  • Macallum Connoisseurs @ Gat Lebuh Macallum, Penang.

During Chinese New Year, this cafe Macallum Connoisseurs is the one of the latest hype in Penang. This place used to be a factory and now it had converted into cafe that mark them as the first warehouse cafe kind in Penang.

    macallum (1)

This is not only a cafe as they are a coffee roasters and also they have academy for barista.

    macallum (2)

Ample of seating but during this CNY, they have crazy business and crowd. Average food waiting time is 1 hour.

    macallum (3)

So I pick a place to be seated at the bar as that is the least hunted space among the customers.

    macallum (4)

Variety of cakes to hunt for too.

    macallum (5)

    Spacious seating arrangement.

    macallum (6)

    macallum (7)

This is their roasters room and you can order coffee beans from them.

    macallum (8)

    macallum (9)

Order their latte as quite love the simple aromatic coffee taste with mild caramelise end. Less robust and mild acidity to my liking. @ RM 10

    macallum (10)

Tried one of their signature as the description capture my attention. Macallum’s Coffee Spaghetti – topped with chorizo, herbs and Macallums creamy coffee dressing.

    macallum (11)

Serve in pretty small portion @ RM 18, no hint of coffee taste but overall, taste is pretty decent that spaghetti is cook to al dante, sausage is cook to perfect.

    macallum (12)

Grilled Salmon fillet is decorate with a bed of asparagus is price estimated at RM28 which do cost a bomb for small piece of salmon and just this. Salmon cook to my liking and dressing balsamic onion on top is pretty good. (when the menu mention baby carrot – there is no where to be found in this plate)

Overall, I find food here is expensive for their price and portion served. Coffee is pretty good to my liking. If you do visit here in the afternoon, do get ready to drench in sweat as its huge place, high ceiling yet their structure is build without proper heat prevention from their roof.

IF you do come at night, it would be just nice. Another great place to hang out. Parking here can be a pain in the ass, as quite limited if its full house. Alternative do park at the temple next door.

  • T&CO & Tino Pizza Cafe @ Mid Valley

One of a business man that had seriously made an impact in our bubble tea industry is no other than Bryan that had brought Chatime franchise to Malaysia. Since then his business had grown tremendously that made him the bubble tea king in Malaysia.

Nonetheless from his bubble tea venture, he had branch out to a few more concepts under his belt which is T & Co which is located on level 1 link bridge from Mid Valley to The Gardens, which its location is pretty prominent and hard to miss if you do walk pass by.

    Tnco (1)

    Tnco (6)

    Tnco (2)

T&Co is more like another pop up stalls which decorate well and a very simple wood and steel kind of concept.

    Tnco (7)

    Tnco (11)

cater for simple food and coffee is pretty decent to my liking.

    Tnco (9)

    Tnco (12)

    Tnco (13)

    Tnco (14)

Latte and Mocha which is not too acidic, mild in taste that I would prefer and some say its too mild, and really depends on individual preference.

    Tnco (15)

Certainly I would not mind to come back for a quick cuppa.

    tino (1)

Another new brand under his belt which is Tino’s Pizza Cafe that started small version which makes him another kiosk/pop up stall. This would be his second outlet as their first branch is at Nexus, Bangsar South.

    tino (5)

A special machine with high temperature of 500’c that was customize to make his pizza cook pretty instant which is less than 2-4 minutes long. All dough and ingredients are made fresh.

    tino (3)

    tino (4)

    tino (6)

    tino (7)

Order their signature pizza Mr.Tino which is cook to perfection as normally I do not eat the end crust but I finish this. Love their generous ingredients that added on. Slightly cheesy that I like it, not too salty too and aromatic. Perfect~@ RM 36.90 for large.

    tino (10)

    tino (9)

    tino (11)

Next tried out their Peanut Butter Fries @ RM 9.90. Shower with peanut butter, peanut that makes the first two bites great in taste but as more I eat, it feels pretty full for me. Bacon do add on the flavour as for me, a few is good enough 🙂

  • Helping Communities with Mahsuri

    fa.CSR Poster (NEW)_OL

In December 2014, the East Coast region of Malaysia was hit by the worst flood it has seen in decades, destroying homes and livelihoods and crippling entire villages. As of today, its victims are still left picking up the pieces. In line with Mahsuri’s spirit of giving back to the society, Mahsuri’s latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme will be in collaboration with non-profit organisation, Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) to rebuild and uplift communities affected by the recent floods.

The leading brand in fine sauces and condiments goes all out in this latest Corporate Social Responsibility endeavour as it pledged to donate a full 100% of sales proceeds from every bottle of Mahsuri range of sauces sold at Giant stores nationwide from 26th March to 8th April 2015 to the Programme Desa Lestari organised by Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM).

Mahsuri’s sauces taps into the true essence of Malay cooking that holds high priority in purity and wholesomeness in its daily food preparation. Mahsuri’s range of sauces are certified Halal by JAKIM and are free of preservatives. Mahsuri’s four sauces; Sweet Soy Sauce, Hot Sweet Sauce, Chicken Marinade and Oyster Flavoured Sauce fulfil the need of every kitchen to serve up scrumptious and authentic tasting Malay dishes.

“This CSR is very close to our hearts as we have witnessed the suffering of our fellow countrymen during the floods. We believe that in pitching in towards the development of the flood-hit communities, we can slowly but eventually transition them out of poverty into a healthy self-sustainable community no longer in need of external aid, in the long run,” said Carmen Liew, Marketing Director for Mahsuri, Lee Kum Kee Malaysia.

When the 2014 floods hit the affected states, Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) has been at the forefront in relief efforts, aggressively providing aid to over 40,000 beneficiaries in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. In February this year, Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) took their relief efforts to another level in the Desa Lestari Programme. Under this project, flood-hit villages are developed in five key components to transform it into a self-sufficient community with social facilities and livelihood opportunities. All proceeds raised by Mahsuri’s corporate social responsibility campaign during this period will be channelled towards development of shelters, sustainable livelihood, education, community empowerment, and Disaster Risk Reduction Management in villages under the Desa Lestari Programme.

Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM), established in Malaysia in 2005 provides humanitarian aid in the Asia-Pacific region, it served initially as a fundraising office but is currently playing both roles as a fundraising office (for local & international projects) & field office (for implementing local projects). Guided by Islamic values and teachings of Sincerity (Ikhlas), Social Justice (Adil), Compassion (Rahmah), Custodianship (Amanah) and Excellence (Ihsan), IRM executes community, economic and social development programs in Malaysia where the target groups of beneficiaries include, but not limited to, the poor, orphans, single mothers, senior citizens and the physically challenged.

“With the generous pledge from Mahsuri, we hope to be able to deliver much more in our efforts to transform the villages under the programme into thriving communities with quality infrastructure, ample job opportunities and a healthy economy through local trade,” said Desa Lestari spokesperson, Tuan Zairulshahfuddin B. Zainal Abidin.

  • Restaurant 1998 @ Lebuhraya Tien Teik, Penang

I have always bug my friend to join me for dinner at this place as always, time arrangement did not match till finally during Chinese New Year. Often hear them buzz about this great Curry Fish Head in this Restaurant 1998 (kopitiam) that they serve one of the best in their list.

I stay nearby neither did I know that they are well known for that but finally get a chance to try out.

    1998 (1)

Restaurant 1998 means did they start up in year 1998? yap, this kopitiam was establish since 1998 and been running well with quite a few well known hawker under this roof.

    1998 (2)

One of them is definitely this Curry Fish Head that cook by this auntie. She cooks it individually to ensure the fish taste is enrich in a pot. Curry is being cook aside and just to add on.

    1998 (3)

    1998 (4)

Besdies that, was told that this Chin Kee Chicken Rice is quite well known among them and we skip this round as they die die would want to have Stewed Duck. It is actually the same owner.

    1998 (5)

    1998 (6)

No doubt that their stewed duck is awesome. Duck meat is being braised so soft, own made sauce to complement on it and amazingly their chili is spicy yet sourish end. A perfect combo and recommended. this place cost RM 28.

    1998 (7)

After a long wait of 30-45 minutes, finally the Claypot Curry Fish head arrive and I only can manage to stop them for mere 10 seconds before they dip all the fork and spoons.

    1998 (8)

Fish head is medium size and decent enough as we order 2 pot for a table of 10.

    1998 (9)

Curry is rich in flavours, not too thick yet sour enough and generous with ingredient. It is filled with long beans, ladies finger, egg plant, tomato, squid and others. Spicy enough to make you drench in sweat but not numb.

    1998 (10)

This is how I eat my Curry Fish Head rice in Flood version or locals call it ‘Kuah Banjir’.

Remark: If you do come by for this auntie curry fish head, she is super slow in serving and cooking. Do have patience for her as we were the only customer at that time, already took her 30-45 minutes and friends mention that she is also famous for being slow .

A nice neighborhood kopitiam with variety of hawker food for you to hunt.

Do try the Taiwanese Sausage here too ..

    Restaurant 1998
    Jalan Thean Teik, Ayer Itam
    11500, Penang

  • Claypot Porridge @ Bukit Maluri, Kepong

At times, simple food is really the way to go as I was introduce to this place by my friend quite a while ago. Hidden in this little housing area in Kepong, resides this one whole stretch of mini hawker area and you have variety of “tai Chow’, soup stall and this Claypot porridge is the highlight of the area.

    claypot (1)

More pack compare to any other stalls as might coincidence with rainy day and however, this stall is a family run business. .

    claypot (2)

A short time operating hours only which is from 6pm-11.30pm only.

    claypot (3)

Menu is pretty simple and direct, as all are very decently price.

    claypot (4)

Order Mix Pork Small @ RM 6.o0 with add on century egg at RM 1.00 to make it a perfect pot for me.

    claypot (5)

Order Tong Chai small @ RM 5.50

    claypot (6)

Love the porridge here, whereby they are generous in ingredient, silky smooth like those served in Hong Kong and best of all, they cook individually. Love the taste of it as its pretty strong, add in a little of soy sauce is just perfect.

If you are looking for simple food around the area, I would think this fits pretty well.

  • Alchemist Dessert Cafe @ SS15

Right after work, then suddenly got a message that my friends wanna check out another cafe located at SS15 and decided to join them to chill.

    alchemist (1)

Alchemist is a simple cafe but after move our table to be seated outside, we found that they are a bit lost in identity, whereby they have cool signage, but in the interior is a bit weird.

    alchemist (3)

    alchemist (4)

    alchemist (5)

    alchemist (8)

Drinks nothing much to shout about as I find it more on sweeter end.

    alchemist (6)

    Their pasta is decent only.

    alchemist (7)

roast chicken + pasta @ RM 14.90 is too salty for my liking.

    alchemist (9)

Belgian waffle nothing to shout about. .

    alchemist (10)

After a few items meals was done, decided to give them another chance by ordering their Shibuya Toast – Choco Banana Ice Cream @ RM 14.90

    alchemist (11)

Turns out to be good and if in their menu, this would be only my recommended product. Toast is done nicely, thick enough, ice cream and banana is the add on taste for it.

    alchemist (12)

They have sisha too . .

  • Bedrock Cafe @ USJ, Taipan

Operate by a young chap, Nic with a vision to provide good food quality, this is how Bedrock Restaurant & Cafe came about. Located in this busy district, Taipan, constantly you will find parking is an issue and however, if the food is nice, food hunters will always find their way thru to get into their ideal destination.

On the side note, there is a multi story carpark located right behind the shop.

    bedrock (1)

    bedrock (2)

A cozy cafe that located on the first floor which is directly above Nan Yang Kopitiam, that is filled with natural lighting. Nic know that his shop do have strong sun light during the evening and he is looking to add more nice decor into it.

    bedrock (3)

    bedrock (4)

My Latte is very decent as coffee is not their main concentration as food is their priority.

    bedrock (5)

Started out with Salted Roast Chicken with Mashed Potato @ RM 18. I must say, I am impress with this as its cook to perfection, superb moist and tender texture plus a crisp roasted skin. Slightly salty for me but pairing with mash potato is just right to reduce the taste out.

    bedrock (6)

After some DIY, Bedrock’s very own version of Kedgeree @ RM 12, to me it is serve like a beautiful ship top with some eggs, lemon at the side to add some acidic flavour and also to tone the spices out. This food do beats some of rice that I have tried before.

    bedrock (7)

Another common dish that most of the cafe would start to have is this Baked Eggs @ RM 16 served with in house baked bread slice was a charm, sprinkle with some herbs along that makes it quite flavourful and aromatic. He found a way to make it serve out faster by cooking on the stove.

    bedrock (10)

Portion is decent but quite generous with the ingredient. Flavour is punchy sour and not bad.

    bedrock (9)

Primavera @ RM 15 served in linguine pasta is one of the best to have. Love their sauce, cheese and pasta cook to just right to my liking and portion is decent. – recommended.

    bedrock (11)

For dessert lover, they come out something slightly different which is  Peanut Butter and Jam French Toast @ RM16 topped along with their homemade ice cream.

    bedrock (12)

Love their homemade ice cream as slightly creamy, soft and just nice. Do not mind to come back here for only their ice cream.

    bedrock (13)

Instead of french toast, you can opt to choose the base of  Pancake @ RM 12 served with very lovely drizzle of chocolate on top of the generous scoop of ice cream and banana slice.

    bedrock (14)
