Traveling is fun and yet there a few types of travelers. Budget, luxury, adventurous and it ends up to which group of friend that you are traveling with. I have traveled to numerous location over past years and constantly I ended up as a planner for the group of friends that I am traveling with.

Start off with a simple trip up north with a group of friends like Penang, Most of us will turn into web portals to check out best location to stay, eat or hang out, even I have to understand the group of friends I am traveling with to cater onto the group characteristics. It is down to location of accommodations and also activities that they are intended to do on that trip. For a 2 nights accommodation, this is what I have come up with.

The Edision hotel (1)

To stay at The Edision Hotel which is one of the latest heritage boutique hotel that just open its door 2 months ago. Nice hotel and 5 star for its locality.

Penang (2)

As for the last night, some of them requested to look for budget place and I introduce them to House of Journey where it is indeed a budget hostel with great service. The place is run with some travelers who work as a volunteer to upkeep the place, a place where you get to meet travelers around the region. Comfort room and classic.

Penang (3)

To hunt for food, both locations are located strategically as it is only only 5-10 minutes walk away to hit onto famous street food that operates at night. One of them is Red Garden that is located right infront of The Edision Hotel.  Besides that, it is also located to a well known drinking joint that is popular to many backpackers is Antarabangsa where you get 3 cans of beer for RM 10. A place also known for getting to know travelers around the region.

Penang (4)

During the day, Penang is well known for its heritage zone which both accommodations are located at. You can rent bicycles to travel around as a lot attractions are just 10 minutes cycling away. Attractions will be such as 3-D Art museum, murals paintings and museums.

Penang (5)

Penang (6)

Looking for accommodations in a trip is also very equally important as it always depending on the travel group preference. I found some travel tips from Expedia Interactive Map where the sites suggest where to go places for your end destination.

I guess for the pass 6 months is the big buzz off Burger and Cafe. In KL we have quite a few famous one like MYBurger Lab or street Burger Kaw Kaw (which is now overrated) with different version of it. In Penang Island, Marshall’s Burger had been a hit for the past 6 months with them starting selling burger at the road side in Pulau Tikus area, opposite Belissa Row that you will not miss a long queue at night after 8pm, this would make them hold the title Penang Best Burger. Not only that, the best part is they sell pork too.

Marshall's Burger (1)

Few months down the road, now they have successuflly bring the brand to another level by operating in a shop lot at Burmah Road or next to Penang Plaza.

Marshall's Burger (2)

A shop that filled with simple decoration in a old building with wooden menu that place all their signature burger on the wall.

Marshall's Burger (3)

Sitting place in here is rather limited as I was highly advise by my best friend to head there early, and I was lucky that they do operate for lunch on Weekends. as for weekedays only at night.

Marshall's Burger (4)

Marshall's Burger (5)

Menu is rather straight forward with few choices to choose from or different meat.

Marshall's Burger (7)

People like me, sure will do add on’s

Marshall's Burger (8)

Onion rings are pretty good by frying to perfection that its crisp inside out with Marshall special sauce, its like a combination of bbq with light sour sauce, will pair very well with beer. .Ended up order another portion  RM 6.50

Marshall's Burger (9)

The Biscon with 2 beef patty, 2 cheddar cheeze and bacon@ RM 15.80

Marshall's Burger (12)

Classic Beef @ RM 8.90

Marshall's Burger (10)

For pork lover, you can opt for this .. The Boar that comes with 2 patty, 2 cheeze and bacon @ RM 16.50

Marshall's Burger (17)

Here is my special verison of burger as I order only The Bull – with 1 beef patty and cheddar and I add on with 1 pork patty @ RM 6

Marshall's Burger (13)

Then we deconstruct the beef patty . . .

Marshall's Burger (14)

Grill till the meat is just nice, not too dry yet not too solid as in between have slight airy feel. Just nice.

Marshall's Burger (18)

here is my pork patty and I find beef taste better.

Marshall's Burger (11)

Those who do not prefer beef or Pork you can go for chicken which is Bacon Special Chicken Thigh with a cheeze and patty @ RM 8.90

Marshall's Burger (15)

The burger is pretty good and their amazing signature is the sauce that makes the whole thing different. Only set back is the bread that  they are using, not so fluffy and its doesn’t taste fresh. Sauce is good and if they can intorduce another 1 or 2 more then its perfect.

For this kind of price, its definitely a great bargain, and will surely return again.

If in Penang its will be a top  notch place and good enough to satisfy your burger craving. Please do not compare to other joint in KL.

Marshall's Burger (19)

My friends are all a good fan of this brand.

Those of you who love steamboat surely will know this famous Famous Fish Head Steamboat, Zi Wei Yuen Restaurant (紫薇園魚頭火炭爐) at mainland Raja Uda, Penang or a very glory well known brand in the island itself is Goh Huat Seng in Kimberly Street. Eam Huat Teo Chew Fish Charcoal Steamboat is one of a addition in my list that you should not miss.

For this place, it is a recent discovery when I am back for Chinese New Year, my friend introduce me his uncle that also operate a charcoal steamboat in Penang island for the past 9 months that had create his own regular clientele is this Eam Huat Teo Chew Fish Charcoal Steamboat that located infront of Central Park Condo at Jelutong Market here. Since he said its so good that I must die die also come, then I arrange all my best buddy with 10 of us to come attack on it.

eam huat (2)

The location is not so hard to find as you just need to locate this corner shop kopitiam that house with many other hawker stalls in this Kedai Makanan & Minuman Labu opposite the Jelutong Market.

eam huat (1)

eam huat (3)

If you have not decide to dine in here, the menu and pricing are all smack on its stall itself.

eam huat (4)

When we flip thru the menu, we are quite surprise to see the pricing of this steamboat, its quite cheap and definately generous in ingredient. If you do not know what to order, go for their set.

eam huat (5)

Since there are 10 of us, we go for their biggest set which is the RM200 and add on some ala carte just incase not enough.

eam huat (6)

The pot that they are using, is very classic with golden pot that uses charcoal to heat up the soup. Anything with charcoal, I am surely up for it as the taste is always better.

eam huat (7)

Here are all the dish being ordered, one of their signature item is Homemade meatballs and Fook Chau homemade fish ball are very delicious and chewy

eam huat (8)

eam huat (10)

All hungry people already asking me to quickly snap on the pic.

eam huat (9)

This is the basic ingredient that given to us for a start as we have yet to add on any of the side dish we ordered yet. For a basic pot of soup, it comes with seaweed, deep fried bean curb, fish meat…and others. This Teo Chew steamboat is definitely different from the famous mainland as its not milky soup base, and the soup is very sweet by itself with fish meat and yam, we cannot imagine the amount of ingredients being used and hours to cook in it. All the seafood ingredient that being serve are fresh and good as the owner believe in serving fresh ingredient to his customer.

eam huat (11)

This is what happen when the pot got put down and with hungry people like them, the pot was clear within seconds, and we go on for 4 rounds. At the end of the night, every one is stuff and we could not even finish some of the ingredient.

eam huat (12)

At the end of the night, here is the cheeky boss that my friend keep pranking of him to get discount. As a result, we did not get any discount and our bill came about RM 250 with each person paying RM25 which is CHEAP for a steamboat quality like that.

Its good news for all of us that now we need not drive all the way to Raja Uda for a good steamboat, yet some of my friend prefer the famous Raja Uda steamboat, the difference is soup base quality. For me, I personally prefer this with less MSG detected as I do not drink as much water as I do compare to the other one. Certainly this falls into one of my recommended steamboat if you are craving for one, it wins because of pricing and quality.

There is no reservation allow as based on walk in only. Do note that their dinner time is pack with people and advise to go early.

An island up in the north, which is rich with heritage and famous for its food, who does not know this island Penang? Well, one thing cannot be denied that, after a few areas have got awarded as UNESCO heritage area. . tourism industry had push up to another level, with a mark on the map by knowing its one of heritage spot! Nostalgie Cafe

[UPdate: No Longer in Operation]

Nostalgie (1)

Good thing is this heritage area had attracted many tourist and many pre-wedding photoshoot had taken place with amazing work from many photographers along with many new cafe’s and boutique hotel bustling up around the area, one of the most recent place we found is this little family operate cafe, Nostalgie Cafe that stood alone in Steward Lane, which is just directly across Muntri Street.

Nostalgie (2)

All the operates in the area have their very own catchy name, not to be surprise that Nostalgie actually come by from French which evolve from the word Nostalgia with the meaning of yearning for the past. As this place is know with its rich heritage, therefore this word been chosen that preserve the whole building outlook and do with a bit more touch up to bring back the look and feel of the place.

Nostalgie (3)

Its like many cafe around the area and every cafe have their very own style preserving the whole building, and I must say this outlet is one of my favourite, as they did it with different style. A bit of art, antique which is a combination of east and west combination. Why is that so? Below is running operate cafe and upstairs is a boutique hotel which expected to be complete by Febuary 2012 and there are already people book the place. I got a chance to preview the place and its nice without completion yet. 😀

Back to my question, why is that so and with following pictures you will understand. . .

Nostalgie (4)

The cafe is operated with chinese antique where the family really put in efford and import it back from China on a certain furniture. .

Nostalgie (5)

This is the running cafe area . ..

Nostalgie (6)

and this is what I mean a touch from the West with classic art paintings been put up on the wall . .

Nostalgie (7)

Nostalgie (8)

Nostalgie (9)

Nostalgie (10)

A glimpse for the room upstairs .. . 😉

Nostalgie (11)

Nostalgie (12)

Right in the middle, they have a mini garden  . ..

Nostalgie (13)

Nostalgie (14)

and this is how people enjoying the place, a classic touch with a bit of simple contemporary design to make it very comfortable to chill for a morning. They are just a very friendly couple~

Nostalgie (15)

As the cafe are moving forward, soon to be they will have many drinks to be introduce into the menu which is coming soon~

Nostalgie (16)

On a hot sunny day, you would not want to miss this 2 drinks which is Ice Lemon Tea @ RM 5 & Cranberry Longan @ RM 9. Which is really a thirst quencher.

Nostalgie (17)

If you are a Lime drink lover, try not to miss this as not many places can serve nice Lime Juice drink and the colour and tone of the drink already tell, made fresh~

Nostalgie (19)

The menu is pretty simple as the have spaghetti, pizza and sandwich, the rest are drinks~ Food range are more like Italian homecook!

Nostalgie (23)

A simple dish to start off with Spaghetti Aglio Olio with Prawns @ RM 24, taste is light with olive oil and well coated along the spaghetti,  sprinkle upon some cheese powder on top that serve along with two huge prawns. . .

Nostalgie (21)

a meal that cook with their very own homemade sauce is Spaghetti Marinara with Prawns @ RM 24,   sourish in taste with the tomato sauce well coated on which is not too dry and by the time you finish the whole plate, there are little sauce that left on the plate that makes it look like you have lick it off~

Nostalgie (22)

Fettuccine Carbonara with Turkey Bacon @ RM 21, as not many people can take too creamy taste as that’s one of my favourite, a bit salty with bacon that cook along, and enough cream to make it as I prefer.

Nostalgie (24)

The star of the day is this Chicken and Feta Cheese Pizza @ RM 28, a home made base dough which you can see the chef roll in the kitchem that comes with the crust not too thick nor thin which is just perfect! Rich in feta cheeze taste and the flavor is a bit more strong, and a bit sourish with the cherry tomato that makes it blend so well. – Recommended!

Nostalgie (25)

A pizza which is generous with prawns is this Prawns and Chili Pizza @ RM30  that you can see each slice of pizza comes with decent size of prawns. This pizza bends towards more on sourish size because of its tomato base~

Nostalgie (26)

Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich @ RM 14

Nostalgie (27)

Sandwich lovers, you must not miss this with its fluffy homemade bread daily on a very limited bread available that once sold out, you have to come back the next day. I love the bread so much and the chicken is perfectly grill that make it a great sandwich to start your day off. – Recommended!

Nostalgie (28)

Under desert menu, this is the supper star or known as the cafe’s signature cake, Carrot Cake @ RM 12. This cake is also made fresh daily and one of the best seller in the outlet. Often get sold out over the day very fast, and some of the customers even come a few rounds for this cake. The cake is huge enough to feed for 2 person and if you are a cake lover like me, once slice is just perfecT! Its rich in ingredient, that every bite is filled with walnut and add on with a bit of raisins to sweeten it a bit. The cake is not too compact yet its a bit bouncy when you bite on it. A cake that I prefer, soft and not too sweet~

Nostalgie (29)

Chocolate Brownies with Walnuts are a bit on the bitter side because of the chocolate used, and some of you might not used to it. They are not dry, very moist and with chocolate sauce added on makes it even better. RM10

Nostalgie (30)

White Coffee @ RM 5 and Black Coffee @ RM 4

If you are coming to this outlet for dining, my recommendations is do not miss their pizza and sandwich, as their spaghetti taste are more towards authentic taste, therefore some people might find the taste a bit bland or sourish.

Its a good thing to see another cafe pop up around the area, one set back of this outlet is there are very limited parking space around the area, as you can park in the small lane oppsite the cafe or you have to park nearby area with just about 3 minutes walk by strolling down this rich heritage area`

Now they also have special Christmas Menu in da house check it out and make your reservations:

It was recently that, I have tried something new when I was back to Penang for holiday. Then my friend insist that I must try out this, and I did came to this place 2 times the stall did not open until the third time, it was there. Well, I have try out Satay Celup in Melaka, Lok Lok in Penang Island and for the first time, I went over to the mainland Bukit Mertajam area to hunt for food then I have come across, Lok lok in Rojak Style (that filled with prawn paste – heh kor) that if famous among the neighbourhood. My friend called this Chiam-Chiam Rojak.

This is the little stall that park right at the road side, nearby opposite a school and I am surprise to see this little stall flock with many people and it was drizzling still many people stand by it to eat.

Choices available are more like fruits, young mango, mengkuang, jambu air, cucumber and a few more.

The trick is, choose your favorite stick of fruits then just stuff the whole stick into this thick filled with lots of peanut rojak sauce that separate into two section, spicy and non spicy.

This is how it looks like after dipping into the sauce and I find that spicy is challenging, that first few sticks you do not feel the spiciness, but once it kicks in, your mouth will go numb a bit, yet still I keep dipping into the spicy sauce.

As the effect of it, of course your fruits will be fully coated with the rojak sauce, of course it will drip onto the floor like bird shit, what you have to do is. . . ..

spread your leg wide and shove your head out a bit like girrafe, so that it wont drip onto your shoe or shirt.

This is how good the business is, and many people stop by to make a take away of the sauce also.

If you are looking for something new to eat, as for me, this is something new that I was shown by my friend. Price is pretty cheap.

Remark: the stall doesnt have a fixed operation hours, so it depends on your luck!

Just right before I went back to Penang for my friends wedding 2 weeks ago, few days before that I received an email from my ex-colleague that some one mention in a blog that a blogger mention Pulau Aman served nice fresh Prawn Mee aka Mee Udang in Malay, then as I am excited and decided to go explore this round, and to double confirm I went Google up about this place, surprisingly quite a number of bloggers been before since as early as 2008. Then I told him I am going during Raya Break, then he said, u sot liau..Raya who opening for you including Ramadan? I was like super disappointed but yet lucky to go back early and just ngam ngam a day before bulan puasa start.

In adventurous mode, so went back to Penang can call my best friend and propose this and timing is so ngam that they also do plan to go to this island which is just perfect. Woke up early on Sunday morning look at Google Map that to travel there is very straight forward. Just head towards KL bound highway then exit at BATU KAWAN exit, –> find Batu Kawan Stadium then just head alllllll the way straight only till and turn left at a junction. It is just about 30-45 minutes from Penang island.

Pulau Aman (1)

Then you will reach this place with a huge carpark and we are amaze with one thing.

Pulau Aman (2)

Hidden deep inside here and a beautiful future mini port that just build up which I believe going to host some cafes or restaurant that over look the sea and Penang Bridge, shows that there are quite alot of crowds coming here.

Pulau Aman (3)

You can just park your car anywhere as you can find a spot and you will be charge RM5 which certainly alot more expensive compare to the ones in Penang if you consider this kind of place. . I guess its tourist attraction then.

Pulau Aman (4)

Then you will see this mini jetty that will take us to the opposite island which is known as Pulau Aman.

Pulau Aman (5)

This is the list of schedule and rates to take us over the other island as according to the boatman or the ‘penjaga’ there are no specific pick up or departure time. Just come to this jetty and just wait for the boat as they charge RM6 for 2 ways which is quite reasonable.

Note: the boat start as early as 8am (depends on luck as official start around 9am then last boat depart from the island back to the jetty is 5.30pm). IF you cant get back there are damm less accommodation and I would just wish you good luck in getting back.

Pulau Aman (6)

my 2 best friend which is the 2 siau poh’s . .Collen and Nancy and cam whore abit while waiting for our boat ride.

Pulau Aman (7)

Yayyy… finally our small mini wooden boat had is coming with the slow sound of engine ‘tutt ttuttt tutttt tutttttt’

Pulau Aman (8)

This is how small the boat is and maximum I think can transport around 25 pax.

Pulau Aman (9)

This is how small and low the boat is and I think I stretch my hand out I can touch the sea water already.

Pulau Aman (10)

This is what I mean small boat and quite a lot people purposely travel there for fishing.

Pulau Aman (11)

about 10 minutes slow boat ride we finally approaching Pulau Aman. Pulau Aman which is actually a small fishing village.

Pulau Aman (12)

Pulau Aman (13)

Pulau Aman (14)

Pulau Aman (15)

Pulau Aman (16)

We are surprise to see here got a map to tell us where we are and what do they have, and best of all, we do not know where the restaurant is located. The island seems small in this map and if to walk, will take quite a while. Then something struck our mind, just follow where everyone is going, you wont be wrong. Either ended up in 2 places, fishing area or the restaurant.

Pulau Aman (17)

this is what they have in the island for tourist attraction . . at this junction we took a turn on LEFT where everyone is walking.

Pulau Aman (18)

 they have road names tooo!

Pulau Aman (19)

See, I told you wont be wrong as its just a few steps a way from the Pulau Aman Jetty that you turn left at the T-junction then you will reach this RESTAURANT TERAPUNG PULAU AMAN.

Pulau Aman (20)

As I mention here is a fishing village and according to a few blogger you can grab mantis prawn and crab at a cheap rate. SO you choose what are the seafood you want then you bring the pale to the restaurant and let them know that you want them to help you cook.

Pulau Aman (21)

For being a virgin in this area, we do not know the rate of it and order Mantis Prawn and just 4 pcs cost us RM89 I was like .. kena chop already . . Then ask the other customer around there cuz I saw a big group of teenagers and ask how much is their price and a table sit next to us how much was theirs. Apparently there are 3 rates:

Small medium Size: RM50-RM60 per KG (recommended this size)

Medium Big Size : RM60-RM75 per KG

BIG SIZE : RM 85 above per KG

Please be remember to ASK the price and do not go on Sunday as very less boatman went out to sea to catch fish or anything,

Pulau Aman (22)

As many bloggers mention the signature dish here is Mee Udang, so that must not be miss and we order the rest of it. What is the different between Biasa (Normal) and special, as the difference is less prawns and more prawns. So I would advice just try on their BIASA can already.

Pulau Aman (23)

It was just 10.30am in the morning and its nearly full already.

Pulau Aman (24)

Here comes our order which is the signature dish of the restaurant known as Mee Udang / Prawn Mee malay version. I would say, the soup is not bad as you can taste from the sweetness from the fresh prawns and you just have to squeeze the lime to make it taste a bit sour. RM 6

Pulau Aman (28)

Pulau Aman (25)

Nasi Goreng Udang turns out to be quite good too, that many stores that I have tried in KL on the road side is not as good as this @ RM6

Pulau Aman (26)

Bihun Udang @ RM 6 that this plate certainly beats alot of malay stores out there which is quite fried quite fragrant.

Pulau Aman (27)

Mee Goreng Udang @ RM 6

Pulau Aman (29)

Koey Teow Soup Udang @ RM 6

Pulau Aman (30)

Our Giant mantis prawn and flower crab. The Auntie Charge ADDITONAL RM5 jus to steam on the seafood.

Pulau Aman (31)

Pulau Aman (32)

This is how giant our mantis prawn is and there is one even longer than Nancy’s face

Pulau Aman (33)

One of the reason not to order big mantis prawn is hard to peel the skin off as its shell is filled with a bit of torn and if you do not handle it properly while cutting you might hurt yourself. So the simple step for me that how I usually do it is

1) Cut the head off

2) cut all the legs

3) cut the side shell

4) just peel from the tail up to the front and just becarefull.

Pulau Aman (34)

After eating we had a short stroll to explore around what to see in this area and reliase that there is a Telaga Emas to see ( Gold Well) then walk for 10 minutes we find that its quite far and decided to turn around and also the area and the area is very Kampung and resides mostly malay here.

Pulau Aman (35)

Then I think there is a chalet here just 4 units. Then we head back to jetty and return. IF you ask me would I return, I would say yes, just for fun . . I will return again another round during Raya Week as the uncle said he will be opening.

What to order – Mee Udang and you can try out the Prawn Mantis small size.

Note: last boat is at 5.30pm
