After much anticipation from the first food hunt trail Hennessy X.O with Chef Micheal Han at the beginning of the month (click here), I was counting days to this much finale event. Keep wondering for the past 3 weeks how is the chef gonna deconstruct our Penang street food. As last round we get to know that the chef is amaze with some of the dishes especially the oh,chien. On my thought, it just would not jive along what is going to be serve tonight.

All of us are here again, truly honour to be invited again by both G2 and MHD to this exclusive event. Tonight we will be dining along with Chef creation on how he had deconstruct all our beloved Penang food to another level to pair along with Hennessy X.O.

Hennessy (1)

As we were ask to gather around lobby at 7.30pm and guess what? Infront of G-Hotel, we were ferry by trishaws to our dinner location and its just another great level of experience that so many security blocking the road and all the trishaw uncle paddling their way there thru busy traffic in Gurney Drive.

Hennessy (2)

Just right about 2 blocks away we had reach our dinner destination St Joseph’s Novitiate, a heritage building that had restore and being center of lime light under new construction Gurney Paragon.

Hennessy (3)

I am amazed that they had transform the whole place into Hennessy X.O stuff with red carpet being roll out. For the first time felt like VIP. 😀

Hennessy (4)

As right after registration, we were usher up to this wooden stair case that lit along with candles like, follow the light, you wont be lost.

Hennessy (5)

Right at the entrance I saw Will Quah, of course will be the official Emcee for the night.

Hennessy (6)

Time is still pretty early, and as early as 7.30pm we are all enjoying our glass of Hennessy X.O already.

Hennessy (7)

Select your drinks sir, would you like it to be – neat, on the rocks, or with water

Hennessy (9)

They will be moving around to ensure that your glass doesnt run dry.

Hennessy (8)

I further venture around then there is this quartet serenades guests upon arrival. It reminds me of all those rich doing a high end charity like what you seen in the Hollywood movie with us chatting around and enjoying the soft music background.

Hennessy (10)

Just love this area, its cozy, fitted with dark comfy sofa and just plunge yourself onto it will stuck there for a while.

Hennessy (11)

upon drinking on my glass, I starred at the glass momentarily then only I realise the uniqueness of the glass, right at the bottom there is all the wordings. Love mine with little water and a cube of ice to just make it slightly chill.

Hennessy (12)

With yeng kor Cheng Yi – Fatboybakes, leng chai Robert from G2, Anna – annna.net and me

Hennessy (13)

As the time hit, we were ask to enter to the dining hall and my oh my, it instantly reminds me of Harry Potter movie dinning scene. With long tables that every one is seated and I thought, if every one in classic dressing like Harry Potter movie then it will be super cool. Nevertheless the most important is, the presence of Hennessy X.O drink with us all night long. 😀

Hennessy (14)

Found my seating and greeted with a cool folded napkins in tuxedo style along with menu being clip in between..

Hennessy (15)

Everyone is just so busy taking pictures along with cameras exchanging here and there.

Hennessy (18)

This is what happen when camera are being exchange as I also do want to be in the picture. I do not have the tux so I borrowed it to look smart.

Hennessy (16)

The whole event started off with Will Quah introducing and welcoming all of us.

Hennessy (17)

A glimpse on Chef Han to those who have not seen him in person.

Hennessy (19)

Menu for the night, it blows me away as what we sampling around on early month, it came out 90%. What a great challenge for the chef and just cant wait to get a bit on all those wonderful creation.

Hennessy (20)

Hennessy (21)

We set sail on our first dish of the night. Pie Tee – Chutoro and Ginger

Hennessy (22)

It was presented on a huge cube of wood standing tall is this 2 pai tee that does not look much different from our local scene and one thing for sure, ingredient inside looks solid. Blends of eggs with fatty tuna mix with herbed mayonnaise, tarragon, parsley, chives and chervil, taste is light and I pop the whole thing in one mouth bite, then end with sip of Hennessy. Blends well in my thought.

Hennessy (23)

Then every one started to chat about the dish, what do you think? Its like good, and lets continue to drink!

Hennessy (24)

Then I manage to peek into the kitchen, that chef and his team are so busy preparing our second dish.

Hennessy (25)

Here comes our Penang famous Rojak –  Violets and Carambola Flowers

Hennessy (26)

Being deconstructed in a way that its too pretty to be eaten. Colorful to my eyes and start to wonder what is those mini roll. It is a mixture of fruits and vegetable, being cut finely then curl along with straws to make the size even. Add on with prawn paste, end with sprinkles of crunchy peanut, garnish along with edible flowers. Each plate are being serve with 30 cylinders. Every roll is crunchy and ‘heh kor’ is not too strong, just light enough to pair along with the vegetable and fruits. I find it goes better with neat rather than with some water.

Hennessy (27)

Halfway thru our dinner, we were greeted with this amazing voice that most of us turn our attention to her. Soft sweet voice that sings all classic songs with a few piece of classical instruments is the right blend that had been missing out.

Hennessy (28)

As my attention was to that sweet voice but huge bowl and good expression by Ciki pull me back to my food. Next up on our table is Assam Laksa.  Two plump seared  scallops from Froya, garnished with herbs, and the most unique part of all is a 50ml bottle of stock in a medicine bottle. In first sight I thought what is that bottle all about that looks like cough syrup. Then we were told by the chef its actually the soup to be add on.

Hennessy (29)

Just on my own thought, – how did the chef come out with all this idea. Just one of its kind on how to present Laksa in different level. The soup on the bottle is serve in room temperature as if its pippin hot we wont be able to hold it. If its served cold, the taste will not be perfect therefore room temperature was the perfect combination

Hennessy (30)

After pouring all the soup, and the strong smell of the soup just float into the air, smells as good as the original laksa.

Hennessy (31)

Putting first sip of soup base by tasting it, I pause for a while same to the rest, is the soup cold? Well, room temperature as we totally forgot about it whereby we are so used in eating laksa with its soup pippin hot. It would even taste better if the soup is warm, yet if the soup saltiness slightly tone down then its perfect. Never the less, the scallop is amazingly juicy, soft  and huge.

Hennessy (32)

Laksa turns out to be my favorite dish of the night as many commented its too salty yet I still like it as it pairs well with my neat Hennessy X.O

Hennessy (33)

Then Karen with the rest of MHD team members share their delights on how the whole process of engagement and how all of us enjoy the food.

Hennessy (34)

We will never stop take pictures when alcohol keep flowing down . .:D

Hennessy (35)

Or Chien – with Duck Eggs and Smoked Oil.

Hennessy (36)

pre cooked in buttermilk, adding to its creamy texture, deep fried Panko (Japanese bread crumbs), to add onto that crispy texture, chives and the edible kelp, Kombu are place on top. Right after Anna finish this oyster, she starred at mine as I am still busy taking pictures of this then  I have to place both hands protecting it from being stolen.

I put the whole oyster in and only understand why she stared at the oyster.

Hennessy (37)

Hokkien Mee – Sakura Ebi and XO Sauce.

Hennessy (38)

Noodle was soft as the main ingredients in it is sakura ebi that I try to eat every bite with it that create a slight saltiness yet spicy just that its too oily.

Hennessy (39)

When I saw the menu he have Nasi Kandar cook, I was totally amaze and really looking forward to it as our last food hunt with chef, he also fell inlove with the taste of spices. Amazingly, it took chef 3 days to marinate along with rendance saunce onto this awesome piece of  Wagyu Cheeks, Onions and Ash.

Hennessy (40)

The tenderness and softness  of the wagyu cannot be describe as I found myself eating for the first time a meat that being marinate for 3 days. Apparently all this process have to be done in Singapore then air flew in as some of the ingredients he wants are unable to be located

Hennessy (41)

ABC @ Horseradish, Hibiscus and Rose Hips

Hennessy (42)

Ice Kacang turns out to be a whole new experience to be that condiments, such as rose hip, horseradish, and hibiscus will be a unique combination to me.

Hennessy (43)

Right at the end of the dinner, Chef Micheal Han and team came out and I must say what a amazing experience that you have give to us. Really out of our imagination on the ingredients that you use that manage to pull it near to our favourite Penang street food yet to prepare dishes for so many guess on the night its absolutely amazing.

Next day, we were then gathered for a Q&A Session with Chef and Karen Marketing Director of Moët Hennessy Diageo Malaysia. Dinner for appreciation Grows are meant to be injected with new ideas, concepts and venue is one of a important factor for all their exclusive dining. By choosing some one who can relate onto their brand is a challenge yet cannot deny that, scouting chef talent is one of their expertise that Chef Micheal Han really able to come out with all the food into a new dimension. Its truly a new dining experience to me as the previous dinner on Hennessy X.O Appreciation night with Chef Edward Lee is totally different.

I am already looking forward for next installment. Can’t wait.

About nearly 10 years ago when I was studying at Taylor college, one of the stalls that really keep us curious which is this stall called Rojak SS15 that opens its stall after 2pm which located in front of Shell station and when its business start, many people will start queuing to buy Rojak till we decided to join the crowd. As me and my friend are from Penang, one thing that got me and my friend confuse was there wordings, in Penang, Rojak means the food are add on with the shrimp paste not this version, that this version in Penang would be called ‘Pasembor’. Apparently they are one of the Famous Rojak at SS15.

Till last weekend when I was around the area, and I saw how come this stall so many people queuing up for the food only till I realize that it was the Rojak stall which previously located infront of Shell Station and now they have been relocate to this mini area next to Subang Square.

rojak ss15

Now they have several stalls together with one of the Indian stalls that sell there, we feel that they serve like really traditional Indian ‘kuih’ that just came out from the hot wok.

rojak ss15 (2)

rojak ss15 (3)

This is called ‘Vadai’ as the lady sell it very cheap. It taste something like donut, instead being sweet, its abit salty and spicy yet with indian herbs taste.

rojak ss15 (4)

Next is this  masalodeh which I rate it as a type of biscuits. It doesnt taste something like Famous-Amos but similiar as the above just that its crunchy.

rojak ss15 (5)

rojak ss15 (6)

Next to that indian stall, locate this stall which sells drinks, with their availability of Cendul, ABC, coconut drink in this hot weather is surely something hard to resist. Only then I remember that this stall used to stay by the side of the Rojak at the petrol station and now they have move in together.

When comes to public holiday or long weekend, this is the place that we locals Penang will try to avoid. First we will stuck in the jam. Second if we do go, its hard to find a parking spot. Third, if manage to find a parking spot its you have to fight for tables with all the local tourist crowd.
Gurney Hawker center actually had emerge as one of the hottest tourist spot for local Penang Hawker Food. You can get all the Penang favourites, Laksa, Char Koey Teow, Prawn Mee, Rojak and many more all in one area. With its open air concept and crowded area is what the ambiance that most tourist is looking for.
Last weekend which is Christmas weekend I was back to hometown and went to hunt my missing ‘Ma Zhi which I pronounce as Muar Chee very much.

This is the Muar Chi stall which is located in the middle court area (middle location) next to the famous Char Koey Teow.

Busy preparing customer order and I have to wait mine.

Tadaaaa….my fav muar chi. Its warm and soft covered with smooth blended peanut sand crush top with fried onion is something I enjoy eating and I order it big just for myself RM2.

Next Rojak’ of course in my list and by being one of my favourite rojak stall this is one the chosen beside GP Soon stall did not open and the one my all time favourite Macallum Street that added dry shrimps and peanuts..

Love my rojak to be a lil spicy and that is how he stir and stir.

and again tAdaaa……. my Rojak without cucumber and added meng kuang. Yummm….RM 5.
Again, this weekend I am going back to Penang for my cousins wedding and of course this place will sure be a disaster place again that is going to be pack with local and foreign tourist. For tourist, this place is a must go place to eat and visit. You will enjoy the atmosphere there. You will not get the best food here but just a great spot to be.

My first try on Vietnamese food was during my college time where there is one quite famous Vietnamese restaurant at Taipan, USJ which is called Vietnam Kitchen. Went to this restaurant quite frequent and I love their soursop drink a lot! Wondering is the restaurant still there and is the quality still the same? Till my very last exposure which I had a satisfying meal was at Pho Hoa months back.

Then recently got a chance to try out their food again, but this round I try out their food at the very wrong time which during 9th God festival which I am on vegetarian. Then my friends they request the kitchen to do vegetarian for me. I plan to go sit and migle around mana tau kena makan.

Drinks to start of with ‘Vietnamese Dripping Coffee’ and if you are looking forward to be caffeinated then this is a good drink to go after. RM5.95

Something thick and creamy yet not that sweet ‘Blended Fresh Avocado Juice’ not my type of drink but still alright. RM7.95

I cannot remember what is the last drink called but I love it, gassy, yet a bit diluted feel but with asam that pulls in the taste of it.

All of us waiting patiently for our food to come and been explain by a friendly host. He is really a great guy.

As I remember when I was studying in Melb I used to hate this a lot because of the vegetable ingredient that they use and my housemate used to ta pau a lot back because he work in a restaurant till my Vietnamese friend teach me how to enjoy it and now it had become one of my favourite.

‘Summer Roll Shrimp, Chicken, Salad & Rice Vermicelli’ RM3.95 per roll as it was wrap solid as it is and you must dip it with the dipping sauce(taste something like, ‘Shrimp paste/penang rojak paste’) to make it very flavourful. Mine this round was pure vegetarian roll. Still as good as it is.

We had a mini version of the appetizer is for food tasting purpose making sure we enjoy most of it.

Lemon Grass Chicken @RM7.95 per plate of 4 sticks
Fried Roll @RM3.25 per roll
Sugar Cane Prawn @RM7.95 per plate of 4 sticks

As this round me on vegetarian,so got no chance to try out but only to see and swallow my saliva but based on my previous food outing, the sugar cane prawn was grill and very aromatic.

When it comes to Vietnam food, beef is always their signature. It would be best to eat with beef as ‘Beef Pho with combination of Steak, Brisket, Flank, Tendon and Tripe’ @RM16.95 which is my all time favourite that all the lembu spare parts are in there. The soup base is clear and sweet as it taste like the parts had been cook along in it for hours.

As today I am hunting for healthy food concept, the next serving would be ‘Vermicelli with Veggie and Grilled Chicken’(mine without the chicken) RM12.95. To best eat it is to pour the gravy in, and mix it around like rojak then you eat. Something light and healty which fill in your taste bud with a bit of sour, sweet and clear feeling for you. The chicken meat is to pull up the taste of the veggie which goes along very well with it as what I have been told.

My vegetarian version.

I love my fried taufu very much as it is, fried to perfection to my likings that the outer layer is a bit solid crust crispy and the inside is soft and hot yet the show the taufu with the Vietnamese sauce is just heavenly.

Besides that, they do have ‘Seafood Noodle Soup’ as I did not try out this one, so cant really comment much on this.

Lastly, we got serve with ‘Net Spring Roll with Ice Cream’, a simple ice cream with fried yam that taste very yammmy which makes a perfect couple. RM5.95.

When comes to Vietnam Food, certainly this is in my list to recommend.

Thanks to Richard for organizing and thanks to Sidney for inviting. My last review on the shop, click here

Last weekend were shopping around then thought of eating Penang food and always go to Little Penang Café, then I just remembered on whose blog that I have read, giving good review on this restaurant, so fast fast ask them change place to Gurney Drive.

When I reached there, I am quite surprise to see the crowd as it is not many. Can count with your 5 fingers but then what the heck, just trust that person’s taste. Never try never know!

They also bring in the ‘Beca’ to add in more feel on it.

This is what I mean, seriously not many people. The were like only 4-6 stalls operating ~

Just love the cover of the menu. Take closed up, makes you feel like you are row row row your boat.
Then the manager came by to greet us and also to take up our order. The best part is, he also know how to speak HOKKIEN. Kaki lang ah~ friendly person~
As usual, drink order first, so I decided to order the special promo drink of the day. ‘Barley Ice’ RM 1 (usual price RM3.80). Just by looking at it is just a mere normal bali ais loh~ but when I get to drink it that time, I am just falling in love with the drink. Not sweet, rich with barley taste which I like it thick compare the one offer in the kopitiam which is quite diluted or sweet. Highly Recommend!

Penang food, which one of the famous food to crave for is ‘Penang Rojak’. The ‘Hae Ko’ just feel that it is lacking of some taste. Although the paste is quite sticky and thick but couldn’t tell what is it missing to make the extra umph in it~RM8.80

This ‘Loh Bak Set Big’ was this highly recommended by a blogger(which I forgot whom). The har peng is goring to crispy, which is very nice, loh bak – is rich with filling, when you even pick it up the compactness of the meat wouldn’t fall off easily. Goreng perfectly which doesn’t makes the skin over goring. Taufu and egg noting much to comment about as it taste normal. With the price RM16 which I thought pretty expensive, but turn out to be reasonable with the quality they are serving.

Usual hawker food which normally ppl wont miss is the ‘Char Koey Teow’. I was abit disappointed when it got served because of the portion. I said, fine dining meh~…plate so big, portion so small, then my friend kacau me, want me to take soy sauce and sambal to help you conteng to look more perfect boh… ??

But after trying out, you will be surprise of the taste. It was fried to perfect, with the wok hei is there, quite dry and spiciness lvl just ngam.. We had not enough of it. Just finish within seconds. Highly Recommended! RM8.80

As I always never miss one of my favourite ‘Curry Mee’, before with the chili paste was put in, the taste of the soup is pretty pale, and santan taste is just abit.

After putting in a spoonful of chili paste, the whole bowl had turn to fiery red and it is not even spicy at all, just the colour but the taste had changed. It taste much better but still not the best. RM 8.80

Next item not to be miss ‘Hokkien Mee’. The soup is quite rich in taste which is the most important thing in prawn mee. They gave generous amount of mee and bee hoon. It also comes with a few big pieces of prawns. With the charges of RM8.80 is pretty decent.

One of Penang signature is ‘Penang Laksa’. Turns out to be not the best of all. The soup is quite clear, not rich in taste and fish chunks or fish blended that mix in the soup. It wasn’t serve very warm. By adding in prawn paste just makes it taste weirder. Charging at RM8.80

When comes to Penang desert, ‘Ice Kacang’ would consider as one of the item must try out or order. In this restaurant, I would say just thumbs up for this. We seriously enjoy salivating it. Hard to come across a nice ice kacang which the most important is the ice was blended very soft. Perfectly on it. Overall, wasnt too sweet on it, just a great desert to close the meal with. Highly Recommended RM3.80 ONLY.
Next would be the ‘Teow Chew Cendol’. Again, the ice is soft, the gula melaka is not too sweet or they have just put the right amount on it and the santan feels like eating fresh. The coconut taste is there. I would just say, gone within 60 seconds. Also charge at RM 3.80
Overall, we are very satisfied with the food that they offer here which I feel it taste much better compare to Little Penang Cafe. Was just wondering after that, why the food is so nice, yet the ppl is so little. The pricing which I find it reasonable with the quality of food they are serving. Would surely come for second round.
Remarks:
Just feel that, they don have a QC in Char Koey Teow which we order the second plate, it doesnt taste nice at all compare to the first plate and also the amout of time we have waited is more than 20 minutes which we believe we are the only table ordering extra. Maybe the chef go and tangkap si ham.

Came to this place to dine because the owner of the Kopitiam is my friend’s friend. So she came here to pay a visit. There are 2 coffee shop at this junction. 1 corner each.

While I was waiting for my food to arrive then I spotted this stall which is called ‘RoyalRojak which quite alot of people buying from them. It is prepare by 2 kids. So I decided to give it a go. Surprisingly it did not disappoint me. The colour looks good and ready to be hantam. The ingredient in there was very very generous or either they boy did wrong for me, as the cuttlefish in there is alot. I mean there were like about 8slices and not the mini 1..it is a big 1 and I paid only RM4.80 for this which gave me a shock. I rate this as poison. Once start it never want to stop. We did ta pau back another packed to let the rest of them try. Highly Recommended
Food rating 10/10 , Veli Veli Good~

The next order came by was the ‘Chicken Rice with Roast Pork’ added. The taste of it is not bad but would not be my choice if I were to order there. RM 4.80 also.

Food rating 5/10 , Okay Nia~

This was recommend by the shop owner ‘Jar Jiang Mien’ which he rated very spicy till mouth blow fire and by listening to him I just ordered. The first taste in my mouth after putting in the chili I was like har..spicy? Not even a taste of spicy. Only realise that the shop owner cannot even take some spicy’ness. I was like haih..The taste of it so so only la. If it is spicy a bit more would taste good. RM4.80 for this also.

Food rating 5/10 , Okay Nia~

‘Pan Mee is another friend’s order. It is nicer compare to the other 2. The soup was well boiled with some ingredient and the taste of it is nice till 2 of us keep picking on this food. RM4.50 for this.

Food rating 6.5/10 , Okay ah..Not Bad~
