Ushering the year of the Metal Rat is just next week. Time indeed flies. Book any of a restaurant for family, friends, and business associates gathering? As for this year Lai Po Heen in Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur is offering a unique lunch from 1 January to 29 February 2020 for their Chinese New Year Menu 2020. Delight over an enticing array of yee sang and auspicious set menus inspired by the season prepared by Lai Po Heen’s new Executive Chinese Chef Michael Wong and his team.

Throughout the promotion period, the hotel presents a line-up of season-inspired dining, complemented by entertainment options that will elevate the dining experience. The “God of Wealth”, one of the most popular deities in the Chinese folk religion who denotes good fortune and wealth, will be giving out traditional red packets at Lai Po Heen, Mosaic and Lounge on the Park on 24 January during dinner and on 25 January during lunch and dinner services. Between 24 and 26 January, diners at Lai Po Heen will be entertained by a guzheng performance, also known as Chinese zither, from 7 to 10pm. On 31 January, a lion dance that symbolises prosperity, fortune and happiness will be performing at the Hotel entrance at 11.30am.

As for this year, Lai Po Heen yee sang is on the premium side, with a nice mixture of salmon, tuna, butter fish and jellyfish, presented in a fanshaped that is synonymous to Mandarin Oriental’s fan emblem; Abalone yee sang; Canadian surf clam yee sang; Yellowtail yee sang; Salmon yee sang; and Vegetarian Snow Pear yee sang.

Lai Po Heen’s selection of yee sang is available during lunch and dinner; and are priced from RM 98 to RM 476 for half portion and full portion respectively. For those looking to celebrate in the comfort of their own home, these creations are also available for takeaway. Love my Yee sang as it is fit with fresh butter fish and tuna. The sauce that the chef make is just nice to bring sweet sourish and freshness of the ingredients out.

Braised abalone with mushroom, stuffed Japanese Kanto sea cucumber and brown sauce. this is my first time seeing an sea cucumber like with torn. Interestingly, it is only available in Japanese sea water. Texture is more solid, slighty springy.

Lai Po Heen offers three exquisite set menus namely Fortune, Prosperity and Wealth that are priced at RM 288, RM 398 and RM 518 per person respectively. The Fortune and Prosperity menus require a minimum of four diners, while the Wealth menu requires a minimum of two diners, and each dish will be served individually plated.

 

Dim Sum aficionados will be pleased to learn that the dim sum masters are showcasing two set menus specially crafted for the season. The Longevity Dim Sum set will tempt any palate with steamed baby abalone and chicken siew mai, pan-fried bean curd rolls filled with shrimps; steamed fluffy buns filled with barbecue chicken; steamed bean curd skin rolls filled with minced prawns and chicken in sweet and sour sauce; deep fried yam dumplings filled with chicken, prawn and sun-dried scallop; and double boiled abalone soup with premium bamboo fungus just to name a few.

For Happiness Dim Sum set, savour the freshly made steamed prawn and water chestnut dumplings with gold leaf; mushroom buns with assorted mushroom; steamed spicy charcoal dumpling filled with seafood; deep-fried roasted duck dumplings; golden fried prawn and mango rolls with bread crumbs; double boiled chicken and vegetable soup with fish maw and sun-dried scallops and more.

Available for lunch only, both menus are priced at RM 188 and RM 238 per person respectively, with a minimum of four diners.

Crafting out their signature Yee Sang known as Unity Lou Sang. Back in those days, the dish is known as the Prosperity Toss, Yee Sang is a Cantonese-style raw fish salad. Said to have originated from Seremban in the 1940s, Loke Chin Fatt was the caterer responsible for the tweaking of the humble fisherman’s dish into a cultural, celebratory phenomenon. The dish represensts A symbol of good luck, prosperity, health and all things auspicious.
