penang street food

Meet the Penang legendary street burger at Hillside Uncle’s Burger located at Tanjung Tokong, Penang. This is one of a burger stall I have been eating since high school till now. One of a rare gem in Penang street food that you will find the only Chinese burger Stall in the island (correct me if I am wrong). Or Ramlee burger, Chinese version.

Hillside Uncle's Burger

The old couple have been running the stall easily more than 20 years.  Of course due to inflation price certainly increase and during this after pandemic period, the business is still brisk like the usual. Been ages since last had and I think easily the last I had was 15 years ago. Now, training his son up to take up spot. Certainly there is taste diff but practice makes perfect.

Be prepare to queue for 45 mins to 90 mins for a pippin hot burger. Usually I will buy to eat at the food court or eat at the playground. Then walk over to the Chinese shop next to 7-11 to grab a can of beer. Certainly Satisfying.

Hillside Uncle's Burger menu

Of course I will be ordering, Beef, Cheese and Egg @ RM 9

Hillside Uncle's Burger (5)

As the couple age, now they are pasing the baton to their son. Early session will be son training in progress to take over. When it hit easily after 4.30pm – 5pm the uncle will be in action. Do prepare to see his fast action as orders are pilling up.

Love they way how they cook the egg. still wobby juicy not fully cooked. The best way to pair with burger.

penang ramlee burger

Here is my juicy beef burger. Miss the flavors although there is the diff from his dad and son. Each bite is with satisfaction. Mix sourish, mild red onion spicy with their own special sauce , with hint of some sweetness, certainly hit the mark.

It is not easy to hunt good Penang Street food in KL, and thanks to pees like Vkeong and KY whom constantly hunt around for good food. No doubt that this Penang Jawa Mee in Restaurant Hoi Kee at Segambut is one of the place to eat for classic Penang Jawa Mee as the auntie whom is running it is also from Penang.

segambut mee jawa (6)

Currently this is one of my regular lunch place area as the office is nearby and most of the stalls over here serve pretty good hawker food. This stall signature is Penang Jawa Mee.

segambut mee jawa (7)

It is a must to top up with prawn fritters, lime, potato, slices of taufu and thick gravy in yellow noodle only. What is missing is only crushed chunky peanuts. Love it as the gravy is thick and fragrant. The consistency of food is there as I dine at least once or twice a week over here.  @ RM 6.50

there are others stalls too whenever the lady is not open. I tried curry noodle.

segambut mee jawa (3)

It is not too bad for the colour and texture of it. I would not complain much. Just for lunch, it is decent enough to fill up the tummy.

I have also tried others stalls such as, Ulu Yam Loh mee, TOmyum Noodle, is another stall that you can hunt it.

Pan Mee is also crowd favourites here but I find it so so only and Char Koey Teow is mehhh but business is good.

If you are short on time in Penang or just on touch and go trip in Penang yet still want to hit your stomach with all the good street food. Gurney Drive Hawker Center is one of the options where I usually recommend my friend. Although some of you might find it commercialize but still there are certain stalls which is still quite good.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre (6)

In this hawker center, there are plenty of stalls for you to hit on as every stall have their own set of customers as their flavours are different from each other. there are quite repetitive stall as what I mean is that you can find 3 laksa stall, 3 prawn noodle stall and so on.

Besides that, one good selling point in this food court as it is a good balance of Chinese and local malay food too.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre (5)

Grill cuttle fish is one of my favourte as each stall have their own special sauce to dip along. some are better and stronger in taste and some are milder.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre (7)

Fried oyster remain one of the top order list for many food hunter.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre (8)

this is one of my favourite Soya Bean Stall.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre (9)

Not the best but still remain one of the item that I would buy when I crave for it. Chinese Pancake with available flavour of corn or banana as they add in fresh banana slices.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre (18)

Otak otak in this stall is pretty darn good. Penang Otak otak is quite different from Muar as Penang version is steam along with a huge piece of fish in the center. Depending on the stall recipe.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre (19)

One of the classic dishes which is Cuttle fish or known as Sotong Kangkung or in Penang known as “Ju hu Eng Chai”.

Lets head to be back section which is the Halal section. You can get all the local malay cuisine. You have to be cautious while taking your ingredient in Pasembur stall in Gurney as they are well known for Cut Throat pricing. Best to ask individual item if it is not written. Usually if you take seafood, that is where the samurai sword is out.

This Satay stall is pretty good which usually I order.

I guess for the past 4 months, anything related to cheese is a crazy big hype. It is the same as when I was at Penang past 2 weeks and decided to make a visit to this new crazy hype or we all known as our classic street burger or ramlee burger in Penang is now evolve to another level. Street Grill Burger Bakar that is located at Sungai Pinang, Penang is a classic burger bakar version that is infuse with chese! Only operating for about 2 months and the hype is over the roof.

Street Grill (16)

From a dead zone to alive as you can see tons of people are queueing up as early as 5pm where the stall start operating around 6pm. Not only that, average waiting time now is 60-90 minutes which is pretty crazy!

Grilling of meat starts at 6pm and takes about 30 minutes to get ready the first set before ordering. When I was there, first ordering starts at 6.30pm . Means the first few guys had queued about 60-90 minutes. The line gets even longer when I left about 7pm.

Street Grill (4)

Simple single burger bakar starts from RM 6.50 and they do have mutton which is also one of their signature. The best of all is to add on their #meltedCheeseMeleleh at RM 2.

I ended up did not buy the burger to eat as the waiting time was too long whereby I arrive at 6.15pm and I am like the no.20th. What I understand from my friends where it is a mix reaction. Nothing special to go queue for 60-90 minutes. Some say it is awesome!

Honestly to me it looks pretty normal. But well, shall let you guys go try it out and let me know is it worth the time and what is the verdict!

Any hawker food from Penang it seems will be favourite to many. As for now, most of the travellers now can get good Penang food in Klang where Angcle Peoh one of the siblings from famous Penang Ayer Itam Laksa as now he have move down to venture new market.

Klang is their new target as where they find similar home feelings like Penang as most of them speak Hokkien.

pg food (1)

Of course their signature would be their all time crowd favrouite – Penang Laksa which is filled with alot of mince fish meat and also slices. Pungent in flavour, sourish enough and just perfect.

pg food (11)

To me the flavour offered in Angcle Peoh is slightly different as their flavour taste for other items are more towards Penang, Mainland (in my own opinion)

pg food (12)

If you visit here during 11am-2pm do expect huge crowd as the crowd constanly pouring in non stop and to get the shop less crowd, ideal time to come is 2.30-5pm . . They have two seating area which is outside and indoor with air con.

Some combination of mural in Penang.
