So I was brought to this laksa at Ayer Itam Round about located right opposite Sui Wah Supermarket.

NED_6507_resize

I was recently introduce to this stall by my friend that this is another new joint that I found that served good laksa as I find that the one at Ayer Itam Market is very commercialise and I do not really like the taste of it. I find that this taste much better.

This few hawker stalls is located at the round about of Ayer Itam Junction and now it had attracted many other local tourist as when I was there, alot people speak cantonese in the area.

This is one fine bowl of laksa that comes with a lot of mixture of vegetable such as finely sliced vegetables including onions, cucumber, red chillis, pineapple, lettuce, mint and pink bunga kantan then shower a few rounds with sour and and a bit spicy soup base, also a spoonfull of ‘Heh Koh’ (prawn paste). RM3.50

laksa

The noodle is silky smooth and slurp it all the way into my mouth, texture of it a bit chewy that comes to my liking. Soup base is one of my prefered choice as it cook along with fish meat that had been smash and every sip I can bite some of the fish meat. It is sour and spicy enough that can satisfy my crave.

NED_6509.0_resize

Next stall that is quite famous among there is this Duck Meat Koey Teow Soup that the soup is very aromatic with its well cook soup base with duck bone, pork bone and a few other ingredients that make it sweet, served along with duck meat and some pork lard to make it superb in taste. RM 3.50

Penang Rojak is also another dish that you must have which is a mixture of fruits and mix with prawn paste. This is not the best stall and find that the prawn paste is quite salty and its expensive as for this small portion its RM4.

Penang is always known for its hawker food and around Ayer Itam area which is well know for their morning market for all the neighbors to buy fresh ingredient to cook or even supplies to restaurant which makes them one of the big market in Penang. I did write about a famous elderly selling classic curry mee in the  market, click here.  Around the area there are many hawker which are famous tag along the morning market, one which is in particular was one of my friends favourite Kueh Chap stall is in this Wah Meng Kopitiam that host also variety of food.

kuih chiap (1)

Do not have a proper sign for it as the main entrance are all covered up with busy hawker stalls.

kuih chiap (2)

instead the signage are hidden inside ..  which is next to a TOTO store. .

kuih chiap (3)

In the early morning, this coffee shop is pack with lots of people..not to mention during public holidays or long weekend.

kuih chiap (5)

Then they have this nasi kandar stall infront of them . .

kuih chiap (4)

kuih chiap (6)

selling Roti Canai next to it which is done fresh while ordering . .

kuih chiap (7)

kuih chiap (8)

and here comes my thin fluffy roti Kosong as its not bad just that the curry gravy is quite watery which turns it to be quite disappointing for RM 0.70 per piece, no complain.

kuih chiap (9)

Then I saw this uncle stall for Char Koey Teow frying non stop, yet I have tried. . .

kuih chiap (10)

and Char Kueh Kak also . .

kuih chiap (11)

This is the famous Kueh Chap which my friend is talking about and we waited for bout 25 minutes for it ..

kuih chiap (12)

It is one of my favorite and its very hard to find in KL.

kuih chiap (13)

and according to some explanation that I found over Google, this is actually a Teochew dish that started off during Ming Dynasty, which previously known as Ding Bian Cuo (鼎邊挫) or Ding Bian Hu (鼎邊糊), being translated as Wok-side Cooking or Wok-side Frying. Read more at javewu.

Kueh Chap is a word from Hokkien language and can be found in a few states like Penang, Johor, Kuching and Singapore. In Penang we utilise the whole duck including the spare parts of it like innards, blood, intestine to add it in and some other states they used pork.

kuih chiap (14)

This is the classic bowl of Penang version Kueh Chap ((flat broad rice sheets))

kuih chiap (15)

kuih chiap (16)

which is filled with kueh a texture similar like flat big koey teow type to cook along and add in all the duck parts in it like braised duck meat, bean curd, congealed blood, hard-boiled egg and innards of intestines and liver. Then top with fried garlic oil on top to bring the extra kick in it. The soup is black in colour that its boil along with the duck and aromatic, yet I find it a bit salty after finishing the whole bowl, i still prefer mine  to have it in thicker soup base which is located at Kimberly street that I didnt blog bout it, then overall it is still quite satisfying to have it in early morning.

Last round when I back to Penang for Chinese New Year, a few days before the festive season, woke up early and went to one of the busiest market at housing area which is the Ayer Itam Market. The market had been here from many decades ago that start to originate people that stay up in the hill brings down fresh vegetable to sell. From time to time the market had develop till as what it is today.

During festive season, this market is super packed with people to do their last minute shopping and it is advisable to park your car a bit far as very limited parking space available, with its narrow street just enough for 2 cars to passby.

Ti Kuih is one of the item that must buy during Chinese New Year. After a short stroll, we head to a nearby kopitiam for breakfast.

Kedai Kopi Kapin is one a famous kopitiam around the neighbourhood  . . . One of the hawker stalls to look after is the Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee) which have people lining up for it.

As we order too many food for 3 of us then we just order only just Wan Tan to try out and the skin is very soft just that the sesame oil is abit strong.

Penang Curry mee is always one of my favourite, cuz they have ‘Pig Blood’ and the chili is their own homemade style that makes every one is different in taste.  RM3

‘Pork Noodle’ as I always prefer my version in Koey Teow with Mee and this are cook instant. The soup taste is okay only, as I prefer my soup base to be a bit thick in flavour and a bit more of pork lard. RM3

This is the signature of the shop ‘Prawn Mee’ with some of us like to add a bit of ‘Loh’ which is the soup base for ‘Loh Mee’ that makes it a kind of Prawn Mee (ying yong style) which is most of the people are ordering. The loh is a bit thick and the prawn mee soup base is sweet, that ‘pai kuat’ taste is in there, shows that used alot of pork bone. RM 2.80

Then we walk to a street next to it and I found something more interesting which is this whole street sell Curry Mee with at least around 3-4 stalls selling the same thing. Ken told me that every stall have their own style of chili and soup base which makes them have their very own customer base.

We sit to this stall and I was very curious, this ‘Chee Cheong Fun’ stall is very busy and non stop customer coming in and I decided to give it a try. The chee cheong fun is very good, very soft ‘fun’ that mix with thick texture of shirmp paste ‘Heh Kor’ and their very own homemade chili and fried onions. RM1.50

Then I stroll around among other stalls and this stall which is family operated and this 2 ah ma working so hard preparing in a very traditional by using charcoal, and people keep pouring in to buy. I also give it a try.

As what I said, every stall is packed and have their own style, and this ah ma different is the squid and the sauce of it.

Mild sweet soup base add with their own homemade chili with squid makes this bowl of curry mee quite unique in taste. A bit spicy yet sweet and I quite like the soup base. Bought a packet for my parents and they don like it. I guess it depends on individual taste. A good try . . .

This is located along the entrace of a Chinese School.

Last trip of back to Penang, Seh Poh Kio the first thing when I reach back after dumping all my luaguage back at home and went to pick up my friend, heading to Seh Poh Kio for supper. There are very limited places in Penang to hunt for Chinese food during at night after 12am. I was craving for burger that night around 1.30am.

The business of this stall its good at most of the time, depends on your luck when you dropping by that you have to wait long or wait for a while. Luckily on that night I did not wait for long as I was the 3rd person only.

The stall owner is the one leg kick person. Cook, wrap, and sell

My order was ‘Chicken Burger Special’ (Pg version means with Cheese and egg) as I love the version here as one of the best, well cook that preserve the taste of the slice of the chicken meat and well wrap around with the ngam ngam cook egg and top with a slice of cheese and cover with a layer of mayonnaise. RM4 if not mistaken.

Besides this stall that I usually enjoy eating from the thai hawker stall behind it was the ‘Fried Tomyam Maggie Mee’ a style of its own, not too spicy yet soury and filled with mini seafood is a taste that I am missing but on that night, the taste had change not as nice as it used to be. Still not bad but not as craving taste already. RM5
