The Iron Fairies & Co at Thonglor would turn out to be one of the most famous cocktail bar for 3 reasons. One for their spiral staircase, ambiance and their jazz band. So those of you who love jazz band, you will fall in love with them.. It is easy to locate this outlet as The Iron Fairies is facing main road with well light up neon lights. The only set back or point that you might miss out is the tree at the front walkway might be blocking.

Iron Fairies (2)

As you walk in after the huge wooden door, the place in there is quite dim where is filled with mining lights. I am memorize by the interior decor itself. It gives me the feeling that I have entered into a Dracula or Frankenstein mansion.

Iron Fairies (3)

There are many hidden dark corners where you will see couples are occupying it. It certainly gives you the privacy that you need and jazz music is not too loud.

Since my friend could not drink, where we still have third and fourth bar to go, so we ordered one to share. Smoke in a Bottle #1 @ 330 Bhat comes as a red liquid with captured smoke in it. A glass of ice and blueberries is place in it as a stirrer. It is a bit strong for me with hint of oakiness. Lurving it.

A nice place to chill indeed if you are willing to dig deeper into your pockets.

While night hits at Bangkok, what do you do next? Well, this round I did not hunt for clubs as went to search for hidden bar or cocktail place and apparently I found this hidden cocktail bar in Thonglor in one of a road that house this unit like a second hand furniture shop is this Shades of Retro. Coincidentally, this place is also one of a neighborhood cocktail bar that he frequently visit.

Shades of Retro (1)

There is a potential that you might miss out this place while you are looking for it as the sign board for the bar is so small and the only way to recognize them is this big white led light.

Shades of Retro (2)

Shades of Retro (25)

Space is quite limited in here as there are only about 5 tables and bar seatings.

Shades of Retro (3)

The whole interior is quite interesting as instead of giving me the look of second hand shop, it gives me the feel like I have went into Indiana Jones equipment hunting ground.

Shades of Retro (8)

One of a recommended drink is this Smoke On the Water. Smokiness of the drink to be capture for at least 3 minutes then only you are allow to drink.

Shades of Retro (9)

Upon opening the glass cap, you can smell the nice aroma of smokiness of oak, follow by the nice alcohol infuse in it.

Shades of Retro (10)

For simple oakiness of flavors yet a little strong in taste, then this would be one of your ideal drink. We ended up have 3 glasses each.

Shades of Retro (11)

For the girls, they had Ol-Bitch. Smooth creamy finishing with a touch of sweetness in it. Girls would love it.

What is up in the cheif mixologist is this very interesting shot platter. If I remember correctly – it is called Ko-Kaine. Spill with 3 different types of powder that is prepack in pill form. With one of the capsule is coffee powder

Shades of Retro (19)

Then it is divided exactly like you are taking drugs along with a shot of strong vodka (if I am not mistaken). Serve in a platter of 3 shots.

Shades of Retro (21)

Shades of Retro (20)

You will be given a short straw and you have to suck hard on the powder follow by a shot of vodka. It is a great mixture as it instantly do hit your head but the after taste of it is very aromatic and follow by hint of coffee taste after it. Indeed a platter highly recommended.

We ended up had 2 platter.

Shades of Retro (22)

After those drinks, my friend ordered their beef burger, that he mention is one of his favourite but on that night, it was a let down where taste is not like what he have usually tasted, only realise that the main chef to cook on it taste much better.

Shades of Retro (23)

Shades of Retro (24)

For a side note, their Basil Chicken Rice is indeed a bomb. After some whisky and shots, this dish taste amazingly good. Chicken filled with wok hei, where the sauce is just nice that did not over powering where you can taste the fragrant of fried leaves too.

Shades of Retro (26)

We had alot of drinks that night and thanks to the cheif mixologist for making all our drinks. Our bill was estimated 6500 bhat.

The Market is actually quite an interesting concept where they house many small eateries with their own specialty at this level. It is like a huge modern hipster food court, where all the kiosk are nicely built up.

The Markets (1)

Then at night, my friend brought me back to one of his current hang out spot for drinks which is TBC – The Beer Cap that offers many different types of boutique beers.

This is highly recommended by my best friend- Dan Dan noodle which is his personal favourite that he will drop by at least twice a week to have this. Indeed the noodle is fragrant with special marination of pork and their sauce is indeed very unique. Should not miss out too.

While I was there, The Commons now is one of the best place to visit if you are a cafe hunter, known to many cafe hunter as one of the hotest spot now that house at least 15 F&B joints in this cool building that located in the heart of Thonglor Soi 17. Roast is one of a recommended cafe in this building by my Thai friend, as also one of a favourite brunch place.

Love my cup of Latte @ 100 bhat that suits to my liking as it is mild enough, that give you the nice aroma of coffee which is not acidic.

Roast (10)

Ice Espresso Latte @ 120 Bhat, with ice cube is the concentrated coffee and fresh brew milk at the side, after pouring, gives you the creamy and foamy top.

Roast (11)

Roast (13)

Fell in love with their Truffle Alfedo @ 320 Bhat – homemade tagliatelle is cook to perfection. Slightly creamy, topped with bacon, ham, mushroom and cheddar cheese on top with drizzle of fresh truffle to enhance the taste yet not overpowering. A perfect plate!

Roast (14)

Roast (15)

Their Croque Monsieur @ 34o Bhat  is also done to perfection where a layer of cheese being bake along and top with a sunny side up. Generous in ingredient as is a thick 3 layer sandwich.

Roast (16)

Now I understand why it is well known to many people. Maybe to foreigners and travelers as on my visit, 80% are all travelers or expat. Slightly on the expensive side but still one of a great stop if you are looking for great brunch and great service.
