Penang is indeed my hometown. Little did I know that there is actually a hidden gem inside Fort Cornwallis, a fort that being build during Captain Francis Light era. It is not only a heritage fort but also house a restaurant, Kota Dine & Coffee – when Francis meets rempah. This is what happen when Western meet East. A casual dining that focus on modern Nyonya Cuisine with a slight twist.

Kota (1)

To access into the restaurant, first you have to pay an entry fee like any other tourist whom is visiting the place. For adult you are paying RM 10 for adult and RM 5 for children whereby the fee is only with MyKad. (The fee is redeemable back upon minimum spending of RM 30, which can be easily achieved)

the British colonial guy is here to stop you.

Kota (5)

Honestly, this is my first time entering this heritage place. Quite a cool place, just a set back where if this place could turn into a weekend night market with pop up food store, arts and music would certainly be ideal .

For their new signature drink, it is quite interesting and personal favourite is  Singature. Sunrise: Orange, Lime, Mint, Mango, Sprite, Signature: Lemongrass,Lime,Min, Chili, Sprite, Sunset: Watermelon, Mint, Lime, Sprite, refreshing and thirst quencher after you explore the fort. As for the snacks, Prawn Bean Curd Fritters @ RM 15 – prawn, beancurd, cucumber, garden greens. A simple dish that fried to perfection and the dipping sauce lifted the taste. Great starter to kick start off with.

Kota (30)

On this tray platter, it is actually all their signature snacks from all the ala cart menu. They created this combination to allow diners to enjoy all their signature item under one tray. Jumbo Platter is served with – Pai Tee Cup, Chicken Lolipop, Samosa (Spiced Dumpling), Kerabu @ RM 38.

Love this presentation, as it resembles classic nyonya and however there is a simple twist and different interpretation for this dish. This is LAKSA – Kota Version. Filled with Kesom, Cucumber, Pineapple, Mint, Macakerel, Galangal and Rice Papper @ RM 25. I call this a deconstructed Laksa and it is clerverly done. Laksa noodle is roll with vineamese popiah skin and another half of the noodle is being dip fried. Shrimp paste is replace with rojak sauce top with pomegranate to give it slight sourish fruity end on top of the fresh cucumber and pineapple. Love the soup base as it is pack with flavours and a classic combination taste of chinese and malay laksa.

A recommended dish to start off with too.

This is a new version of stay. Satay @ RM 25

Satay is not always about skwers as the chef cleverly play it to make it like a sushi roll and top all the gravy on the top. Chicken is tender and the peanut sauce on the top is good enough to balance out the aroma of the seasoning.

Kota (41)

Nyonya @ RM 25
Next on the line is this cleverly platted where it is colourful and pop out from the classic plate. the signature nyonya rice plated with the blue pea flower rice sandwiched in the middle with the rendang chicken on the top and otak otak at the below. Each bite is burst with flavour which is not overly powered yet I can finish the whole plate by myself.

Kota (42)

Kota Chili Crab @ RM 25. Oriental Chili crab sandwich with soft shell crab, crab meat, tomato, chilli, mantou, ebiko, cucumber papardelle.

Kota (46)

Love their presentation of dessert, that is filled with creativity. Presenting you Nasi Lemak Cake , yup not burger but [email protected] RM 19. Cakes that is build with layers from inspiration of our traditional breakfast. Quite interesting taste profile and it is a love hate relationship. Either you like it or you dont. The cake is nearly there just thought that they might be missing 1 or 2 more element or ingredient.

Kota (47)

Kota (48)

Among the desserts, this is my personal favourite. Classic with a simple twist where The Nyonya Tiramisu is the Italian dessert with its ingredient of mascarpone cheese switched with local kopi-o (black coffee), coconut milk and coconut flakes cooked with palm sugar. It is airy, and pack with flavour. The Kopi o is NOT for you to pour it in but for you to sip after you have a spoonful of tiramisu.

Crème Brulee @ RM 19
This is not creme brulee 3 ways but 3 different types of Creme Brulee.  Pandan Crème Brulee, Egg Cream Brulee and the Gula Melaka Crème Brulee with local twist. To end with this last dessert, I also order one of their signature pour coffee. The coffe profile is rather mild and direct that I think pairs well with this dessert.

Honestly, I am proud that eatery in Penang is moving a notch up, as Penang is not only an island is famous for street food but a good flair in food is what we need to grow the F&B industry to another new level. For such Penang Nyonya cuisine with a modern touch. This is indeed will be one of my top recommendation restaurant if you are looking for some exploitative taste whereby the price is very reasonable. Hope they maintain the quality over the years.

Any of you love Penang food? I guess most of you do right and most of you would travel up North during long weekend for the awesome street food. Guess what! Now we have discover one new outlet that newly open in Kota Damansara recently that sell alot of best Penang street food under one roof, known as Penang One. Their first outlet is in Bandar Puteri, Puchong.

pg 1 (1)

Located in the heart of Kota Damansara where parking would be a big headache for you and this doesnt stop us from hunting it. Since our first visit, we have been going back as regular and I must say that the food is as good as where you can find in Penang. Definately not 100% but its at 80% similar which is good for us down in Klang Valley here.

pg 1 (2)

I am sure many of you still have yet discover fully where is the best food in Penang and the same goes to me. The owner have this big mission that wanted to provide folks in KL for good Penang food and therefore he himself as a Penangnite have work out a contract with all this famous hawker people to provide all the ingredients. All this being transport down to KL 2 days once. Therefore the taste is pretty much 80% the same as the famous hawker owner train all the staff themselves..

pg 1 (3)

The owner have marked down all the famous hawker stall location in the map and light history on the wall where he brought down here.

pg 1 (4)

Here you go on the list if you fancy any of the street food.

pg 1 (5)

Place here are pretty cozy and service here is pretty good~

pg 1 (6)

If you worry how they cook your meal and they have open concept kitchen for your viewing and those of you who loves the Tambun Biscuits & now they are available here too with the brand Him Heang which is one of my favourite brand. Now you need not queue that long as its while stock last daily.

pg 1 (7)

Lets see what we can have here and 8 of us are already very hungry.

pg 1 (8)

What is available in the menu is sufficient to stop our craving back in our hometown and we particularly ordered the whole menu, to try out on the taste.

pg 1 (9)

Homemade Otak Otak which is one of my favourite, no doubht that this taste exactly the same as one of my favourite stall. Steam to perfection that its soft on the outside and a huge slice of fish being inserted in the middle with fragrant leaves that absorb it very well. RM4.50 I have no complain in that.

pg 1 (10)

Those of you that miss Chee Cheong Fun, its all the way from Macalister Road. Prawn paste is good and just thick enough to coat around the chee cheong fun and although its not from my favourite Genting Kopitiam but this is as good as an alternative for me. @RM 3.90

pg 1 (16)

I certainly love Bak Chang – Special Dumpling @ RM 8.90 and alot people come here make a take away back to other country as they are being made fresh and air tight it in a pack of 8 if not mistaken. Then just put it into a boiling water for 5 minutes then you can eat it after that, with sticky rice and not too salty yet with generous amount of Ingredient.

pg 1 (21)

Another version of Bak Chang will be the white base and if not mistaken is the Teo Chew style as the filling is more towards peanuts. Not bad either as Ken loves this one and me prefer the traditional one.

pg 1 (17)

For Loh bak is hail all the way from Kheng Pin Kopitiam if not mistaken as I did saw a visual on that kopitiam on the wall. The Loh Sauce is as good as it is that is thicken, prawn crackers are fried to perfection. @RM 11.90

pg 1 (18)

The Asam Laksa is pretty well known in Lorong Selamat that I have not try before. When you talk about Lorong Selamat everyone’s thought would be Char Koey Teow! Nevertheless this is as good as it is, that cook with alot of mince fish meat and top with a few slices of fish as the top as we add on with additional RM1.50 . Soup is as good as the famous ones in Penang, sour enough and light spicy end with fish fragrant taste.. @ RM 8.50

pg 1 (11)

This is another stall that I have not tried before in Penang which is Kampung Jawa Char Koey Teow and I ask my friend they say its very good and their business hours is only from 7am – 10am daily and have to wait at least 30 minutes – 45 minutes for your plate to be serve. Will go back and try the original one but before that, the Char Koey Teow in this outlet best most of the stalls in KL. Cook till with wok hei and the koey teow is slight dry to my linking and top with huge prawns @RM 9.50

pg 1 (12)

This is the Yam Cake @ RM 5.50

pg 1 (13)

Ahh, version of Curry Mee is hard to find in Klang Valley they need to be serve along with pork blood. Most of the curry mee here is in curry soup base. Penang version is, soup is fragrant with light pandan and mild santan taste the follow I add in one full scoop of curry to make it fiery red. Perfect as it is. @ RM 8.50

pg 1 (14)

I get to know that Klang Valley is not pretty well known for Duck Meat Koey Teow Soup but i have always love mine in this version. Sou is sweet and filled with duck meat, fish balls, pork balls and fish cake that all is home made except pork ball.

pg 1 (15)

If you love New World Park Ice Kacang then you gonna love this as it taste exactly the same. I prefer the Ice Kacang @ RM 6.50 more than the Cendul.

pg 1 (19)

This make no exception as well Tee Nya Kuih from there as well @ RM 3.50. Have to be serve chill then add in gula melaka to eat along. Soft as it is and gula melaka is not too sweet.

pg 1 (20)

Muar Chee @ RM 3.90, as the difference is the peanut base as its slightly more fine.

pg 1 (22)

Rojak @ RM 7.50 is not the best one from Penang to my own preference but some they love it as well.

pg 1 (23)

This is my very own special request on my chilhood snacks. A huge slice of Seng Kuang then top the rojak sauce on the top add on with peanuts after that.

pg 1 (24)

This is what happen to us when we found something good and hail all the way back from our hometown. We order so much that we inteded to give it a sharing at first and end up most of us having each plate each.

If you are craving for Penang food and lazy to drive all the way up north, here is one of the best place you can find in Klang Valley and no complain at all. It beats alot of stall out there, and had become our weekly affair,  some is daily. 😀

Price is pretty reasonable with the concept that the owner is trying to do and portion is average. Not too big nor too small or if you compare to KL serving portion its definitely slightly smaller. A highly Recommended place by me for Penang food.

[Remark] Its just so funny to see how I write a food blog post 3 years ago as this post was written 2009. Because of the pictures was deleted in blogspot now I have re-visited this place to make it available again. One of my favourite mee goreng – Mee Sotong place.
This is one of my favourite mee goreng stall or I would rate the best Mee Goreng in Penang, came back a few times, but did not manage to eat it, cuz it was close on Sunday and usually came back for the weekend and today, the crowd was suprisingly alot. I mean DAMM alot. I have to wait for 1 hour and 15 mins for this because it was holiday season. Wrong timing to eat.

mee sotong (5)

The pricing consider one of the very reasonable that they are offering with the portion being served. There is usually a queue when you go at, wrong timing. This is the crowd that ta pau, have not include the crowd that are dining in.Those people that ta pau were at least 4 packs and above. Celaka

mee sotong (7)

Tadaa…this is the ‘Mee Goreng Sotongthat been served. My favorite. Tambah Pedas pedas. Even though I cant really take spicy but to the hack, it taste bloody nice. The first 3 mouth I am already sweating like crazee, it is just worth the taste. Alot of sotong on top, taste a bit sweet and you have to stir the whole plate up. It has the ‘wok’ taste, not too dry compare to those like eating dry noodle. It only cost RM3.50 for this. (Now RM4)

mee sotong (6)

To those who could not take spicy noodle yet would want to enjoy this famous mee goreng, you can go for one without chili. Usually anything without chili is quite blend in taste. This plate of noodle is flavorful as they are fried with their own special sauce in it and mixture of sotong pull up the taste.

mee sotong (1)

With the noodle served, you people must not miss this stall. directly beside it. Their Signature drink which is…………………..

mee sotong (4)

‘ Coconut Shake’, it doesnt taste so sweet, have a very strong coconut juice taste, with vanilla-ice cream and of course the coconut meat in it. Only RM 2. It is very famous among all the patrons there.

mee sotong (3)

and for this last drink as being regular, the taukeh very nice, make me 1 very special refreshing juice which is called Limau Shake’ which not many people know about it. After having those spicy food. This will be the perfect drink to go along with it. You will have the feeling ahhhh…so satisfied. RM1.50 for this wonderfull drink

mee sotong (2)

Besides those, Ice Kacang in this stall seems a hit to many people, just that I do not really prefer it. Different taste bud.

Again, I have visited some where ulu (suburb) again, Kota Damansara 2. To me its kinda far from KL all the way there but if you mention about the food quality, its worth everything. In that urban ulu place and if you are looking for a home cook with solid aromatic taste, this is the shop you must hunt for, Mum’s Seafood Noodle House.

Mums

Located in the heart of this urban ulu area which is a few doors away from this very famous The Wok restaurant.

Mums (2)

Its brand new in this area with just operating a few months old and not many people know about this great place.

Mums (3)

Offering alot of local delights.

Mums (5)

Let’s kick off with our very first meal of the night ‘Mum’s Fish Head Bee Hoon’ RM 7.80 and if you are looking for something light and flavorful, go for this, salty with the salty veggie and sour yet cook with milk till boil temperature is something to look for.

Mums (6)

‘Nyonya Chicken’ had been stir fried till the curry is a bit dry to ensure the flavor all soak into the soft tender chicken meat and to eat it along with rice, I can just enjoy this dish with a bowl of plain rice. RM12.80

Mums (7)

‘Mum’s Noodle Seafood Prawn Soup’ filled with big prawns, lala, squid and bamboo clamps and they are quite big in size and with the price charge on it, RM13.80, no complain at all.

Mums (8)

‘Ju Hu Char’ had been fried till very aromatic sweet with the meng kuang juice ooze out and blend well with the Ju Hu and it’s a bit sweet salty in taste that wrap with the veggie is taste so good. All of us keep taking big portion of it. RM10.80 – recommended

Mums (9)

I am a fan of squid especially when it is stuff with homemade ingredient like this ‘Stuff Squid with Prawns’ is very chewy on the meat, aromatic steam taste of the prawn when its stuff in there, end with their special salty sauce pour upon is given thumbs up by us. RM18.80

Mums (10)

This is how the fresh pranw ingredient are stuff in it, with the sauce to eat along with rice, yumm~

Mums (11)

I have eaten loh bak in KL a lot but to get the exact feel, its hard to find not until the very first discovery ends here for this time, with the price of RM8.80 (2 rolls) is all worth the price. Solid meat strip ingredient instead of mince meat, is to ensure when you bite it, you can enjoy the solid and aromatic of the meat instead of the mince when you put into your mouth all spread over. I would say one of the best ‘Loh Bak’ I have eaten so far in KL.

Mums (12)

‘Stir Fried Fish Head in Salted Egg Yolk’ RM16.80 is a highly recommended dish by me. Deep fried of the crispiness of the edge of the fish head yet been fried again in the wok with salty egg yolk and stick on all with the meat, very flavorful on the saltiness of the yolk and a bit of buttery taste, just perfect. Had 2 rounds of this as it was finish by us before others had a chance. Kekeke

Mums (13)

‘Stir Friend Prawn with Golden Garlic’ as the prawn is deep fried and then end with crispy deep fried garlic on top of the prawn with curry leaves is very savory. Sold prawn meant shows the sign of fresh prawn used and with the size like that, its satisfying.

Mums (14)

We were next hit by the look of something salty but then when it was put into our mouth, the spiciness had spread its power to entice on our taste bud yet the gravy to eat with rice, we can just walap it. ‘Bamboo Shell with Soy Sauce’ RM16.80

Mums (15)

When this was served, we were like, fuiyoh! So big..and very worry that…sei loh..how to finish so big, when the fan blow its aroma to us, we retune our worry and took the picture immediately as cant wait to taste it. After tasting it, thumbs up. Sweet mild yet spicy flavor is there, and I ended up keep taking a spoonful of curry and drink it like soup, eat along the white veggie. ‘Curry Fish Head’ *Market Price

Mums (16)

I do not like to eat Petai but this had change my taste wise on it. ‘Fried Prawns with Petai’ as the sambal fried on it, had make the petai taste very mild yet with come dry shrimp make it a bit salty and solid fresh prawns make it tasty. Something I enjoy too.

Mums (17)

‘Kam Hiong Fried Clamps’ is not bad too, with the amount cook in it, no complain.

Mums (18)

Tadaaaaaa…..The amazing cook, that make this all wonderful dish with her very own make over recipe is this very wonderful and friendly Grandma chef (as seen on the sign board) as she is a experience home cook and the family members thought that it would be a waste if only for own family to enjoy and they have converted the mom to the head chef now. Thanks to Ken for this invites and discovery in this urban ulu area again.

We enjoy the dish a lot and personally, I prefer this over Hot Wok. More strong in taste yet the price is quite reasonable. Definately I will revisit the place. Highly Recommended by me~
