On my recent visit to Melbourne, I visited one of a well known cafe known as Kettle Black and now in Penang have another similar version known as Black Kettle. By the name itself, it sure do bring up my expectation with a few fellow bloggers hype over it.

black kettle (1)

Upon walking in, I am certainly impress with their whole interior design which is quite posh, with natural sunlight at the middle seating area and with a wall of green walls behind certainly look very inviting. As you walk further back, it feels like you are walking to another zone, where it feels more like classy European dining area.

In this bakery cafe, it is also well known for their freshly baked French Bread.

black kettle (8)

On the look of it, it sure do look promising as its being display on a cute basket, however it is quite let down for them to use a clear plastic wrap around it and decided to pick two and give it a try.

Choices in the menu are pretty huge menu and could not show the other side as its corrupted.

black kettle (13)

Cafe Latte @ RM 10 is a pretty decent cup of coffee with mild acidic to my liking.

black kettle (14)

Tried two of their pastries with RM 3.50 each.

black kettle (15)

Egg Benedict @ RM 24 is one of a dish highly recommended by many including their own staff. Ovearall for Penang standard, I would say can be one of the best few in town as its filled with Sauteed Spinach, Smoked Salmon and a carefully poached Egg atop of soft and Brioche is done pretty alright and nicely top with slightly thick buttery Hollandaise sauce. Just that I have eaten better ones before.

black kettle (16)

At the price tag of RM 24 for a Ricotta Cheese Pancake is very steep for many people for such a portion. No doubt I would rate this is star of the dish as its elegantly and nicely presented yet pancake is cook to perfection, slightly crust on the outside and fluffy and soft inside. Top with variety ingredients such as seasonal berries, avocado, roasted nuts & honey butter.

black kettle (17)

Roasted Chicken Sandwich @ RM 26. Nothing to shout about.

black kettle (18)

Another highly recommended dish by many is this British origin, Rhubarb Crumble @ RM 8.50. Indeed Rhubarb is one of a favorite ingredients used by many Aussie cook, however for this version might be quite unique for me. This might be too dry for me or maybe best to recommend to go along with some recommended pairing from them.

black kettle (19)

I guess my expectation was built too high from a few reviews. With those price tag, certainly there are many better options available. However, its a great cafe with nice ambiance and friendly barista.

Awww, I must say I found my new love for dessert. I guess we have many trend going on and I believe homemade ice cream is the latest trend that alot of people are venturing into. With many prominent ice cream provider such as FortyLicks, InsideScoop and now with IDC Ice Dream Cafe had made it top in my list with their creative desserts worth to hunt for.

PA096637

Reading on other blogs, it seems that it is inspired by New Zealand’s Kapiti ice cream to create this brand out.

PA096639

Their interior is rather simple and after staring it for a while, it gives me the impression of a green house concept.

PA096640

A cozy seating home arrangement style at all the way to the back of the cafe.

PA096642

PA096665

I was told by one of the staff that everything is made fresh from their kitchen which they have plenty of unique flavours and its a clever flavour combination that they have done up. Not only that, the naming onto each ice cream is very creative too.

PA096667

Their menu is very straight forward but if you do read it carefully, it is very playful. It looks like they are ordinary scoops of the rich, creamy ice cream in an affogato, with waffles and crepes, or maybe classic sandwich, however they are not.

PA096668

PA096670

I always love to try my classic with waffles with one scoop of ice cream @ RM 16. A new found love of a perfect done up waffle. Love the perfect crust with slight crips to my liking, and there is a slight unique taste that definitely make it stood out compare with others out there and I top with one of their signature Ice cream for the day, Hokey Pokey which is honey inspired. (do note that their ice cream do change from time to time and this flavour might not be available)  Love the texture of ice cream which is smooth, slightly creamy yet burst with flavours. To pair with their coffee is rather interesting. Love the richness of arabica flavours that brings you back to classic kopitiam coffee taste bud yet a well balance of slight acidity at the end that balance it up and goes really well with my waffle and ice cream.

PA096679

If you think you have your taste bud tested, why not hunt after their playful Infused Affogato’s @ RM 12.  There are 7 flavours in total and I ordered mine with one of their signature which is Orange Zest. I must say the flavours are amazing, with a well balance of orange zest that brings you the freshness and mild sour end on your taste bud, yet their perfect affogato coffee flavour did not over power it yet my tongue can detect a nice balance of chocolate ice cream and great chocolate chip to bite after. IMPRESSIVE on how they did up the right balance of flavours for each layer.

PA096680

I was here to test 2 items and ended up it got me continue to order one of their super signature item which is

PA096686

Welsh Cakes @ RM 15 – Cranberry and lavender infused welsh cakes served with kapiti vintage Strawberry ice cream, topped with drizzled Honey and peppercorn sprinkles. Nothing much for me to elaborate as the flavours are amazing and left for me to say – a highly recommended item in the list.

PA096688

For a home grown brand, I am certainly impress with the creativity and quality of it. This outlet at the moment sits in my top 2 spot for best homemade ice cream .

If you ever craving for unique flavours of ice cream, this would be a highly recommended place for me.

IHOP initially stand for International House of Pancake which is quite a well known joint from California,US. Being quite establish in the market since 1958, they have gain its popularity among many local diners since its penetration into the UAE market since 3 years ago.

BOK_3838

BOK_3841

Ambiance & décor is pretty straight forward where in one glance you will felt its a comfortable family-friendly place with its menu concentrated on pancakes and waffles.

BOK_3842

BOK_3847

Being a Pancake House of course their specialty will be pancakes.

BOK_3848

BOK_3857

There is this flask sitting in nearly all the table. There is a reason for being there as it is empty. Upon ordering, it will be filled up and for this edition, its free flow.

BOK_3853

Coffee latte to kick start off with. Not too acidic yet just nice. Just too hot for me.

BOK_3855

At first I was very curious on the small little jug placement on the side and till I read it it’s a IHOP signature sauce. Among the 4,, Old Fashioned is my top favourite as its quite a classic maple syrup. Other syrups and sauces are available too for their savoury version.

BOK_3859

BOK_3860

Love their lemonade as its thirst quencher .

BOK_3861

This is our first day and my pair partner is Sean. We ordered quite alot for us to test on the food.
BOK_3873

To kick start for pancake stacks, we were advise to try on their classic original to see the differences of it. Indeed, its fluffy and bouncy and can be stayed at that condition for 30 minutes. Impressive.

BOK_3871

Next is this New York Cheeze Cake Pancake @ Dhs 42. Built with layers of cheese in between where you can get the sweetness of strawberry and the jam yet to pair with mild salty from cheese to balance it up. Just perfect.
BOK_3874

Something which is rather new to me is Chicken & Waffle @ Dhs 45. Never had this combo therefore could not really get into my brand. However, do eat it spate then will be pretty good, as the waffle can par with their own in house waffle.

BOK_3876

Next there is something quite unusual is the Breakfast Sampler @ AED 46. Love their hash brown series, as its more like a slices of potato being pan fried together. Serve with veal sausage and egg.

BOK_3878

When comes to omelette, this is not our ordinary omelettes as this Beef Bacon Temptation Omellete is serve pretty huge. Rich and punch with flavors of cheese yet its quite addictive, quite generous with its ingredients too. @ Dhs 46

BOK_3879

Next if you like something healthy, then Chicken Fajita Omellete. Its not a bad dish as you get the strong flavour of spinach and the cream cheese to balance it up.

BOK_3862

Move on next, we got ourselves a savoury crepe stuffed with scrambled eggs, spinach, Swiss cheese, mushrooms & onions, topped with hollandaise sauce and diced tomatoes is not bad. @ Dhs45

BOK_3880

Simply Stake Staker @ Dhs 44 is a food what we thought a disaster by its look turns out to be something impressive. Steak slices do look overcook however upon eating eat, the flavour of melted cheeze that cover with its meat yet cook to perfection is something that would could not ask for more.

BOK_3882

There is nothing to shout about for their Beef Burger @ Dhs44, since their pancakes and waffle have won our hearts over.

BOK_3888

Its a pleasure to meet Sean in person finally and I must say, if this hits Malaysia, other cafe with Panckes and Waffles do watch out. Its by far one of the best that I have come across.

I have always been a fan of Vietnamese food, as I had alot nice one when I was at oversea. Well, still nothing to be compared. When this shop open few years back, I have heard much good feedback from my ex colleague when they went to dine there with clients. One of the set back was, its a bit pricey to dine there then timing was right a while ago as they were doing promo and decided to stop by with a group of friends.

sao nam (1)

Sao Nam is easily located at LG of Empire Shopping Mall.

sao nam (2)

sao nam (5)

For a Vietnamese Food, they really offer quite a unique range of food compare to any other restaurant that I have been too.

sao nam (8)

Of course when you are in this shop, Prawn Spring Roll (6pcs) @ RM 18 its pretty classic item to order or one of the dish that represent Vietnamese food. Roll up pretty well with the sauce to dip along and prawn is fresh~

sao nam (9)

I am not sure I put this name on the correct picture or not as Banana Flower & Chicken @ RM 20 its one of a good appetizer to start off with. It was gone within seconds as it has a bit of sourish, and sweet end. Just perfect.

sao nam (10)

I read many review, this is one of a dish that highly recommended by many people and same goes to me. Mangosteen & Prawn Salad @ RM 32 is a very unique salad that I have come across, they used Mangosteen to pair it as we thought it was weird at first then, the flavour is sour with their special sauce make it very good to go along with the prawn.

sao nam (11)

Vietnamese Pancake @ RM 26

sao nam (12)

When this is serve, it looks and smells good but taste differently. Part of it is with the dressing that they have in there. I do not really like it but some of my friends love it.

sao nam (13)

Rice Rolls Lotus Leaf (6pcs) @ RM 21

sao nam (14)

sao nam (16)

If you are having rice and Lamb Curry @ Rm 34 is a must order. Thick in curry gravy with lamb cubes are cook till soft. A bit sweet and spicy and those of you do not like the taste of lamb do not order this. Its quite strong even you can smell it, according to my friend.

sao nam (17)

Chicken Lemongrass @ RM 20 is another dish that you can consider even ordering. The soup that cook along is fragrant with mild lemongrass taste that I would rate it like Steam Chinese Wine chicken but this is Vietnamese version.

sao nam (20)

Imperial Lotus Leaf Rice @ RM 18

sao nam (21)

Sweet Potato Leaves @ RM 12

sao nam (22)

Friend Tofu @ RM 22

sao nam (18)

sao nam (19)

In Vietnamaese Food, of course we must try out their Hue Beef Noodle Soup @ RM 18, soup is sweet with thin noodle and few beef slices to go along. Pretty good though.

No doubht that this place do provide nice Vietnamese Food, and if you are willing to pay a bit more, you can even consider this place for dining.

I remember when I came back from Hong Kong for holiday few years ago, and I was craving for Hong Kong desert after that, until I saw one of the outlet that started back in 1-Utama and from that moment the interior was very nice yet the desert was not impressive. Over the years, they have grown stronger and now, that they had a total of 6th outlet with the latest laid in the heart of Kuchai Lama.

My Honeymoon Desert is known for their using finest ingredient to make this Hong Kong Style Desert.

When I walked into the shop, I thought I walked to the wrong outlet as I didnt know they have redesign the whole concept and with this their latest outlet is one of their latest design to be more vibrant, cozy and more young and tredy which we really like the new look of it.

Trust me, you can just go empty stomach in this shop and flip through at this massive range of desert which I think offer more than 70 types of desert.

As I saw in the menu, the special tea section sure do caught my attention with its photo in it, then I ask the lady to recommend me what is special or what is her favourite then comes this ‘Only You Tea’ @ RM 4. When was served that time, we were very curious what is this bebola so special then the girl just smile and ask us wait patiently, few minutes later, the whole bebola like bloom with other flowery ingredient in it. . .Taste very refreshing, sweet and nice in aroma. . .

A stall that I have been eating since I was in high school that have never let me down till today. From their old stall till their new stall located at Super Tanker at Taman Lip Sin, Penang is one of the pancake stall that you must not miss or a place to visit. I have not been visiting this stall for very long time till my last trip back to Penang. Aki Pancake is  not and ordinary pancake consider  Chinese style (ban chang kueh, or apom pancake, or even dai kau min) which you can eat it every where, it is famous for its thick pancake base with special ingredient added in.

Aki (1)

The stall had been taken care by this lovely couple which are very friendly yet polite to all their customer. This had created a bond and many of the regulars had return including my brother which is a big fan of this stall.

Aki (3)

Aki (2)

This is what I mean no ordinary pancake stall that serve with normal peanut and corn base. They do have raisins, with seafood, chocolate and many other more. If you are adventurous enough, do try out all their signature. It will just amaze you.

Aki (6)

The ingredient he use are all the top quality that he could find to match on his signature item.

Aki (7)

One of my all time favourite is ‘Turkey Ham, Cheeze with Tuna’ @ RM 5.50. You will be amaze what this piece of pancake can do to you. Heavy damage. You might feel it is weird that this pancake is done in this way, but trust me! After start having the first piece you will never stop eating the 2nd, 3rd pieces.

Aki (8)

Always will order the traditional ones, ‘Lots of Peanut and Corn’ @ RM1.50

Aki (9)

Aki (12)

This is what I mean the damage of having the first piece and then many more to eat after that. They are very generous on the amount of ingredient added in. Every bite is mouthfull of ingredient. Damm! I am hungry now just by looking at this picture.

Aki (10)

Aki (11)

One of the best is not only on the ingredient, is the thickness of the dough or base of it is just perfect to accomodate the ingredient.

There are many more to try as I have tried 70% of their range before I start blogging and it was just most of the time I went to this stall without taking camera. Till now, I felt that its a real hidden gem in one of the residence area that MUST share with you food lover out there. It is a recommended stall by me.
