When comes to Penang hawker food, its pretty hard to resist it. I believe during this holiday season many of you are up in the north to hunt for all these street food. One of my favourite area is this little street that have some variety for you to choose from is this Chulia Street Hawker.
A place that many food hunters spread that the Wan Tan Mee, Curry Mee and Stir fried (Char Hor Fun, Ee Foo Mee) to die for. Its been a long time since I last came here and decided to drop by again to do a blog post.
I was so hungry that I order Koay Teow Th’ng and I finish it only remember I have to capture the picture. The soup base is sweet from hours of boiling with bones and the uncle use duck meat that comes to my liking with added little cubes of garlic and pork lard. Perfect.
I walk further down abit at the little junction then saw this Char Kuih Kak.
Love mine to add extra bean sprout and ‘Chai Poh’ (salted Turnip) to make it extra umph fried it itn small pieces upon request.
This is the classic packaging of take away Kuih Kak.
The smell and look of it wasnt impressive as its not fried dark enough with dark soy sauce, added dark egg suppose to be extra kick turns out to be mild. Not so good as I expected.
This is good, the stir fried stall next to a fruit juice stall. Need to wait a while for it and its filled with wok hei. I only eat Ee Foo Mee in Penang as the noodle texture in KL are slightly different and the starchy base is also much better in Penang. Added an egg would have been perfect as its semi cook, that mine the uncle forgot to add in.
Hearsay Curry Mee here are quite good, but I prefer mine that the soup base is slightly stronger and chili paste is in fiery red and much spicier. The taste of soup base here is slightly more mild but definitely have their own regular crowd. You have to wait at least 20 minutes for a bowl.
Char Koey Teow here is not the best but would not recommend to order.
On that day, more famous Wan Tan Mee stall did not open so didnt try it out as there are 2 stalls here. The better ones are next to the Fruit Juice stall. Average waiting time for a plate is 30mins – 45 minutes. Do have patience when you dine around the area as its one of a famous hawker spot for local Penangnites.
Enjoy street food on next upcoming holiday season.
Chinese New Year is just around the corner, which I could not believe myself too. Next weekend, all of us will be heading back for Reunion dinner. Nevertheless, alot of restaurants and hotels now do offer great food for reunion dinner as many families had opted to eat out instead of cooking at home because on ambiance and convenience.
As for this round, we head to Checkers Cafe located inside Dorsett Regency Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
Checkers cafe offers a great soothing ambiance which is perfect for family gathering as the whole place is comfortable, can be separate out with other diners also indulge with a very simple decoration to stir up the mood of CNY.
Once we were seated, we were greated by this huge Pineapple as a special welcome drink called Prosperity Splash Drink (Mixtured of Pineapple, Mandarin orange, Dragon Fruit juice and hint of honey) indeed its a thirst quencher drink that you will never had enough.
What we are having for the night is a 8 course dinner that prepared by a great Chinese chef.
Of course like any other celebrations during Chinese New Year and before dinner or everything starts, we will always starts with ‘Lou Sang’ which is only a tradition that available in a few countries around South East Asia. The thick sauce is specially made with chef’s own recipe to enhance on the taste of the ‘lou sang’. Their unique of Yee Sang is that ‘Salmon Yee Sang with crispy Salmon skin’.
Fresh Salmon ‘Yee Sang’ for the night . . . .
As preparation, you mix everything what is next to the plate on sauce and other ingredients.
In the process of Yee Sang, by using a chopstick and stick inside the Yee Sang then you say out loud your “auspicious wishes” for the year, every toss say one wish whereby mostly is high salary, good business, good health and many more. The higher you toss,
This is usually the aftermath of lou sang and this consider not that bad, as for me and my friend, it did fly to someone’s hair before and the whole portion left half as another half is on the table. 😀
A very delicious, savory with a bit sweet, sour, crispy salmon skin that kick a perfect start before dinner. One of a good Yee Sang that I have come across so far. . .
Pan-fried Lamb Rack with Chef Special Sauce
This is the super star of the night as one piece would not be enough. I think I do not mind to have at least 5 pieces of this that it is well marinated till the sauce got into the meat, well quoted with the sauce that make it very juicy and not only that, the meat is so soft till it nearly melts, no lamb gammy taste which is a perfect dish for every one. Highly Recommended!
Braised Shark’s Fin with Assorted Seafood
During Chinese new Year, Shark Fin will mostly fill onto the table as they are quite generous with the ingredient. I can eat chunks of crab meat, fish maw and assorted seafood every spoonful of it.
Followed by Steamed Chicken with Herbs.
Juicy and soft meat with the herb sauce soak onto the meat and make every bite delicious.
Deep Fried Cod Fish with Superior Soya Sauce
This is also another favourite dish for the night, as the fish being deep fried on the outer layer till its crispy then shower along with superior soy sauce. Always love the texture of cod fish which is soft and moist. – Recommended
Deep Fried Prawns with Seafood Sauce
Fresh prawn that indicates by the solid meat texture and the seafood sauce pairs it very well.
Braised Fish Maw, Sea Cucumber, Dried Oyster and Black Mushroom with seasonal vegetable
Fried Rice with ginger and salted egg
Fried hot from the wok with ‘wok hei’ a bit salty and I still add in some soy sauce to further bring up the taste. Its simple and good to further fill my stomach.
Steamed Nian Gao which is prepared by the chef himself as its a bit softer compare to those I have eaten so far and I love Nian Gao alot as get to eat once a year. I love it to well coated with lots of coconut.
Golden Sesame Ball with Red Bean paste
For the first time I am trying Sweetened Red Bean Paste, as I mean the red bean had been blend into a very thick to make this desert out. Usually I eat this in watery base filled with Red Bean chunks.
This is the Sous Chef Lai behind the wok that had created this great range or Perfect Dinner menu that have all what a Reunion dinner needs. In this menu many chinese believe in every dinner must have Prawns, Fish, Chicken, dried oyster and nian gao. All have their own meaning in a Chinese New Year Dinner.
I certainly would recommend for their CNY Chinese Menu if you wanted to go for reunion dinner at this hotel. Great food ~
We were also given cup cakes with Dragon Icon and gold. The cake is moist and nice!
If you do not like their Chinese NEw Year menu you can opt for their buffet that have a good range too.

After touring around the city, then all of us were pretty exhausted by the morning flew over, Press Conference and Official Launch of SANYO Xacti, mini tour of the Resort World and just head into the restaurant. When we reach the restaurant and were told by the rest of the friends, that the restaurant was actually located quite near Universal Studio and we walk one big round towards this place but it was a good window tour. . .
Here we are, in Chinoiz Restaurant that serve Fine Chinese Food.
Love the interior with a bit of modern Oriental style, lit with dim light and the place is very comfortable.
That I do not mind to sit there and chat all night long~
The selection of alcohol prepare for all the guest.
with French wine is one of the selection for the night.
We were there early, and we manage to take a lot of pictures with the models and some of the products.
The picture printing were sponsor by Sanyo and it was printed on the spot.
Then not long after that, they move us to a VIP room, the whole room just for us, Malaysian Media.
and I look at the menu, I got all excited bymyself, and I told Witch, she got excited too as we did not expect the food list would be so grand.
With the price tag on the menu, it certainly is reasonable if do not the conversion rate.
While we were happily chatting, then came a waitress ask us what drinks we would like to have and I ask her back, then she said, fruit juice (many types of juices including custom made order), red/white wine, Champaign, beer (Tiger, Heinaken, Tsing Tao) and we were like errrr errrrr..juices first.. all still very pai seh including me.
When the first guy start to order alcohol, then here comes the order for it.
We tried every selection of it. We love the wine as it was smooth and of course the best selection of all night was Red and champaign.
This is my selection.
Not long after the drinks, first dish of the night arrive with ‘Chilled Momotaro Tomato Salad topped with Sake marinated Confit of Lobster’. I just do not know how to say or I would say it was one of a perfect appetizer to start of with. Simple taste that preserves the fresh sweet taste of the lobster and tomato is to add in some sweet sour taste onto it, Perfect!
‘Double-boiled Shark’s fin with Sea Treasures served in Coconut’, when we saw this serving, we were like wahhh!!!! And the smell of the soup taste travels and fill into the room, till the moment it was place down, some of them even ready with spoon and attack , with just a slice of bacon on top of the soup was already unique yet inside a coconut shell. . .
To our surprise, we scoop up quite huge abalone in it and it taste awesome! Sweet, juicy and very aromatic with the soup taste.
then we also found a slab of shark fin, which was told it is a good quality, we never care, we just enjoy our soup, it was sweet, aromatic with seafood sweet taste and the coconut flavour did not overpower the rest of the taste. It was one of the best soup I have drank so far.
‘Crisp-fried Fillet of Marble Goby served with Mixed Green salad and Mint leaves’
As it looks pretty simple to me in such a long plate, but it proves me wrong. Fried crispy on the outer layer and the fillet in there is soft, by dipping with the sauce given, it just taste excellent!
‘Pan-seared Australian Wagyu beef with Foie Gras’
Pan grill to my liking with medium that cut it with sharp knife ooze out the juice and blood of it, dipping with the sauce on the plate, it taste good and the foie gras was grilled perfect too, that preserve the outer layer a bit cook and inside is soft and juicy. Great main course as it goes very well with the red wine.
‘Braised Mee Sua in Noble Tan Fu Sauce served with Freshly-peeled Crab Claw’
Fresh juicy solid crab meat that had cook well in it.
Mee sua that just cook in the right condition which is not too soft yet still soak the soup base of it while pulling up.
‘Gratin of Assorted Berries and Fruits in Passion Fruit Sabayon’ would be perfect for girls as all the berries are sour in taste with cream top on it, to me its not bad as I take it to cool down my alcohol level.
Then Nick Manage to pass us a unit of Xacti and Witch took her SD card to film it, and surprise us that the quality is good.
After we finish our dinner and alcohol keep pouring in, some that did not talk so much began to talk a lot, and suddenly bang…the 2 models came in and thought of trying to pose something different, James Bond in Soh Loook. 😀
Then of course in this kind of event, a group picture must not miss with bloggers, Magazine Media, Stuff, Click, Velocity, NST and some others.
with one of the manager that she and Nick host us for the night and of course the boss too. We just do not know what to say as the seriously pamper and provide us 5 star hospitality. Thank you is the only word I can say.
With all the booze being in all the time, and before we head back to hotel, of course we need to let it out and it is good to see ah Ong stim again~ and definately, this is one of the very first restaurant I would recommend in Singapore.
Bangsar had always been one of the exclusive place to dine at and yet as I always pass by Bangsar One which had now transform to one strech of bangalow restaurant which most of them had their very own style that had always caught my attention to dine there.
Anything more joyous than laughing with our loved ones in a cozy reunion dinner at this restaurant is something to be looking foward for.
To make you feel at home, we had done it from the ground up. You will enjoy a purposely built home-restaurant. You can enjoy your meals from our garden area, living area, private rooms, and dining area, upstairs or downstairs. You can go back to basics with our superb home styled dishes. You can enjoy your gathering here no matter how small or big your family is.
Love their concept of dining which is very simple and nice decoration in the restaurant yet giving you a pleasent feel.
As for the night is very young and we were serve with fruit juice yet to make the night extra umph we order beer to go along with.
During festive season, a dish that you must not miss the tradition…
Salmon Yee Sang with Crispy Shredded Treasures in Plum Dressing’
and this is befofre our lou sang ….
and the result of getting over excited that ends up like that….
Shark’s Fin Soup with Crab Meat and Dried Scallop in Winter Melon’
with its not too thick soup base that filled with stripes of shark fin’s and fresh crab meat add on with some vinegar that I just slurp the whole bowl within seconds. Not too strong in flavour yet its just nice, something clear.
House of Tang Braised Pork Trotter’
Is the best I have eaten so far on many dishes, as pork trotter I choose not to eat the fat’s part but this is truely exceptional. As the waiter was cutting the portion, I just cant wait to eat the pork as it smelllsssss so nice~ and the waiter did put some fats on my plate. My gawd, when I put into my mouth, the fat’s just melts on my tongue and it taste so good, with a bit sour, salty and thick sauce yet with the softness of the pork meat is just awesome.
This would be the first time I was fighting with the rest to hunt for the fat’s. Truely surprise my taste bud.
Japanese styles fleshy prawns (ming ha)’
Fried to perfection that the aroma of the ingredient wraps around the prawns strongly and I just enjoy the taste of it. Solid prawn meat shows the sign of freshness.
Assam ‘Tom Yam’ Garoupa Fish’Strong soury aroma was flying across the room when this was serve and I thought that its sure going to be very sour but again, caught me by suprise, the right sour level with the amount of spicness is there and to eat along with rice is the best combination.
Baked Chicken with Herbs’ Soft tender chicken with mild herbs taste just comes to my liking.
French Beans with Preserved Olives and Minced Meat’
Fried with ‘Wok Hei’ yet crispy french beans with mild saltiness of the mince meat just taste as good as it is that makes me think back the taste of dish that I had before at Melbourne.
Double Boiled Soup of the Day’
My choice among those 3 was the coconut soup. It was one of the best soup I ever had, mild coconut flavour yet with chinese herbs and the chicken was boil along with it to create the sweetness of the soup that taste like been steam for a long period of time.
The other two are good too, that steam to perfection to bring out the aroma of the ingrediant.
Special Homemade Layered Beancurd’
Braised Pork with Soya Sauce’
The amount of fats and the soft pork meat and I wish that it was less salty then it would taste mor perfect but I still loves the Pork Trotter.
The soft ‘Man Tou’ is to dip and eat along with the braised pork.
Claypot Pork Belly with Lotus Root’
Braised Dried Oysters with Fatt Choy, Top Shell, Sea Cucumber and Wok Fried Greens’
Steamed Rice with Waxed Meat in Lotus Leaf’ ‘????? ?????
Glutinous Rice Dumplings with Sea Coconut in Iced Lemon Syrup’
I just love tong yuen, I just don know why yet with sea coconut as the soup base its just the right combination that I ended up having 3 bowls even though I am very very full.
Crisp Fried Chinese Brown Sugar Cake’
Fried to crispyness yet once bit you can hear the crack sound and doesnt tasste sweet yet feels like eating ‘nian gau’.
‘Tau Fu Fah’ with Almond Cream’
‘Master Chef Koh’ is a very funny guy.. Jokes around and humble yet he is the man behind the scene that prepared all the amazing dish as for his age I would consider that very good yet the restaurant now in the festive mood adding in amazing values for every 1 to enjoy with the promotion below:
We were all fed till very full and it was truely a wonderful night for all of us, for my record, it would be the most dish(16) I have ever tried in one night and with the amazing host of the owner and Richard for arranging all of this, I am speechless but only can say thanks to you guys.
This restaurant is truely Highly Recommended by me.

House of Tang
No. 63B, Jalan Ara, bangsar Baru, 59100 kuala Lumpur.
I have heard a lot about this restaurant but never bother to go in, just do not know why. I thought it would be the same as Sushi Zanmai but I guess I was wrong (do not know whether it’s the same or not). Me and my friend was at Sunway and totally out of idea what to eat. Think of it, everything also about the same till my friend ask me what I want to eat and was up on the escalator then saw this place, which I have not dine before and good reviews from it.
As I have lost the receipt, and hopefully the name that I found is the same as the dish.
What caught my friend’s eyes was this tall fruit mock tail I would say, and looks good and known as ‘Heart Mix Fruit Juice’. A bit light in taste but the flavor of the mix fruit is there. Definitely will goes well with my food(in my thought)RM 12
Next which is this soup, I have been trying to order a lot of times at Sushi Zanmai but most of the time was finish or not available till not in the menu anymore. Then saw this, and it’s a must order for me. The strong miso soup taste is there that taste a bit sweet with the clamps that cook with it. Like it a lot~
As my friend is a egg lover, what she said was, the egg is just as good as it looks and as soft as baby’s skin. The soy sauce is not salty yet mild which is perfect. ‘Onsen Tamago’RM3
All the things in the menu look so tempting, yet in the spaghetti section, white sauce is always my first section that I look into and also my favorite sauce. Then came across this dish ‘Kinoko Tori no Cream Sauce’ soft tender chicken that cook along with the mushroom with the creamy sauce is just something that I could not ask for more. Around RM19
‘Hotate to Kinoko no Mentaimayo Pizza’(Grilled Scallop & Mushroom with spicy Cod Fish Roe, Mayonnaise on the Pizza). Gosh, the pizza was serve it smells so good and my friend’s hand was on the way there till I have to stop her from taking it. Then I kena say, fast fast take pic ler..want to eat already. Crispy thin layer of base crust and on with the topping is simply delicious. RM26
As my stomach on that day got a bit problem that I could not even digest the food from the afternoon, and did not really finish the meal for the first time and my friend she say me, yerrrr.. long long time eat once with you also cannot eat finish..heee. Then after that went back lau sai. Stomach need some system clearance after a while which is good for me.

New wing around Maybank area if not mistaken.
This is the place where a few of my friends been talking about when I am back, a must place to visit. I did not know since when Penang have such a nice place to chill or yum cha. It is called ‘Sunset Bistro’.
It gives you kinda the feeling when you are on your vacation in one of the nice island, and there are places like this for you to chit chat and drink beer. If you are too stress from your daily work, need a peaceful environment to calm your mind or need some good times with your friends or your gf/bf, I would strongly agree on this Bistro. If you are hungry they serve hawker to western food, beer, fruit juice, normal drinks but the kitchen close early at 1030-11.00 pm.
This is what I mean, a very relaxing place whereby they put music like, soft house, Jamaican, jazz, and some R n B towards middle of the night. You can just sit there close your eyes and listen to the music, enjoying the sea breeze and the sound of the wave splashing on the sea side.
If you would like to take picture, be there by 6.30, watch the sunset. I was at 9pm and only realise that if I would to come early it would be nice. I will be there again on 6.30 the next round.
This is the food that I ordered ‘Char KoayTeow‘. The taste of it has a very nice strong taste of the wok yet alil bit of the left over burn koayteow a bit which he take in on the noodle also which he did not throw it off. This food is quite satisfying as I was drinking with Tiger beer.
