Street Hawker

Browsing

When comes to Penang hawker food, its pretty hard to resist it. I believe during this holiday season many of you are up in the north to hunt for all these street food. One of my favourite area is this little street that have some variety for you to choose from is this Chulia Street Hawker.

hawker (1)

A place that many food hunters spread that the Wan Tan Mee, Curry Mee and Stir fried (Char Hor Fun, Ee Foo Mee) to die for. Its been a long time since I last came here and decided to drop by again to do a blog post.

hawker (2)

I was so hungry that I order Koay Teow Th’ng and I finish it only remember I have to capture the picture. The soup base is sweet from hours of boiling with bones and the uncle use duck meat that comes to my liking with added little cubes of garlic and pork lard. Perfect.

hawker (3)

I walk further down abit at the little junction then saw this Char Kuih Kak.

hawker (4)

Love mine to add extra bean sprout and ‘Chai Poh’ (salted Turnip) to make it extra umph fried it itn small pieces upon request.

hawker (5)

This is the classic packaging of take away Kuih Kak.

hawker (6)

The smell and look of it wasnt impressive as its not fried dark enough with dark soy sauce, added dark egg suppose to be extra kick turns out to be mild. Not so good as I expected.

hawker (7)

This is good, the stir fried stall next to a fruit juice stall. Need to wait a while for it and its filled with wok hei. I only eat Ee Foo Mee in Penang as the noodle texture in KL are slightly different and the starchy base is also much better in Penang. Added an egg would have been perfect as its semi cook, that mine the uncle forgot to add in.

hawker (8)

Hearsay Curry Mee here are quite good, but I prefer mine that the soup base is slightly stronger and chili paste is in fiery red and much spicier. The taste of soup base here is slightly more mild but definitely have their own regular crowd. You have to wait at least 20 minutes for a bowl.

hawker (9)

Char Koey Teow here is not the best but would not recommend to order.

On that day, more famous Wan Tan Mee stall did not open so didnt try it out as there are 2 stalls here. The better ones are next to the Fruit Juice stall. Average waiting time for a plate is 30mins – 45 minutes. Do have patience when you dine around the area as its one of a famous hawker spot for local Penangnites.

Enjoy street food on next upcoming holiday season.

One thing I love about Bangkok is not only their transformation on public transportation that enable us to access conveniently to many places is that they have all this pedestrian walkway connection all malls and many other main spots as even it rain on that day, we are still able to walk to quite a distance to reach our destination instead of stuck in the mall itself or have to take cab while we are heading to this Taling Pling Thai Gastro Cafe.

I really wish that my country have this that can make the business grow also. Something  similar like Hong Kong. All acess to many malls and public transportation with shades.

Okay, after we head a very heavy lunch steamboat buffet (click here) we walk and shop for the last round before we are heading back as Day 3 we had shop quite alot too (click here on shopping destination in Bangkok)

t (2)

As night proceeds, went back to hotel, shower and came back to this area again as to meet Goft for dinner. She wanted to bring us to another restaurant which is her favourite that often she brings her client to dine there, one of the reason is that after the dinner she wants to bring us to eat the best Mango desert and also to new sky bar around the area.

t (3)

Shopping mall area around Central World that easily have at least 3-5 malls around that area.

t (4)

As evening process when we came back to the same area, we were a bit suprise as now it is packed with street hawker as right outside this nice mall, there’s lots of food there you can hunt for. .

This is the restaurant that Goft want us to dine in, Taling Pling. A restaurant with solid reputation on its home cook style food that offers customer to dine in a very comfort contemporary experience.

Its a thick menu book and best of all, all dish comes with pictures even though IF its written in Thai I have no problem on pointing. Of course the menu do have english translation. Price is very reasonable or on the cheap side for this kind of ambiance.

We do not know what we have order again Goft is incharge of our food menu again.

Preparing money to pay off the meal . .

t (21)

This tomyam is towards more sourish and the fiery red is just a colour. . .

t (22)

Tomyam is our favourite as its spicy, a bit milky taste, something more unique to us.

t (23)

Morning Glory Salad – stir fried vege along with prawns. Perfect to go along with rice, as some veggie had been deep fried then top on top.

t (24)

Spicy Squid, chewy and its fresh, sour at the end and fine chopped chili add the extra spice and minty taste .

t (25)

Pineapple fried Rice

‘Stir fry morning glory with garlic, chilli and oyster sauce’ @ 95 Baht

Overall the food is good, as what Goft mention. Quality is there and prompt service from the crew. Price are very reasonable and if you would want some where clean with nice ambiance to enjoy pretty good Thai cuisine, no doubht that this is one of the restaurant to recommend.

On the down side is, don bother to try on the deserts or maybe I just had tried better ones before during my stay here.

Apologize on the lack of dish name and price.

Penang is already famous for its street food and many other hawkers center are famous to outstation crowd and some are famous among the locals, as once the word spread, the hawker center will enjoy brisk business. One of the hidden gem for Hokkien Mee that I have been hunting for the past few months that often close and now they have reopen back is this 888 Hokkien Mee Stall which is located on Lebuh Presgrave (Sah Tiau Loh – in hokkien means 3rd street) which is one of a famous hokkien mee (prawn noodle) stall among the locals.

hokkien mee (1)

This street is very near to 1st Avenue mall which is like 2-3 streets away from the mall that if you plan to walk here from 1st Avenue, it takes about 10 minutes walk. This hawker center area is located the same street with Kwang Hwa newspaper factory.

hokkien mee (2)

This is the street hawker center of Sah Tiau Loh (三条路小贩中心) which many kind of food to offer with the corner shop is a coffee shop that host many hakwer stalls and those that spill over to the road side. Some of the street hawker food unable to serve food into the coffee shop due to some conflict. It is best you ask them before you order if you are seated inside the coffeeshop.

hokkien mee (3)

Well, anyone of you heard about the recent competition of Hokkien Mee in Penang? It was held at Times Square on December 2011 that  Penang Best Hokkien Mee stalls in the state were spotted and came by to compete to emerge the best as these were voted by the public.  888 Hokkien Mee emerge as crowd favorites and won the best in this catagory (click here for The Star News also to spot top 3 hokkien mee stalls in Penang) I am not sure that the winner of 888 hokkien mee is the same as this or not as they mention near Sunshine Square. and this is at Town area but to me still the same name and take it as another branch. 😀

hokkien mee (4)

Before the wont this category, this stall had already been very famous among neighborhood and since when I was a kid I came by to eat with my grandfather and recently been craving for it so bad and manage to get my satisfaction. In the order you can choose to add on some ingredient like pork ribs, intestine, and others.

hokkien mee (5)

You can add on some ‘siew Yuk’ too but the siew yuk for the day not so nice.

hokkien mee (6)

This is how cramp the place look like that solely sole for Hokkien Mee only. To get a spot is pretty fast as the turn over per table is quite quick.

hokkien mee (7)

This is my order of Hokkien Mee @ RM 3

hokkien mee (8)

Why is it one of my favorite is definitely because of the soup base, its sweet with prawn taste and know that its cook along with prawn shells also, not only that its also cook along with pork bones and meat that make it so nice. It is serve along with small prawns that cook inside the soup for long time and some pork. I wanted to add on some pork ribs and other ingredient was sold out.

It is best advise to go before 10.30pm as most of their add on ingredients get sold out very very fast.

Pricing of add ons:

Normal Noodle @ RM3

Mee @ RM0.60
Egg @ RM0.60
Fish Ball @ RM0.60
Pig Guts @ RM0.60
Pork Belly (烧肉) @ RM1.60
Pork Ribs (排骨) @ RM1.60
Pig Trotter (猪脚) @ RM1.60

hokkien mee (9)

In front of the Hokkien Mee stall comes this very busy Wan Tan Mee Stall also. I see alot of people flock on this stall and decided to give it a try too . . .

hokkien mee (10)

I was sitting there for 45 minutes, and this guy was so busy for 45 minutes and its non stop action. I forgot to take the picture of Wan Tan Mee but I find it nothing much to shout about as the unique is the noodle which is just a bit springy as I have better ones in other coffee shop in Penang.

Overall, if you are in Penang to hunt for very nice Hokkien Mee (prawn Noodle) this is one of the stall highly recommended by me, as during CNY holiday I came here 3 times. . 😀

Penang food have slowly evolve into restaurant and café’s. 7-Village Koay Teow Teng is one of a new introduction to me to this very new shop at Bukit Mertajam in this new area.

7-Village

7-Village (2)

Very well decorated café I would say with indoor and outdoor area to accommodate smokers or during the hot weather in the afternoon.

7-Village (3)

When I see the menu on the wall, the price is pretty shocking, with this kind of place charge street hawker price which is surely impressive.

7-Village (4)

My friend is a big fan of their ‘7-Village Koay Teow Soup’ which told me I must try, yet I think not much choices to choose from but charging at RM 2.70 which I still think you could not get this price any where in this kind of cafe.

It’s a home cook style base koay teow soup, that add in pork chucks and the soup base is pretty sweet by the instant cooking. Fish ball is soft which taste like home made yet I just enjoy my bowl of noodle.

7-Village (5)

Not full after eating that miniature version of it which is kinda Penang style then look at the menu to order more which caught my attention is ‘Loh Bak Traditional’ RM 1.20 and ‘Kwan Jiang Traditional’ RM0.60

Quite impress with how the put their signature by using the chili sauce.

7-Village (6)

The taste of lobak is not bad, just that I have eaten better ones before but I love their ‘kwan jiang’ which taste more like ‘loh pak kou’. Soft and a bit chewy yet dip with chili sauce is good.

After I finish eating and I kaypo a bit in this shop to look what is so special with this shop but one thing sure is very special that now days, most of us are bz working or prefer to use our phone till battery near flat only then charge is to pro long our battery life, in this café, you need not to worry as they have a mini station of phone charger…. Tadaaaaa…..

7-Village (7)

Price is pretty cheap compare with other café’s or restaurant. Do not mind to go back there again for another round.
