Who loves pizza? It is quite hard to find a nice pizza place. My favourite is a kopitiam pizza stall in Penang known as Frankie Pizza. However, my best friend whom she stay above the place told me I must come try this newly open pizza place known as Pizza Mansion at Happy Mansion Section 17.

Pizza Mansion (1)

Hence, upon writting this post, it had been my third visit over past 2 months. Why this place is pretty good as the dough is made fresh and they use wood oven to baked the pizza. Interior is indeed very simple and nice. Love the simple ambiance.

Pizza Mansion (2)

A place that is not huge, but enough to cater some groups of people. There is no reservation and what you need to do is to be there early. Once it is full, there is a little note pad hanging right at the door area, write your name and just lepak around the corner.

Pizza Mansion (3)

Pizza Mansion (4)

It is a very simple menu.

Pizza Mansion (9)

There are 2 item is a must in my list. One is this Baby Garlic Pizza @ RM 5. Simple. soft and fluffy pizza bread and pack with flavour. WE usually have one each before the pizza arrive. Just a slight inconsisancy as we found out different baker at the counter comes out with different taste.

Pizza Mansion (5)

This is another 2nd item that must have – Truffle Mac & Cheese @ RM 20 – Macaroni, Granda padano, mozzarella, gauda, aged cheddar and truffle. Baked to perfection as the cheese just melt on the top with a slight burnt on the top of the cheese and maraconi. Perfect!

Pizza Mansion (7)

Pineapple Express @ RM 30 – Slow roast pineapple, smoked duck slices, chopped jalapeno, tomato sauce and Mozzarella.

Pizza Mansion (8)

Holy Paperoni @ RM 30 – tomato sauce, cured spicy beef, fresh onion ring, Fior di latte, aged parameson and oregano.

Pizza Mansion (10)

Smokey Robinson @ RM 35 – Smoked salmon, onion ring, capers, fresh dill, spring cream, sour cream and basil oil. Among those few, this flavour is my least favourite. I still prefer those classic flavours.

Pizza Mansion (11)

Most of the pizza are pretty good. Currently emerge as one of my favourite pizza place. However do note that there are slight inconsistency, however I think still a recommended place by me.. might be one of a best pizza in pj happy mansion.

Hidden Bar or Speakseasy bar in KL is one of a booming industry over the past 2 years. Mrs Jones Parlour at Section 17 is one of the latest addition that puts itself as one of a hidden Gin bar in PJ.

Mrs Jones 20 (9)

Mrs Jones (2)

Quirky and simple as the interior will transport you back to the 1980’s classic grandma house interior. Worn titles on the wall, classic paintings, rattan chairs, portraits and black and white colour tv box is indeed one of a perfect space for instagram if you do visit here in the afternoon.

Mrs Jones (3)

Mrs Jones (4)

Mrs Jones (5)

The bar sited just right at the back walkway. To make it more interesting, each of the snacks are carefully paired by the mixologist. You can opt for the snacks pairing if you keen to try it out.

Mrs Jones (8)

Cheesy Beef Wrap @ RM 25 with house red wine – Embers Cabernet Sauvignon

Mrs Jones (9)

Mexican Hot Shrimp @ RM 29 pair with Sloe Gin on the Rock . This is quite a unique gin and never knew that gin can be drank on the rock. Slightly sweet that gives you a nice hint of floral taste.

Mrs Jones (10)

Chinese Tea Egg @ RM 8 is one of my favourite as love the herb taste of it and it goes well with the pairing.

Mrs Jones (11)

Minty Hot Fish Skin @ RM 19

Mrs Jones (13)

In-Famous Carbonara @ RM 18 – In creamy sauce with beef bacon topped with poached egg. One of a very simple dish that done to perfection. A dish that so far is quite satisfying.

Mrs Jones (14)

Potato Gnocci (Can be Cream or Tomato Base) @ RM 22 – bacon and mushroom with greens and flavored oil

Mrs Jones (15)

Pan seared Salmon Glazed with Ebiko @ RM 28 – served with potato salad, side salad and basil pesto.

Mrs Jones (16)

Mrs Jones (17)

Dimple Sour @ RM 35 – Hendrinks, Lemon Limoncello, Egg white, Peach syrup

Mrs Jones (18)

Monkey Forest @ RM 35 – Botanist, Maraschino, coconut Juice, Coconut Syrup, Lemon, Passionfruit, Puree, Egg White

Mrs Jones 20 (8)

Aviation @ RM 35, Gin, Crème de Violette, Maraschino liqueur, lemon juice (this is classic Gin cocktail)

Mrs Jones (20)

Went back to classic route to have a Botanist Gin.

Xiao by Crustz is one of a well known dessert shop quiet neighborhood Happy Mansion in Section 17. They have been around for about 2 years and I have always come across mix review about this place.

I have tried Mad Hatter and some readers ask me to drop by to this place for a verdict hence I have decided to drop by recently.

Xiao by Crustz (1)

Xiao by Crustz (2)

If you are here on weekend, do prepare to queue abit if you come on the wrong timing as the place is rather small and cater to only limited dessert hunters.

Xiao by Crustz (3)

Xiao by Crustz (4)

Not only the place is small but their choice of cakes available is also limited. By their cake display counter, maximum will have only 7-9 flavours depending on size and their flavours change accordingly.

Xiao by Crustz (5)

By looking at their dessert, it is very pretty and also a technical dessert by overlaying multiple layers and flavours along. Masterchef inspired ? Maybe…

Xiao by Crustz (6)

This is what I mean limited seatings.

Xiao by Crustz (7)

Well, as they name their item will be on the French baking style as per piece is not cheap. More on the high side.

Xiao by Crustz (11)

Pretty for pictures as we hit on different cakes at different profile given. This is not fried egg on top but done the sunny side up with chocholate is rather impressive.

This is Oeuf @ RM 17 – Yuzu meringue, brownies, chocolate tart, and Passion Fruit.

Xiao by Crustz (12)

This is recommended by the girl at the counter if you like something fruity sweet end. This is Fortune Cat @ RM 18. Choux, lychee jelly, strawberry compote.

Xiao by Crustz (13)

Coffee is not the best thing as I wish can make a take away from cafe next door.

Xiao by Crustz (14)

If comparing Mad Hatter and this place, this place win as the flavor profile is more distinguish and more prominent in layer flavoring.

On the down side is, you are getting a cake at RM 18 per piece which is a bomb to me. I guess I am not the right segment as although I love my dessert alot but going to be my only visit here. For the rest of you, shall let you decide you like or dislike it.

[repost from year 2011] – updated pictures with all broken links.

In this neighborhood, I always thought that the area only I know is on the Food Foundry area that side which only filled with food to hunt. . never did I know that actually there is another small kopitiam area located on another side of it which is quite famous for its lunch crowd among all my colleague and one of the shop that they introduce me which is Hong Seng Kopitiam which is famous for its BBQ Pork (Char Siew) and also their Chicken Rice..

Chicken Rice (1)

Left office around 12.30pm where was told to head there earlier to avoid the crazy queue. When I reach, the queue is already up to the next 2 shop lot.

Chicken Rice (2)

Chicken Rice (3)

Just a simple chicken rice stall like that which is only famous for its BBQ pork can attract many pork lovers out there. Roast pork hanging and the feel and look of it doesn’t attract me much, also decided to give it a try.

Chicken Rice (4)

Chicken Rice (5)

Then we order the Char Siew of 6 pax, that comes in whole big plate like this with a bit mix of Roast pork and chicken was not in the list cuz they said its not good. BBQ pork is good, with burn end is crisp, soft juicy meat that well coated with their own special sauce and I just cant stop eating it. Roast Pork did not impress me that much as I had better ones before, as here the head is not that crispy as I like and the meat is quite dry  even though the meat with fats are my type just doesn’t give me a kick in it.

Chicken Rice (7)

Ahhh, this sure impress all of us, sour and spicy soup, which is quite sour enough that boiled till a bit messy with the ingredients and just lack of not spicy enough. If it had add a bit more of dry chili then would be perfect but no complain as their version win a lot of places.

Chicken Rice (9)

Then I saw next table order some pig innards then I was wondering where to order that, its located behind section operate by a old uncle that sell s porridge and I order pig intestine which is good! Chewy, and flavorful from the soy sauce he is cooking. RM 8 for this portion which is pretty reasonable. . .

Chicken Rice (8)

Our whole lunch meal comes to a total of RM8 per pax after divided out with 6 pax.. which is a good value and satisfy . . I would say, just attack the BBQ pork here, do try out others too if you like . . Just be there early to avoid the heavy lunch crowd at 1pm.

There are no strangers, only friends we havent met. Interesting quote whereby I think it had capture many peoples attention on this. Also read up some of other blog sites mention on the name came across as there are no strangers and they make their service as attentive and friendly as possible hence they are located in this neighborhood.

Menu are pretty straight forward as only a few pages for you to flip on ..

strangers (9)

Order my usual which is Latte and I quite like it as its fill with mild accidic yet can taste the aromatic of the coffee beans. Green tea is definitely very fragrant as its pretty pungent in taste, the only set back to me is the more I drink the sweeter it is.

strangers (10)

strangers (11)

Its dinner but they have all day breakfast set and went for Eggcited Over Cheese @ RM 24.50 – wholemeal crepe, home made tomato basil sauce, chicken chorizo, caramelized onion, baked mozzarella cheese, golden hash brown, sunny side up, rocket.

Since they are pretty well known for their dessert crepe, decided to order Purple Rage @ RM 9. Sweet potato crepe, Japanese Sweet potato, coconut sago pandan infuse with gula Melaka. Very simple presentation that everything is purplish that place ontop of gula Melaka. Its a great dessert, aromatic of sweet potato, coconut and gula melaka are all well balance and could taste all 3 of them equally. I would say worth to try out for this.

No doubt that their service is top notch. If the place is filled up, do have patience in waiting for your food as crepe is not pre made item.

I have pass this road numerous time or nearly a few times a week and could not help to notice this shop when it first started operating around the area as its so near my office. We did came here and wanted to try it over lunch but they weren’t ready that time. This restaurant The Gastro Project is hidden on another side of Section 17 whereby it had gain its popularity among its regular visitor with ample of parking space and easy to be located. Its more like another neighborhood restaurant.

Gastro Project (1)

It might look plan outside as in the inside, its pretty well dress up that makes them a fine dine restaurant.

Gastro Project (2)

The whole ambiance, with checkered floor tiles and some portraits pictures hanging on the wall, sure do give me the feeling of olden days of America or the 80’s.

Gastro Project (3)

The staff are well trained and pretty attentive too. .

Gastro Project (4)

Before dinner start, we were taken to their first floor whereby its more like a flexible space for many people to use on. The place can be coverted into private function, family gatherings, company nights out, corporate events or club gatherings, as both floors can accommodate 45pax downstairs and 30pax upstairs (with lounge seating).

Besides that, on certain day they do have movie night  as their first floor are equip with good home theater system with big screen. Indeed a flexible space. Ladies night is on Tuesday.

Gastro Project (5)

Right before dinner, we were shower with their own house special cocktail by  the mixologist (aka the operations manager Jason Koven , and I must say they are amazing.
AC Martini ( ‘apple crumble’) is something that is not too strong, alcohol taste is just nice that you can taste hint of butterscotch syrup and garnished with a sliced caramelized apple. An easy drink to down with.
The one behind is by the name of  ‘Hmmmm’ which make it a very catchy drink name. Its like what would you want to order sir/madam then your answer is like hmmmmm . .. (then scratch head) . Its made with fresh strawberries, brown sugar, midori, dark rum and almonds. I ended up with 3  glasses. A drink that I would Recommended which is simple yet refreshing.

Gastro Project (6)

Gastro Project (7)

After that, we kick start our meal with Japanese Style Salad @ RM15 – Pine nuts, edamame, pomegranate, avocado and a varieties of greens, pairs with Grant Burge Winery in Barossa Valley, white chardonnay.

Gastro Project (8)

A dish that is really light to kick off with all the healthy greens, with the dressing is just right to match with the rest, burst with aroma and its really fresh and love the peas that match along and of course the white wine pairs well too.

If you want something more mouthful then you can add tempura prawns for additional RM5

Gastro Project (9)

Next of the dish is to pair with this Campagne, bubbly with light sweet end and its really a good one. I do not mind to get a bottle myself as this turns out to be my tables favourite drink for the night.

Gastro Project (10)

Deep Fried Man Tau serve pippin hot.

Gastro Project (11)

When this dish King Prawn flash-fried then cooked in a Buttercream Sauce @ RM40 gets every one excited.

Gastro Project (12)

As the aroma of it really trails thru our nose and make an instant hit that this is good stuff. I love the creamy base of the prawn with butter end and curry spices & leaves is also pretty obvious, and the best thing is dipping the man tau into the sauce and eat it. I just wish they have more sauce and I have more man tau to go on. The prawn is also really fresh with meat texture is pretty hard. Loving it.

Gastro Project (13)

Next we were given a testing plate of their signature that comes with Crab Aglio-Olio Spaghetti @ RM24 for full size. Speghetti is al dante and something light with hint of garlic.

Gastro Project (14)

The lamb was stewed with carrot and apricot, masking the gamey taste, is not bad as the Australian Black Angus Rib Eye @ RM45 for 200g.  already steal the lime light for the whole plate. It was done to perfection that its well marinated, cook medium with a little bbq sauce at the bottom with honey smash pumpkin. Recommended~

Gastro Project (15)

Before proceed to the final one which is dessert we were given this to cleans our palate.

Gastro Project (16)

the finale drink of it as I recently found my love to Moscato as its a very easy drink to go along and pretty universal but this Moscato D’Asti is way too sweet for me.

Gastro Project (17)

For Dessert:
Classic @ RM15 – English strawberry trifle, layers of fresh cream, custard, fresh strawberries and strawberry sauce
Decadent  @ RM15 – Chocolate Cake Balls covered with decadently rich rum cocoa sauce
The Satisfying @ RM15 -Cardamom Pannacotta with Fruit Coulis and if this are chill longer it would turn out to be a great dessert.
What we have tonight are all testing portion as the actual size is way bigger than this. Anyway, if you are looking for a nice place for dinner, this restaurant would certainly be one of it for you to drop by.
