Chinese New Year is just 2 weeks away. Everyone is already ushering and starting to prepare for Reunion dinner or gathering. This year CNY 2023 with Golden Phoenix at EQ KL is bringing us the classics. EQ brings back the legacy of
Golden Phoenix with food from its cherished menu archives.

Golden Phoenix restaurant has long held a reputation for culinary excellence since its inception in 1974.

Cantonese and Szechuan fare.

Chef Choy Sin Sang has been instrumental in continuing the Golden Phoenix legacy for many years. An
alumnus of Selangor Ching Wu School, Chef Choy studied the art of dim sum making at the Taiping Tea
House before working at his first hotel in 1957. He joined the original Equatorial Hotel in 1973, where he
has since ensured that the food from the Chinese kitchen is of the highest calibre and authenticity. It is
with great pride that EQ recreates the Golden Phoenix in all its glory every Lunar New Year.

Fried Rice had evolve to healthier level. I find this clever cooking as using okra, brown rice and the taste is subtle enough to bring a nice mild flavour journey

Prosperity Toss
Yee Sang, the hallmark of Chinese New Year, will be available from 5 January to 5 February 2023. The
most extravagant version is the premium abalone Yee Sang with fish roe (RM188+, portion serves four
to six; RM368+, portion serves eight to ten), followed by the Hokkaido scallop Yee Sang with fish roe
(RM188+, portion serves four to six; RM368+, portion serves eight to ten). Other options include crispy
white bait and fish skin (RM118+, portion serves four to six; RM228+, portion serves eight to ten),
smoked salmon with soft shell crab (RM168+, portion serves four to six; RM328+, portion serves eight
to ten), and the Korean snow pear variant (RM108+, portion serves four to six; RM208+, portion serves
eight to ten). Additions range from extra crispy fritters from RM8+ per portion, jelly fish (RM28+), Korean
snow pear (RM28+), crispy fish skin (RM38+), salmon (RM58+), whitebait (RM78+), 10 pcs of 20-head
whole abalone (RM148+), 4 Hokkaido scallops (RM138+), and soft shelled crab (RM68+).

I personally think that it is a good bargain that you can eat all pretty good Italian food and with choices of Wine or Champange to go along. Of course with different sets of pairing comes with different pairing with prices as below:

  1. For Buffet only is RM 188 nett per pax
  2. add RM 160 nett for Free flow – Red wine, white wine, proscesso, draft beer, special Sunday cocktail, soft drinks and chilled juice
  3. or add RM 260 nett for all the above as in no.2 and with addtional Moet Chandon Champange

Those who loves seafood, this might be the area you would want to attack. It is pretty fresh on that day especially for oyster and scallop.

We are all enjoying our buffet and I am enjoy both champange. Personal preference, I prefer prosecco more as goes well with what I am having.

Entering into a cozy zone where the area is filled with high glass which makes it a perfect place for a photo shoot by using natural light.

Start off with their cocktail series 

Sky 33 @ RM 35 nett – filled with kiwi juice, middle with vodka on ice, cubes of vodka jelly for the added kick. Not only that, as if you have this in the afternoon, it is very refreshing with a hint of sourish end from kiwi.

Selangor Sling @ RM 48 nett. Tanqueray Gin hibiscus syrup, elder flower syrup, pineapple juice, dash of absinthe shaken and top with a roselle flower. This might be slightly too strong for me where maybe others will enjoy it.

We start off with mushroom tea @ RM 35 nett. Where the soup base is separated and being boiled for long hours to get the clarity and aroma of it. Pouring out it from the pot with a bed of mushroom making it very unique and serve with some fried mushroom serve at the side. Taste is light and aromatic.

For their mains – 3some Meat Platter (serve 2 pax) @ RM 250 nett . . . Serving you a nice beautiful cut of lamb rack, sirloin steak and spring chicken with a a bed of greens at the side.

They have also prepared their secret dressing into injection tube for you to add on the flavors on your meat. Sirloin is cook to perfection where it is medium rare and out of expectation, the spring chicken is a clear winner if to compare to the other two. It is soft, juicy, and aromatic on the effect of marination.

I guess this is the main highlight for the presented dish is their Nasi Lemak 2.0 @ RM 30 where not only Nasi Lemak is being rated as one of the healthier food in a online portal, their nasi lemak presentation is on a whole new level. Steam rice is cook along in a fresh coconut that release a very nice mixture of aroma into the rice. There are two different taste where the top of the rice, it is clear and aromatic in coconut taste, however as you dig deeper, the taste of coconut meat had change the flavour of it. Taste more like eating coconut meat grains.

Eating it with their spicy prawn sambal, anchovies and chicken rendang or ayam berempah,   is one of the best way to enjoy our fresh pippin hot plate of nasi lemak.

For dessert, they serve Cherry Bomm where a sphere of white chocolate with a field of edible flowers and raspberries.poured with high temperature chocolate is being poured onto the white chocolate to allow it to melt and create a hole in it. Right inside the hole, you will be finding some other little ingredients in it.

Back to classic, they have re-created Le Bon Vivant Ice Kepal @ RM 20nett which makes it our child hood memory of this ice ball where they have also further tweak on it. As you dig deeper, you will be greeted with a huge scoop of ice cream sitting in the middle for you to dig deeper. Topped with raspberries and drenched with syrup into the shaved ice.
