me her all time favourite sze chuan food that located in Jalan Alor (click here). Then recently, I am being introduce to another type of China food which hail all the way from North China. Dong Bei is actually a province in North China and the owners have migrated to Malaysia, hence that is how the Dong Bei Restaurant is name after. The family came to Malaysia as early as 1992 and also known as one of the pioneer of authentic China food back in those early days. As now the restaurant is located behind Times Square, can you see that area is like a mini China eatery street.

Dong Bei (1)

In China, there are many province and taste definitely different for any other town that they have, it is the same as Malaysia too, as the East coast and WEst cost taste bud are very much different. So what is the difference for Dong Bei Food. The food have more sourish end and not that spicy. ( as the owner have localize it)

Dong Bei (2)

Its a simple restaurant and indoor seating is a unique dining experience as they have design in a way to give a little ambiance of what Dong Bei dining feels like.

Dong Bei (3)

Dong Bei (4)

this is the first time I came across utensils are properly wrap to kept the cleanliness of it.

Dong Bei (5)

Beancurd Dong Bei Style (风味干豆腐丝)RM18. Import all the way from China as its hard to find this kind of texture that originate the authenticity of it. Its a cold platter with chewy texture and hint of garlic and spicy chili oil taste. Pretty good to start off with.

Dong Bei (13)

Crisp Potato (香辣土豆片) @ RM18 for a start would be another good option.

Dong Bei (7)

This is another unique dish which is Dong bei Da La Pi sheet with Cucumber Salad (东北大拉皮)RM14. AT first glance I thought it was pig skin that finely cut then its not. Sprinkle with some garlic and eat it sheet by sheet, that taste a bit like jelly fish and pig skin texture cross over. 😀

Dong Bei (6)

Sauerkraut, stir-fried with glass noodles (酸菜粉) @ RM18

Dong Bei (8)

Stewed Eggplant, Bean, Potato and Meat Dong Bei style (东北大乱炖) @ RM25. This is rather simple as I would rate this North China Curry, thick n creamier gravy and its a little sweet in taste at the end. Well fried and I quite like it. Goes well with my rice.

Dong Bei (9)

Hot & Spicy Seafood (麻辣香锅)RM28

Amount so many dishes, this would turn out one of the most spicies compare to the rest, the spiciness is not to the extend to make our mouth numb, as I find its well balance, even though cook with lots of dry chili, do not let the look to scare you off. I love how they cook along with lotus root make it crisp on the bite and prawns is fresh.

Dong Bei (10)

Boiled Fish with Sour Cabbage and Spicy Soup (酸菜鱼) RM32

Dong Bei (14)

This turns out to be one of the favourite among my table, as strong sourish taste with veggie and fresh fish. Those who like mild spicy, this would be a good option.

Dong Bei (11)

“Gardens”Prawn, Lotus Root, Potato and Vegetables (田园小炒) RM28

Dong Bei (12)

I rate this is super star for the night as Sweet & Sour Pork ( 锅包肉 ) was fried to perfection and its so cripsy outside and the pork inside its not overcook. Taste with a bit of sour vinegar taste with soy sauce that turn it a good [email protected] RM18 – recommended

Dong Bei (15)

Lastly, we did not order the Dumplings (10 pcs) (饺子) but looking at so many tables order dish its like a must have thing and ended up we order 2 portion. One is steam @ RM10 and another one is [email protected] RM8

Great starter to go along and if mix with a bit of chili oil with ginger and vinegar, I just like mine to be in that way. 😉

Celebrate the Year of the Snake and usher in the Lunar New Year with us as Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur’s Celestial Court goes all out to tempt your eyes, satisfy your senses and whet your appetite with a variety of sumptuous delights.

The Lunar New Year is the most important date in the Chinese calendar and is an elaborate celebration in many parts of Asia. Additionally, there are 12 Chinese Zodiac signs and for the year 2013, it is the Year of the Snake. The Snake carries the meaning of malevolence, cattiness and mystery. In certain places or culture, people believe that if they found a snake in their court, the family will be delighted. Also, people like to paste the paper-cut ‘Fu’ (wealth) character in an upside down position on their doors or windows, combined with a snake twisting around a rabbit as a popular pattern to indicate wealth.

Coming to year end, what we usually do is hunt for nice spot to eat and drink with friends and family. Recently came across this outlet located at Bangsar Shopping Center, that had instantly top in my list of recommendation with a great balance of scrumptious food, excellent service, great entertainment and of course, an environment to die for. WIP at bangsar is one of a many favourite hangout spot

The name itself already very catchy that evolve from “Work In Progress” and now mature to WIP is short for “Whipped Into Place”

wip (1)

wip (2)

Luscious cuisine featuring a hearty selection of Western, Asian and Northern Indian cuisine will more than satisfy the palate.

wip (3)

Its a huge restaurant that have a few sections in it with bar counter are uniquely design. If you look and feel, its more like a indoor tropic garden interior like.

wip (4)

wip (5)

For huge family they have a long table, that is sited slightly higher compare to other dining area and its a bit close up that give you privacy on it.

wip (6)

Cigar anyone?

wip (7)

wip (8)

wip (9)

wip (10)

Offer great selection of Mocktail, Cocktail and wine too.

wip (11)

A great dinner of course my accompanied by favorite alcohol, with Strongbow, Guinness and Paulaner in presence.

wip (12)

Find that North Indian cuisine are slightly different compare to the south, as its more usage of spice rather than spicy. Mutton Varuvalis one of the dish that first came out from appetizer menu. Chunky cubes of mutton being well marinated with spices, aromatic with bursting flavours. Not spicy at all.

wip (13)

Grilled Portobello Mushrooms – something simple is with this juicy mushroom and eat along with garden salad is just nice.

wip (14)

Never knew that Mushroom and Spinach Pizza @ RM 31 falls into appetizer catagory as its  not small ordinary pizza, its quite huge to feed for 2 person. Made fresh with paper thin crust that is crispy on the edge, with cheeze, mushroom and spinach.

wip (15)

I love The Chicken Chimichangas @ RM 22 were actually flour tortilla stuffed with chicken and cheese, deep fried and served with spicy tomato salsa. Well prepared, and love the condense ingredient that added in. To me, its like Curry Puff in Spanish style – Recommended~

wip (16)

Kakiage looks plain, but with just only first bite, you will never stop. Something simple and the magic is the sauce that will keep you going.

wip (19)

Every restaurant sure will have their special item. Well in WIP Espetadas are their signature item. Typical Portugese dish made of chunks of meat on skewers, seasoned and grilled. As right in the restaurant I was very curious as I saw many people order this dish with skewers all hanging on the metal pole. Presentation sure its eye catchy as already caught my attention from the beginning.

wip (18)

Special sauces are created to match the right food.

wip (20)

Lamb loin marinated with garlic herbs and balsamic vinegar, Sirloin chunks marinated with garlic and traditional herbs @ RM 92 , Chicken breast and chicken thigh chunks marinated with jerk spices, and Prawn, squid and fish marinated with olive oil, garlic and herbs @ RM 78

wip (21)

Roasted Caribbean Chicken. A whole chicken thigh, marinated with spices, oven roasted and served with potatoes, vegetables and roasted garlic sauce.

wip (22)

Branzino – Barramundi fillet pan fried and served with grilled vegetables, potato wedges and bisque sauce. Fish meat is soft, with a sign of freshness, and the sauce just make it more delicious.

wip (23)

WIP’s version of Sang Har Mein  is  using deep-fried wantan noodles and fresh “blue-legged” prawns cooked and shower in a thick eggy grav.

wip (24)

Another one of my favourite North Indian cuisine here is Chicken Makanwala marinated chicken breast cooked in hot and spicy gravy and served with chana masala (chickpea in spicy gravy), aloo methi (potatoes cooked with fenugreek leaves), salad, papadum (Indian crackers) and naan or briyani rice. I prefer this to be with Nan as its well prepared, as its soft and pair very well with the gravy. – Recommended~

wip (25)

The Tropical Fruit Pavlova is a meringue-based dessert topped with dragon fruit, orange, mango and passion fruit with coconut cream filling.

wip (26)

First bite on the crust of the pavlova, it instantly reminded me of kuih bangkit (Coconut Cookies) that I eat during Chinese New Year. Crust easily melts in my mouth.

wip (27)

Another creative invention by their great pastry chef is this Trio Creme Brulee (Vietnamese coffee, passionfruit and ginger).

No doubt with great ambiance, services and great food quality that they have that won them this award. Surely its one of the restaurant that I have been recommending my friend even before I am witting this.

Now its my turn into action . . . by gently press the dough till flaten by your palm and roll it again and redo the process a few times till its flaten thoroughly. .

Oversea restaurant (17)

Then put it at your palm and take the yolk twist it in circular motion to slowly wrap the whole yolk

Oversea restaurant (18)

then you can shape the dough in any design you like as the traditional design look slightly like pear shape to me.

It is fun experience and pretty interesting on how to make it as the texture of the dough is totally different and by the colour of it, you will know that after bake it will turn out to be good no matter how u wrap or shape the dough.

Oversea restaurant (19)

Tadaaa, here is our Shanghainese Mooncake Creation.  After baked, the best look is to have a slight crust on it.

To mark their 30th Anniversary the Head chef which is the founder of Oversea restaurant, Cheng Kor which everyone call him Brother Cheong decided to bring back their first classic packaging back in those days, and all of us find it very classic and cute~ Only then I get to know that Shanghai Mooncake is originate by this chef as he is the creator of it. In Shanghai you cant find this mooncake as they do not have this version and proud that its a local production ages ago.

tEK seng (5)

Every restaurant has its signature item and in Tek Sen, this Fried Roast Pork is one of their best seller that many customers will have to order if they dine here. Fried till a bit crips on the head, a bit spicy with chili padi, caramelize coated on the meat and usually we had 2 plates of this. RM 28highly recommended~

tEK seng (6)

Followed by Inchi Kai Bin @ RM 14

tEK seng (7)

This big juicy prawns is Asam Prawns.  The flavor of tamarind is there, well coated along the prawns that every bite of the prawn is juicy yet the flavor is well balance.  RM 49

tEK seng (8)

Not many people like this dish, Bitter gourd fried along with salty duck egg and mince meat, as the bitterness of it had prevent many people on liking it including me, I used to dislike this dish yet I have been tought on how to enjoy it. Since then, I do order it when I have the change. A dish that fried simple that bitterness of the vegetable is not too strong and mix well with the taste of salty duck [email protected] RM 12

tEK seng (9)

Another one of their signature range is their curry. So we ordered on their Curry Fish (sting Ray) @ RM 23, As I like how my Asam fish is sourness is stronger and after taste of it is a bit spicy at the end. Curry gravy is not too thick and to mix with your rice to eat along is just perfect~ – Recommended

tEK seng (10)

One of my friend always dine here and he never miss this dish which is 3 steam egg. Different types of egg which is (century, duck and normal egg) to steam on it. Sometimes to dine in a restaurant to give us good memory, food taste definitely will attract us to be back there as there is one new restaurant with its catchy name Chyniss Restaurant which a new restaurant located in SS2 mall that will serve best Chinese cuisine that combines into under one roof..

chyniss (6)

Tawau Special Fish Maw Soup with chinese wine. This huge bowl are able to serve 4-8 pax and if you love your soup to be rich in ingredient, this is one soup I am recommending. The ingredient in it is very generous that every spoonfull is chewable with it. Some people might not like it because of the texture or too rich in ingredient as we find it is just nice for all of us.

chyniss (7)

3 Cup chicken known as Sam Pui Kai

chyniss (8)

Which is surprisingly good, cuz it is similar to the taste that I had it when I was in Taiwan with strong taste and well coated sauce on the chicken and cook till soft. If you eat just like that, the taste might a bit too strong, and as along with rice, its just perfect. Basil leaves might look alot as I find it, the taste is not too strong.

chyniss (9)

Pork meat that had been soaked for a few days in herbs, comes this good dish ‘Salted Pork knuckle’. Look solid from its look, once you hear the cracking sound of the skin in betwee, that is where your saliva start dripping with its a bit salted herbs aroma filled the air. Pork lovers, this might be one of the dish for you to hunt for.

chyniss (10)

One of the most unique vegetable that for the first time I taste on it is called ‘Moonflower’ that is very nutritious that cook in clear fried style. Texture of it is very soft and abit soggy, as it was well fried in clear style.

chyniss (11)

Fried Garupa Fish with Thai style in plum sauce.

chyniss (12)

With fish meat been slice out with equal thickness then deep fried till its outer layer is crispy then showers along with the sauces. Normally, I do not really take fish, as the fish meat is very fresh and the best is the sauce that soaks onto the crispy skin and soft fish meat.

chyniss (14)

Next dish that open our eyes big big is by serving this huge ‘Crab in Kam Heong style’.It was well fried with wok hei and taste of kam hiong just soak onto the crab shell and meat. We just enjoy this dish.

There are three sizes of crabs available here at Chyniis; Indonesian Mud Crab in medium (RM50 per kg) and large (RM75 per kg) size, and Australian Mud Crab which is huge (RM120 per kg).

chyniss (13)

Next that me and Jason really like it is this, ‘Sauteed Lai Mien’ . love the texture of the noodle which is springy and well fried. Recommended~

chyniss (15)

One man behind this great this is this chef that had been one of the neigbourhood for many years. . No wonder all his dish that prepared are very aromatic and delicious.

chyniss (16)

One of the most unique desert that you must try, but it is not always available, depends on your luck if the chef do prepare it for the day.

I have no doubt that this is one of a recommended restaurant if you are hunting for nice chinese food both the aroma and taste will thrill you. The restaurant is also conveniet that jockey service is available directly infront of the restaurant for arond RM4-RM5.
