To many Penangnites, I am sure with the restaurant name like Tao Authentic Asian Cuisine that offer buffet range, that have 3 outlets spread accross 2 in Penang and 1 in Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara KL (click here) and now this restaurant chain have opened up another new concept which is rather interesting that located in Penang Times Square called Yea Japanese BBQ & Shabu Shabu Buffet.

One of the reason that visited this buffet was my dad saw some blogger post that circulate in email and he had been asking us to come for the past 2 months since it had open till now we decided to come along.

yea (1)

It is very interesting to see how the whole new concept that they have build to another brand with very Japanese exterior and interior. ..

yea (2)

yea (3)

You can be seated in a few sections, this is a private room that can host up to 10 pax and you have to remove your shoes and put outside.

yea (14)

yea (4)

this section would be their outdoor area. . .

yea (5)

as me and my family was quickly seated, I walk around the whole restaurant to check out what is there to offer.

yea (6)

The range of food that they offer is pretty interesting. One of the best is not to miss on their homemade, fish, sotong and pork ball. . .

yea (7)

Fresh Oyster, Salmon with huge piece, scallop are all in this fridge for you to finish. Another fridge with lots types of seafood, for you to choose from.

yea (12)

This would be the best section to me with variety of meat to offer. I have tried all the meat and those lamb, lean pork, pork bacon, korean style pork are the one you must look out for. . .

yea (13)

yea (8)

Soft drinks counter and you just need to request a glass with ice in it.

yea (9)

Desert counter.

yea (10)

Variety of sauces available as one of the reason that, you are going to mix and learn to cook on the  on with their grill charcoal stove on your table.

yea (11)

ice cream that alot of kids attack on.

yea (15)

We ask on the waiter what soup is good and he recommend that most customer would opt to try their signature soup which is the clear soup base ‘Shabu Shabu’ (昆布柴魚湯)

yea (16)

In your table you will be provided with this utilities for you to play with . .

yea (17)

My meat plate..wakkaka~ and more that I have had till my parents surrender. 😀

yea (18)

What is so unique about this whole new concept is that they have this charcoal grill stove smack right in the table for you to bbq your dish. Most of the meat or things available are already pre marinated and now you will look like a cool Japanese chef in training.

yea (19)

put all the item that you would want on this grill and just turn around as you want.

yea (20)

You can put your huge chunk of salmon, prawns and other seafood to cook along.

yea (21)

Huge scallop to be stim on ..

yea (22)

and this is what happen to our pot of shabu shabu, as my mom loves it.

yea (23)

Each table will come with all these few basic ingredients, one of the reason if you do dine in Teppanyaki restaurant you see those chef add on those pepper and salt, now you are your own chef to do it and play around with these to make your food tastier.

yea (24)

This are the Opening promotion that they have now, and if you can really eat and do not mind getting fat, join their Supper happy hour which is Buy one Buffet at Regular Price and 2nd person 50% which is really worth it.

Among many buffet out there, certainly I am recommending this to go with its price smack on at RM48++ that comes to about RM55 per head that offer lots of seafood and meat for you to eat on. Having great sessions with friends I am looking forward to come back for another round.

Food taste is pretty good and did not disappoint us.

Best advice to call in for reservation that will convenient you.

***Remark you need to spend at least 2 hours to eat cuz of the grill time it takes to cook. Me and my family find that 2 hours is not enough cuz we went for late lunch as they were to close for that hour.

Last weekend, we went down for a short weekend to Melaka and the hotel we stay is superb, Philea Resort (which will blog bout it soon) and while in the resort we skip out for a while before dinner time to hunt for some light food. Jason introduce us this place which is flock by alot people around the town area and also as far travelers from out station. Original Klebang Coconut Shake.

After reaching there, we were a bit curious what is so good about this drink which so many people are queuing up. Then we join the crowd also to see what is happening.

Jason told us that this place started off with just a very small stall and after his coverage in paper and blog, their business had a sudden boom which makes what it is today.

According to him, they are the first to do coconut shake and they have their own style then ask us to judge ourselves what is so good about it.

Starting of with ice pack in a blender, then a few scoops of ice cream, then coconut water then a mini cup of sugar syrup.

Blend it n crush it with with coconut meat that place at the bottom . . .

Then pour into this tube machine. . .

pour it out cup by cup and it looks something like milk shake .. .

You can have it either Coconut Shake PlainRM 1.80

Or Coconut Shake SpecialRM2.30 with additional scoop of ice cream.

The taste of it is quite thick taste like milk shake at first and the more we sip the more normal it taste like and the ice did not crush properly and ice is a bit harsh, actually there is nothing to shout about something simple and I still prefer my Penang style Coconut shake (click here) with a plate of mee sotong which is a RECOMMENDED PLACE if you visit Penang.

So if judge it yourself lahhhh.. and be prepare to wait for 20-30 minutes in line for this cup of drink as we felt its not worth the time to wait.

About nearly 10 years ago when I was studying at Taylor college, one of the stalls that really keep us curious which is this stall called Rojak SS15 that opens its stall after 2pm which located in front of Shell station and when its business start, many people will start queuing to buy Rojak till we decided to join the crowd. As me and my friend are from Penang, one thing that got me and my friend confuse was there wordings, in Penang, Rojak means the food are add on with the shrimp paste not this version, that this version in Penang would be called ‘Pasembor’. Apparently they are one of the Famous Rojak at SS15.

Till last weekend when I was around the area, and I saw how come this stall so many people queuing up for the food only till I realize that it was the Rojak stall which previously located infront of Shell Station and now they have been relocate to this mini area next to Subang Square.

rojak ss15

Now they have several stalls together with one of the Indian stalls that sell there, we feel that they serve like really traditional Indian ‘kuih’ that just came out from the hot wok.

rojak ss15 (2)

rojak ss15 (3)

This is called ‘Vadai’ as the lady sell it very cheap. It taste something like donut, instead being sweet, its abit salty and spicy yet with indian herbs taste.

rojak ss15 (4)

Next is this  masalodeh which I rate it as a type of biscuits. It doesnt taste something like Famous-Amos but similiar as the above just that its crunchy.

rojak ss15 (5)

rojak ss15 (6)

Next to that indian stall, locate this stall which sells drinks, with their availability of Cendul, ABC, coconut drink in this hot weather is surely something hard to resist. Only then I remember that this stall used to stay by the side of the Rojak at the petrol station and now they have move in together.

This lunch time I am really lost and my friend is heading towards Jalan Duta side and was asked to look around where got veggie shop to eat. They have been very nice accompanying me eating Vegetarian food for a few days already. So I found this shop and its on the way of stopping by.

This is the first vegetarian restaurant that I came across that served tim sum too.

The picture illustrated in the menu sure show’s a sign of their quality of food but don know got kena tipu a not.
I love their interior design, very very China feel with wooden chair and table carving designs.
Then we were served with this Enzime as what my friend call. Something very sour and a weird taste but some of them are alright with it. Some of them like yewwwww….
‘Crispy Seaweed Slice’ RM2.50 was served upon with the drink and this thing was gone in minutes. A bit crispy yet have the taste of seaweed.
Then we were given this rice. I don know what it is called.
We order a ‘Set Lunch D’ and it served with ‘Curry Mutton’ with mild curry and the potato taste perfect but the mutton curry doesnt taste anything close to mutton. Would say more like a meat ball.
‘Soup of the Day’ nothing to comment on.
‘Mix Vegetable’ at least it was friend to perfection that manage to preserve the freshness of the vegetable. Mild in taste but I have no complain.
‘Fried Fish Soup + Black Bean Sauce’ is nothing near to what it has describe.Cant really taste the black bean and the fried fish is not really fried.
‘Sweet and Sour Meat’ is also not anything near what it has been describe. The meat that was fried taste and chew more like a fried sotong.
At the end of the lunch they were still not full and ordered the ‘Tim Sum’ as having promotion 30% and after the % it charge at RM15.75. The taste of course cannot compare to the real taste as we usually eat. Only 1 word. Okay lah~
At night I was around that area too and look on the internet and according to the address given, there is not such shop that were printed on my paper. Then only head back to this restaurant.
We order something simple and fast ‘Fish Head Bee Hoon’ which the ginger taste over power most of the ingredient in there but at least 50% same compare to the 1 I dine at Kuchai Lama. RM8
I add on ‘Fried Goose’ which this is the first shop I came accross that sell this. I seldom miss this only in KL its hard to find. Well, its served very thin layer of the fu chuk yet quite oily. RM10
My friend order ‘Tom Yam’ which we felt it taste quite weird. Then only realise that the pineapple that taste weird had spoild the soup base. RM8

When we reach this place, it was already evening. Inside our stomach already pre-occupy with Satay Celup that we thought eating abit ended up taking and taking from the fridge. Now a bit regret.

Choe did work here for a period of time then she mention that this is a good and famous place by the sea. I had some imaginations in my mind as she said that the seafood here not cheap. So given a pre-picture of pricing, thought that it would be a ideal place with restaurant by the sea.

Mana tau when I reach the place, I was like Down! Its’a food court feel. Even the one is Esplanade, Penang is even better with the environment.

Maybe I just came back from Macau not that long, as my concept of Portugese Settlement is something like the concept there. Never thought that it would be totally different.

There are 10 stalls of seafood here. Wonder how they do business. Mini Jakarta..that’s what i thought off. Then Choe said that this stall served better seafood as the first stall is popular with the tourist. Then what I heard the story was very fuuny. If you are a DAP or any opposition supporter they will have conflict with that stall owner. Then I was like har..like dat also can ah..thought is 1 Malaysia?hrmmm…..

The order of ‘Kangkung Belacan’ cost RM 6 taste not any much different from what we eat in any part or any corner.

‘Fried Sotong’ seems to be a bit dissapointed with too much flour is like eat flour more than sotong. RM10

‘Butter Prawns’ if not mistaken cost RM15. Lack of the taste of butter and the kick in it. Its at acceptable level.

‘Lala’ is something slightly better in taste wise, covers with ginger and the chili spicy taste. At least make our taste bud working. RM10

Never a big fan of ‘Bendi’. Pale in taste, prawns nearly not fresh yet okay loh. RM6

Among all the dish, ‘Black Papper Crab’ is the best of all. Fresh slices of crab meat, pangang with black peper powder and some springkles. RM32

In the end, we were quite full from the previous satay. Havent come to a stage with the satisfaction feeling yet.
When we about to go off, here is the amout of crowd that pour into the place. Every of the each individual stall got their very own crowd. By walking around the area, still feel that the food presentation of STall 1 looks better and tempting. Next round I susppose.
This is the stall that located next to this shop.

Its a ‘Mango’ drink. Something very unique yet freshing and appetite oppener. Guess how many cups I drank. If not mistaken 3-4. Its blend with young mango, that’s how the sour flavor got juice out. Very nice. Highly Recommended by me even though you are around the area. RM2.50

Seafood wise, even the price is cheap but the food quality is above average, maybe would encourage you to try other stalls.

Just found these pictures back and nearly forgot about it. Wok café seems to be quite famous and been visited by a lot of bloggers, that created my curiosity on their food quality, as it has been given thumbs up. The shop is also famous with mostly Penang Hawker variety which recommended by most of the blogger.

Then so coincidently my friend from pg came down and known the chef of the café as she told me that they are good friend. Of course gladly I am taking them there which is not too hard to locate.

The shop is decorated in a very classic Nyonya style filled with wooden chair and marble tables which I rate it as a kopitiam style.

So our pesta makan starts.
‘Hokkien Char’ Filled with wok hei, yet pour in the sambal given just add in the extra taste. RM8

‘Char Koey Teow’ Me and my friend enjoying as it was fried to perfection, yet filled with si ham, and prawns. I would prefer if it was a bit more spicy. RM8
‘Otak Otak’ It is soft, with a big piece of fish chunk in the middle but I have eaten a better one. RM4
‘Ju Hu Char’ Was a complimentary by the chef to my friend, which we always take it and wrap with the veggie an eat. A bit sweet in taste but I prefer my grandma’s style which is abit salty.
‘Roast Pork with Garlic’ We enjoy this dish, which is quite a bit sweet and salty, yet the fats of the roast pork are just what we prefer. RM16
The ‘Lorbak Set’ ss one of their signature, is quite big in a roll, fried till crispy on the outer layer filled with meat but I prefer other stalls. RM8

‘Kerabu Mango’ Sweet and sour create sensation on our tongue which is one that I would recommend. RM8
‘Sotong KangKung’ It is quite watery after got served, which they did not dry out the kangkung enough, the shrimp paste have to be added in with some of the chili added to bring in the kick. If the shrimp paste is a bit thicker it would be even nicer. RM10

‘Sago gula Melaka’ RM 3.50 Find it too sweet with the floating layer of santan and thick layer of gula Melaka.
‘Mango Cendul’ Unique in the name which I have not tried before, but just not my taste which the mango doesn’t go along with cendul and gula Melaka. RM3.50
I would say that the service was prompt as the dad were seated next to us which is the cashier, and the dad got quite surprise that 3 person of us eating so much, which is me and another 2 girl.

As overall, I don think I know how to enjoy eating Nyonya food but I would surely return for the Penang Hawker food.

Remarks: please go there early to avoid disappointment which is the signature like Hokkien Mee and Curry mee already finish. Be there b4 8.30
