Love pastry? Why not try out something new .. There is a shop I stumble upon 2 weeks ago at Publika that sells Hungarian bread. How I got attracted to it is that the friendly owner himself handing out the tester and it was pretty good. Then during my purchase got to know more about the little stall more. I ask him how do I describe this, he mention its a type of pastry taste like bread and a bit soft like cakes. Interesting I say.

kalac (1)

This whole bread or cakes originate from Transylvania also known as one of a traditional wedding Pastry. It name as Kurtos Kalacs in Hungary languages. Kurtos means Chimney, where as Kalacs is a type of pastry.

kalac (2)

You can see Malaysians at his shop as baker but the main lead is from the owner himself as the secret recipi comes from him, hence that is how the name secret 009 came about. All their dough are being made from scratch at the shop and bake fresh daily.

kalac (4)

They turn out in a form of rolls and easy to peel. Not only that, there are a few flavours for you to choose. Ranging from original – its a must try, rather plain and aromatic with its dough softness and special add on flavours. You can try if they have tester before you buy.

kalac (3)

Besides that, they have peanut. . .

kalac (5)

Cinamon. .

kalac (6)

Chocolate.

I bought 3 flavours home, with Cinamon, chocolate and original and find that its best to eat it fresh. As the owner told me that if you want to eat it the next day, use oven to reheat it about 3-4 minutes then its fresh to eat again. My advice is not to buy the chocolate flavour as its easy to melt.

Love the texture of this Hungarian Kalacs, that I would say its in between pretzel and bread. 😀

Worth to give it a try as they sell in 3 different sizes, for Small is RM 6, then have medium and one full roll.

Neo Tamarind has never been a stranger to me, as the place is pretty well know for its ambiance and food that many occasions I see my friend are there for dinner. Nevertheless, this round we are here for Cape Mentelle wines tasting & pairing. I am lucky to received my first direct wine pairing dinner invitations for this round.

wine (1)

The restaurant is located on the busy street of Jalan Sultan Ismail or next to a huge Merc showroom.

NEO Tamarind is best described as ‘the new zen’. Imaginative NEO Tamarind-cuisine the defies rules, borderless food designs will arouse your palate. Filled with statue, galactic bar with a chic & cosy luxe lounge for lazy weekend afternoons. A place that won many awards that bring you to another dimension.

wine (4)

as we arrive, we are being treated with first bottle of wine which turns out to be me and Cheng Yi’s preferred bottle from this wine range.

wine (5)

Before the dinner, we can enjoy the Blind wine tasting being prepare for us and I won my self a bottle of my favourite wine back –

Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012

wine (14)

Upon arrival of many guest, I am honour to be in here with the rest famous blogger, KYspeaks, KampungboyCityGirl, Evelyn, Cheng Yi , & another blogger that I love to read when comes to wine & Whisky is Ei Ling (which I forgot to take pic with her)

wine (6)

A bit on Cape Mentelle as the winery takes its name from the nearby Cape, named by the French ‘Baudin Expedition’ which charted the coast of Western Australia in 1801. They named the Cape after two notable French scientists, geographer Edmund and his cartographer brother Francois-Simon Mentelle, who lived in Paris in the early 1700’s.

In the early years David Hohnen experimented with grape varieties including shiraz, cabernet, zinfandel, sauvignon blanc and semillon. Many of these original plantings are the source of the distinctive wines that have come to characterise Cape Mentelle. The winery’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced primarily from the original Wallcliffe Vineyard.

In 1983 Cape Mentelle won the coveted Jimmy Watson Memorial Award for the best one year old dry red wine, and cemented its position as a premium wine maker with another win in 1984. Our Cabernet Sauvignon is now widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading cabernets.

Another great fact finding that I discover is Cloudy Bay, from New Zealand is actually another favourite wine that I enjoy from that vineyard. Cloudy Bay won world recognition with its Sauvignon Blanc. Cape Mentelle meanwhile developed a stylish Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend that was to become another benchmark of the Margaret River region, and a Chardonnay sourced from vineyards outside the estate.

Today Cape Mentelle, as part of Estates & Wines (owned by Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton), continues to build on its solid foundations. There are more than 150 hectares under vine and the winery crushes about 1,700 tonnes of fruit from the estate vineyards and contract-grown fruit sourced from within the region.

We have 5 flavours to test tonight.

The dining area is simply elegant that nicely decorated with white roses, little table lamp and candles.

wine (26)

Best of all, we are dining together with Ashley Wood to enlighten us with his knowledge on the wine that we will be tasting tonight. He is  born and raised in Western Australia, growing up in the Swan Valley and the Perth foothills. He is passionate about the region and in particular the Margaret River terroir. Ash firmly believes that the superb quality of the fruit grown in Margaret River is a unique reflection of this. Ashley travelled extensively overseas and during this time visits to Bordeaux and Alsace fuelled an interest in grape growing. On his return home he enrolled to study for a Bachelor of Viticulture at Charles Sturt University in New South Wales. Ash then spent 12 years working in vineyards in Margaret River before joining the team at Cape Mentelle just in time for the 2007 harvest.

wine (15)

First glass pouring on the table starts off with Chardonnay 2011, on first sip it is filled with fresh youthful palate with flavours of lime, pear and grapefruit, as further drinking it, it leads to lemony and pear flavours

Pairing with first dish, Steam Cod with coconut sauce it sounds weird to me but after a few bite and with a sip of wine, it turns out to be paired very well, with refreshing end. Interesting.

wine (16)

wine (19)

Carbernet Merlot 2010 first smells with tobacco and plum skins. . Find it is medium to full bodied palate with soft and elegant tannins ends with fresh fruit characters. Find it easy to drink for a red.

pairs with

Roasted Chicken served with Garlic Bulb, Whipped Potato, Apple Sauce with Chicken Jus

wine (21)

The roasted chicken is done pretty good, not too dry yet moist and eating along with  the grilled garlic bulb was a bomb and the aftertaste aroma of its is fragrant. On the night itself, the garlic bulb make a highlight on my table as every one is enjoying it.

wine (22)

Next pairing is Roasted Duck Breast served with Red Cabbage Puree & Mustard Sauce and Shiraz 2011

Duck is rather disappointing as its abit overdone and chewy. . Shiraz is always pretty easy for me to recognise with its mild peppery or spices taste as I am not really a fan of this range. However it has light sweet end with spicy finishing.

wine (27)

Last to pair with meat is Grilled Beef Tenderloin served with Eryngii Mushroom, Scallion Oil & Beef Jus with

Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

wine (28)

Although the meat looks red and overall I enjoy the wine more than the food, maybe is because I had good steak for past weekend.

wine (29)

Among the red, I like Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 cuz its full bodied and dry end. The taste is strong with mild oak influence. It is best paired with red meat.

wine (30)

For dessert, we were serve Green Tea Creme Brulee

wine (31)

wine (32)

My favourite wine from this vineyard for white Souvignon Blanc 2012 so easy to drink with light fruity end and can continue drinking non stop, along by recommending Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. I love my red to have dry end as I love dry wine.

[Close Down]

Over the weekend, I was attending a Photography workshop at Bankers Club, and of course there are breaks in between. Then hit down to dinner and walk pass thru Sungai Wang to head to Lot 10 Hutong, I came across this Polo Bun Shop by the name Polo Zai Bakery Cafe. I love polo bun alot and looking at the texture of the bread surely looks tempting and decided to buy 1 after dinner to test the quality.

Guess what? After buy 1 on the first night, we ended up ta pau and buy for the next 2 days of the workshop, including last night. 😀

polozai (1)

Some fact of Polo bun or 菠萝包 is the Hong Kong style of bun and very popular in Hong Kong. The word 菠萝 is also a Hong Kong word meaning ‘pineapple’ where the skin of the bun looks like a pineapple.

Now at Polozai Bakery Cafe, they have mastered and specialized in baking these Polo bun with 16 choices of creative and delicious flavors to choose from. I believe they are freshly baked daily to get the freshness and quality of it. You will be tempted by the smell of it although its not so strong as compare to Roti Boy.

polozai (2)

I have tried  a few flavours over the past few days. One of the original which is Polo Butter is always the classic. With the cripsy crumbs on the top and butter spread at the base/ bottom @ RM 2.80.

polozai (3)

Next I try their Custard Polo Bun, crust is the same as the filling is custard. Find that the filling of custard is not well spread out as I bite half of the bun still there is no sign of the custard and only realize is only 1/4 of the bun, which is one of the corner.

polozai (4)

To be adventourous, we bought alot a few flavours such as Durians. Durian turns out to be pretty good and generous with the ingredient, with the durian flesh sticking out like that, can see that they are using fresh durian to insert as the filling.

Another 2 we tapau is Cheeze and Polo Ham Sausage.

The range of their bun are from RM2.80 – RM 5 depends on which selection you are aftering. For first timer, I would definately recommend their classic signature which is the Polo Bun, follow by Custard or durian.

Overall, the crust of the top is not bad, not too sweet and bun is pretty soft. Can say that one of the best Polo Bun that I came across, in overall taste and if they are serve pippin hot or warm, it would surely be one of the top seller in Sungwai Wang.

When my best friend drop by in KL before heading back to Penang for preparation on his wedding, manage to have dinner with the rest of the group and some of them havent seen them quite a while. Then text him, where for dinner and he insisted I must dine at his hotel area whereby Prego Italian restaurant is one of his favourite restaurant. I have no doubt in his taste because when I was in Sydney, he brought me to all his favourite place and all are top notch.

prego (1)

Prego is one of the restaurant located at Ground Floor of Westin as we enter the restaurant I am surprise to see its pretty full for such restaurant on weekdays. Knowing the capacity, surely this place wont turn out in disappointed. Then only found out that they are one of a award winning restaurant. One of it is  “Best Italian Restaurant” in KL by Time Out KL for a few years

prego (2)

Classy interior with dim lights all the way, greetings from friendly staff  as you reach the entrance . ..

prego (3)

prego (4)

prego (5)

For smokers, you can opt to be seated outside and they have a coffee and cocktail bar for you ready outside to place your order.

prego (6)

I find the pricing in this fine dine area, is pretty decent. Selection of food is pretty much the same with any other types of Italian dining. (Full Menu, click here)

prego (7)

Then we were greeted by their homemade complimentary bread with tomato dip. It was gone in seconds, that the bread is warm and the dip just pair very well with the bread. We requested for another round of bread. 😀

prego (8)

One of the recommendations from my friend that he will never miss whenever he dine at this restaurant is Mushroom Risotto @ RM 52. Pack with flavours and its quite thick and creamy. It was cook to perfection, with the cheese melted and texture light sticky as it is suppose to be. We ended up order another portion. – Highly recommended!

prego (9)

Oxtail Rivioli as my another mischievous friend called it high class wantan. Light gravy sauce shower upon the rivioli and the @ RM 52

prego (11)

Braised Lamb Shank are decent as braised till the meat is soft and risotto at the bottom is too soft to my liking. @ RM 73

prego (12)

Another super star is Lasagne. Love the soft texture of layer in between that is not too thick, beef and tomato that is cook along is awesome! Highly recommended! @ RM 56

prego (13)

Saleme Pizza @ RM 49

prego (15)

This was our first round, and second round we went to Luna Bar for a drink, then they have third round that I did not follow  . ..

I often fancy for nice cakes, or in another word I am a dessert lover. Few years ago, I got expose to this brand as they operate in other states, then my sister found out that there is a home baker in Penang that sell very nice mille crepe as they started out providing by online ordering of freshly hand-made and hand-layered mille crepes.. Since it was my dad’s birthday, and decided to place an order. Since then it had become our yearly order for any of my family member birthday celebration.

There are another 2 more outlets are well known to many people in KL, one which is Food Foundry that located in Section 17 and latest addition is Nadeje from Melaka that spread its wings to KL.

humble (1)

Good news is that now they have spread their wings to F&B outlet as we no longer need to order the whole cake to enjoy the flavor of it and now we can just pop by to one of their latest outlet in Penang which is located in Straits Quay, that is in front of Papa Rich.

humble (2)

When I told my friend lets head here for dessert, they instantly agree as we do not know what to do for the next 2 hours. So camp here and kill some time.

humble (3)

There are about 8 flavours available

humble (4)

humble (6)

As my best friend say, dessert in chocolate will never ever go wrong. @ RM 9.90

humble (7)

French Vanilla (Original) @ RM 9.90

humble (8)

then try out one of a unique flavour, blueberry peanut mille crepe. Peanut lover would love this as the taste of peanut is slightly strong yet did not overpower the taste of blueberry and vanilla taste of it. @ RM 9.90

humble (9)

Over a few Mille Crepe I have tasted so far, I prefer Humble Beginning more as the taste is less sweet, not too condense and most of the layer crepe or well balance and moist. This is one of my favourite mille crepe shop. Recommended~

Well, now they just open their latest outlet in Bangsar as you can head there to try it out.. .

There is 2 row of shop houses sitting right in the middle of the whole neighbourhood in Damansara Heights, you will be spoil for selections of what to dine in this area. Not only that, its an area also pretty well know for Happy Hours with a few bar is in this area. The Full Moon Bar is no exception from that too.

[No Longer In operation] – currently is Huckleberry

Moon (1)

Operating about a year plus, it had start to gain popularity around the non muslim as this is one of a only very few outlets that serve Pork. With hot weather recently, its a great bonus to discover that they are serving set lunch now starting from RM12.90.

Moon (2)

Moon (3)

AS the night is young, we are serve with their signature Mojitos.

Moon (4)

We get to sample some of their signature for the night that starting off witha platter of Spicy Fried Chicken Wing, Black Pepper Lamb Parcels, Fried Breaded Mozzarella and a skewer of Roast Pork Belly and Chargrilled Honey Lime Chicken.

Moon (5)

If you do hang out at the outlet for beers, then Roast Pork Belly and Chargrilled Honey Lime Chicken will pair very well with it as the marination of both dish is very well done and cook to perfection, along with the chicken is fried till crips and aromatic.

Moon (6)

Next we were told to challage on this dish with its excessive spiciness level  is Butter Briyani Rice with Spicy Sri Lankan Tamarind Pork Belly and Mutton Varuval.  When this plate is serve, the aroma of the curry and spices filled up our nose instantly. First few bites of the briyani rice is bursting with spices and flavours are awesome! Then after that, I am burst with excessive spiciness that just hit hard on my tongue. Love the taste of the spiciness, but not really a fan of cloves as they cook pretty much in it. If they tone it down, then would have been a perfect dish.

Both Pork Belly and Mutton are cook to perfection with the curry are well marinate and coated on the meat. Taste of Mutton is more outstanding than the pork.

Moon (7)

As the days pass, the demand of  Hokkien Mee for supper is pretty good. With consumption of beer into our belly, the version of Hokkien Mee is shower with alot of Chu Yau Cha (Pork Lard). If you find that the current serving is lack of  it, you can just order extra Pork lard at RM 4. For a Bar to cook Hokkien Mee, I must say its pretty impressive!

Moon (8)

Not only Hokkien Mee in Demand as their Bak Kut Teh is also another popular dish among many people who are looking for supper in the outlet.

Moon (9)

Broth been cooked for hours to get the best taste of it, and do note that the taste of the soup here is not strong in herbs as customer here prefer mild version.

Moon (10)

At the end of the meal, we were pamper with Cheng Yi (Fatboybakes) cakes. As always, his cakes never dissapoint us and always on top notch. If you do plan to order, can check out his website. fatboybakes.blogspot.com

Moon (11)

If you are lazy to drive far and staying around the area, then Moon Bar might be one of your choice with add on bonus as on Friday nights. With veteran jazz pianist David Gomes and friends, known as the “David Gomes Trio”, will entertain all of you for the night.
