Holiday Season

Browsing

When comes to Penang hawker food, its pretty hard to resist it. I believe during this holiday season many of you are up in the north to hunt for all these street food. One of my favourite area is this little street that have some variety for you to choose from is this Chulia Street Hawker.

hawker (1)

A place that many food hunters spread that the Wan Tan Mee, Curry Mee and Stir fried (Char Hor Fun, Ee Foo Mee) to die for. Its been a long time since I last came here and decided to drop by again to do a blog post.

hawker (2)

I was so hungry that I order Koay Teow Th’ng and I finish it only remember I have to capture the picture. The soup base is sweet from hours of boiling with bones and the uncle use duck meat that comes to my liking with added little cubes of garlic and pork lard. Perfect.

hawker (3)

I walk further down abit at the little junction then saw this Char Kuih Kak.

hawker (4)

Love mine to add extra bean sprout and ‘Chai Poh’ (salted Turnip) to make it extra umph fried it itn small pieces upon request.

hawker (5)

This is the classic packaging of take away Kuih Kak.

hawker (6)

The smell and look of it wasnt impressive as its not fried dark enough with dark soy sauce, added dark egg suppose to be extra kick turns out to be mild. Not so good as I expected.

hawker (7)

This is good, the stir fried stall next to a fruit juice stall. Need to wait a while for it and its filled with wok hei. I only eat Ee Foo Mee in Penang as the noodle texture in KL are slightly different and the starchy base is also much better in Penang. Added an egg would have been perfect as its semi cook, that mine the uncle forgot to add in.

hawker (8)

Hearsay Curry Mee here are quite good, but I prefer mine that the soup base is slightly stronger and chili paste is in fiery red and much spicier. The taste of soup base here is slightly more mild but definitely have their own regular crowd. You have to wait at least 20 minutes for a bowl.

hawker (9)

Char Koey Teow here is not the best but would not recommend to order.

On that day, more famous Wan Tan Mee stall did not open so didnt try it out as there are 2 stalls here. The better ones are next to the Fruit Juice stall. Average waiting time for a plate is 30mins – 45 minutes. Do have patience when you dine around the area as its one of a famous hawker spot for local Penangnites.

Enjoy street food on next upcoming holiday season.

[Remark] Its just so funny to see how I write a food blog post 3 years ago as this post was written 2009. Because of the pictures was deleted in blogspot now I have re-visited this place to make it available again. One of my favourite mee goreng – Mee Sotong place.
This is one of my favourite mee goreng stall or I would rate the best Mee Goreng in Penang, came back a few times, but did not manage to eat it, cuz it was close on Sunday and usually came back for the weekend and today, the crowd was suprisingly alot. I mean DAMM alot. I have to wait for 1 hour and 15 mins for this because it was holiday season. Wrong timing to eat.

mee sotong (5)

The pricing consider one of the very reasonable that they are offering with the portion being served. There is usually a queue when you go at, wrong timing. This is the crowd that ta pau, have not include the crowd that are dining in.Those people that ta pau were at least 4 packs and above. Celaka

mee sotong (7)

Tadaa…this is the ‘Mee Goreng Sotongthat been served. My favorite. Tambah Pedas pedas. Even though I cant really take spicy but to the hack, it taste bloody nice. The first 3 mouth I am already sweating like crazee, it is just worth the taste. Alot of sotong on top, taste a bit sweet and you have to stir the whole plate up. It has the ‘wok’ taste, not too dry compare to those like eating dry noodle. It only cost RM3.50 for this. (Now RM4)

mee sotong (6)

To those who could not take spicy noodle yet would want to enjoy this famous mee goreng, you can go for one without chili. Usually anything without chili is quite blend in taste. This plate of noodle is flavorful as they are fried with their own special sauce in it and mixture of sotong pull up the taste.

mee sotong (1)

With the noodle served, you people must not miss this stall. directly beside it. Their Signature drink which is…………………..

mee sotong (4)

‘ Coconut Shake’, it doesnt taste so sweet, have a very strong coconut juice taste, with vanilla-ice cream and of course the coconut meat in it. Only RM 2. It is very famous among all the patrons there.

mee sotong (3)

and for this last drink as being regular, the taukeh very nice, make me 1 very special refreshing juice which is called Limau Shake’ which not many people know about it. After having those spicy food. This will be the perfect drink to go along with it. You will have the feeling ahhhh…so satisfied. RM1.50 for this wonderfull drink

mee sotong (2)

Besides those, Ice Kacang in this stall seems a hit to many people, just that I do not really prefer it. Different taste bud.

If you are talking about school holidays or public holiday and any part of the hawker center you visit in Penang is gonna be crazy. As I was back during that holiday period and my dad were asking me to go for tim sum, its very hard to drag my ass up but then just have to cause its been a while since last breakfast with them and my dad ask me to choose the location. Usually our usual Tim Sum area would be Tai Tong as the price and the food quality definitely our first choice but since I have blog on that place and I chose to come to this tim sum place opposite KDU which is quite famous too.

As I forgot the name of this place as me and my friends usually called it Opposite KDU. If any of you out there do know the name please let me know. Thanks`

During holiday season, this would be the kind of crowd you would expect. To get a table, you have to learn to take care of your territory when people are finishing their meal. It is because those people would either ask their mom which is 50-60 years old or their kids to pretend to sit down then act like it was like they came first and wave to their family members to faster come over. This happens to me and I politely tell them that I was there already and the auntie act like nothing happens till the family member were there and told them the same thing and act like noting happen too. That piss me off and I scold them! Then they just walk off.

In this period of time, there would be hardly a cart that will be pushing around, and there is too, but when it will take a few rounds to reach your place. To make things easier you can just take a tray and directly go to their counter, to pick and choose those tim sum you want, would be much faster compare you have to wait.

Did not take much of the Tim Sum because wasn’t really hungry.. Just woke up not long and my stomach engine have not warm up yet.

My dad saw a lot of people ordering ‘Fish Head Noodle’ and he went to order too. Not a very good choice of pick as the soup is tasteless and taste like cooking it with boiling water with the added on of vegetable, ‘fried chu yau cha’ and fried fish head.
My sis wanted to eat the ‘Wan Tan Mee with Char Siew’ not my choice of it also. Quite pale in taste, yet taste a bit weird too.
‘Honey Dew Sago’ which is quite okay but too much milk taste and the honeydew in it is not sweet yet could taste the sugar syrup taste more.

As for overall, the food there is so so but really cannot deny that, the food there is very very cheap or would be one of the cheapest. As for us the total bill came less than RM45 for 5 of us and I did saw a table of 10, they have collected and filled their table full with tim sum that only left a small place for their plates and drinks only and cam whore with it.

If you are looking for a cheap plate for tim sum, this would be the place to eat in but you have to be on par with their food quality.
