If you are in Taiwan, and you love street food or some street shopping and enjoy bargaining then, there is one place that you must not miss. It is not only famous to tourist but also locals, most of the time, this night market is sardine packed with people and if you do go there during their summer break or school holiday you can just expect to be push around. Shilin Market is one of the biggest and most famous night market in Taipei District. Easy access from public transportation that you can stop by at Shilin Night Market Station and the night market is located just opposite it.

shilin

This is one of the biggest junction that I have came accross. Lets start off with our very first food hunting. Please be aware that this post involves alot of food and drinks that might harm your eye sight and make a lil damage on your stomach.

shilin (2)

Fish ball and fried squid for that kind of size, guess how much you have to pay? Its chewy, very cripsy from the outside.

shilin (3)

shilin (4)

Then we got introduce that there is one of the best fried chicken among so many stalls in this area which is stall no 5+. Once you walked into this big food market you will see a long que and that would certainly be the fried chicken stall.

shilin (5)

shilin (6)

Nono and Jennifer were helping us to be in the line while we were busy taking pictures. It took us about 15 minutes wait because the people in the line just do not buy one, at least 3 pcs per pax.

shilin (7)

For such a huge piece of crispy fried chicken it cost only NT50

shilin (8)

After buy it, we were brought inside the food market and I got shock to see how many food stalls are there cramping in this area. So pack and so many food to see. That makes it more than 500 food stalls around this area itself which have not include the main shopping streets of Shilin streets there.

shilin (9)

We were brought to stall 441 which is recommended by Mary’s brother and his friend that this stall serve good Fried Oyster or ‘Oh Jian’

shilin (10)

Besides selling that, they also do have smelly/sticky taufu available in fried or spicy soup version.

shilin (11)

Spicy soup version.

shilin (12)

Fried version.

shilin (13)

Fried oyster here is certainly different from what we have in Malaysia but its something similar. Ours will taste abit jelly’ish but theirs is more on beaten egg that pours on top of the hot plate, fried and wraps it.

shilin (14)

The main difference is that they do add on sauce on top of the Fried Oyster. The sauce turns out to be good, spicy, smooth in texture with a bit of lime sour eat along with the smooth fried oyster is something I do not mind to have the whole plate alone.

shilin (15)

Oyster in there are moderate in size but for the price we are paying, we consider it cheap. One plate for around NT50 which have at least 6-7 oyster.

Back in the streets of Jalan Ipoh, I was introduce to this little shop located around the area that this Bak Kut Teh Restaurant Son In stall used to operate on a 3 wheel hawker cart back in 15 years ago, with many people drive from far just to eat this stall and used to wait for hours that operate from 11pm onwards. Now they have move into a shop that Ken highly recommend me this place if were looking for nice pork stew soy sauce with Bak Kut Teh along as he had been one of the loyal customers for many many years.

bkt

The shop might not be pack with people but what I was told by Ken that he had tried all the Bak Kut Teh shop in this road and by far this shop offer one of the best. This stall use traditional method of cooking by using herbs to cook along with the pork ribs unlike others use only cabbage, mushroom, bean curd and others.

bkt (2)

bkt (3)

One of their signature is the ‘Oily Rice’ that must not to be miss, very fragrance with pig oil yet eat along with Bak Kut Teh is just something you do not want to miss out. I ended up having 3 bowls of this.

bkt (4)

Then I order what they have and to start off with is ‘Bak Kut Teh’ Soup base with a mixture of all pork types and I love it with herbs taste on the soup base which is suits to my liking. The intestine and pork ribs all are soft, by dipping it with my mixture of dark soy sauce, chili and garlic is something I enjoy. This serve 1 pax.

I used to stay in Taman Paramount when I first came down to KL which is at my aunts place, I constantly dine at those 2 coffee shop for its cheap food and economy rice and I totally never knew there is one hidden Char Siew stall right behind at it which never mention by my aunt also. Ah Khai famous Char Siew Chicken Rice was not until one of my colleague went to ‘ta pau’ char siew for boss and client to eat for lunch, then she let us try out the char siew and its heavenly good. From there, we were talking about it how good it was and must go to the stall to eat.

**UPDATE: Ah Khai Char Siew NO LONGER OPERATE at SIMONS Delight as now had move a few shops up to RESTAURANT MEI YAN. . . .starting May 2011

ah kai

It was not until last week, we decided to hunt it down for this marvelous ‘Char Siew’ that located in Section 17 hidden inside Restaurant Simon’s Delights. We manage to reach there early as the time of operating business is from 11am-1pm. . . I just cannot imagine people doing business for just 3 hours a day. It must have been brisk business.

ah kai (2)

Seeing those ‘Char Siew’ hanging there is like waving at us to order it desperately making us place our order we a portion of char siew for 3 pax a plate for 3 plates.

ah kai (3)

One of the funny thing that I ask the owner, ‘Are you Local’ cuz while I was eating there and I kept figuring, is he local or not to do such a great char siew. . and his answer Yes… I am local just that I am not as white ask you guys that work in the office, since young I got burn infront of the stove by helping parents out that’s how I turn dark or ah bu neh neh. . . I can say, a very friendly guy that talk a lot of nonsense.

ah kai (5)

‘Roast Chicken’ is quite normal, nothing much to brag about. . .

ah kai (4)

The first place of ‘Char Siew is mix with Roast Pork’ that actually we wanted to try it out too, suprisingly it turn out to be good too, with the skin roasted well till it is crispy yet do not broke our teeth, with perfect thin layer of fats in between the lean meat and dip with the chili sauce is just perfect.

After I took picture of it, this plate of combo was gone in seconds . .  till all 3 plates that got serve just gone. .  We order another round of purely char siew only.

ah kai (6)

Pure ‘Char Siew’ was one of the best char siew I have ever come accross, with it well roast char siew till it was well quoted by caramelised with the burn end layer. . You can either chose 70% fats and 30% meat as we go ahead with equal fats and meat that spread out very well, till the bite in our mouth it melts as the meat is so soft and tender till it break into slices and the fats melts along with it. . . Every piece of it, is burst with flavor and that is how we ended up ordering another two more plates purely on char siew. If you love fats like my friend, go for the heavy weight more fats less meat..you will definately enjoy it!

At the end of the meal, the coffee shop were sardin pack with people ordering char siew and tapau, we even order a few take away back to office for tea time. Surely I am going back for more, we consider it quite cheap, with so many order and it is not more than RM10. Worth Recommending this place if you are a char siew lover~

Do go early to avoid dissapointment . . .

A recommended Char Siew place~

My best friend Desmond had organize a gathering for the past round. Many of us came with the same usual group that we used to hang out when I was working with my old company yet I am very happy that get to meet up with them again, miss the happy hour, the lepak time at office below and that was the past.

This round the chosen place is the newly open restaurant Ying Ker Lou at Pavilion which I their branch at The Curve is quite good.

Looking at the menu, I had a hard choice of choosing the food and the same with the rest tooas everything seems delicious and their decision is chin chai la..*faint

Some of us we do reach early as we enjoy our lovely conversation over a pot of tea which I like it very much with strong taste of tea is detected that can paint a layer over my tongue.

Finally, we had decided what to eat after looking at the people next to us and enjoying themselves.
We ordered ‘Hakka Pun Choi’ (as suddenly I forgot the english name) as this big pot can dine by 8-10 pax as there are around 8 of us as that would be the right choice.
Filled with Hakka mee, Prawns, porks, belly’s and chicken.

This was the end of the road after we could not finish it not because of its too big as its because its to ‘jelak’ already. It was not the right choice of us to go along for this dish. Most of us find it so so only yet most of us are not full too.

The best part is when comes to paying, our Chin Chai dinner cost us RM50 each for this dish and it was a total dissapointment for me to pay for such a dish. All of us learn our lesson.
