Maple Palace Chinese Restaurant is one of a famous restaurant among the locals, used to be known as Maple Gold. This place had been my childhood place till now. With the owner now who are constantly upgrading their restaurant to create more comfortable dining for their regulars. certainly is one of the best restaurant in Penang.maple goldUsually they have functions on weekend and it is constantly full house. Maple Place offer classic Cantonese cuisine with its owner cum chef is the main person behind the menu. Not only that, with strong demand as more people have traveled across continents coming back with variety of expectation. The owner and team constantly challenge the team and by being creative to design their special new hidden menu which is Modern Cantonese cuisine. All the dishes are require to pre-order 24-48 hours in advance so that the chef team can prepare the freshest ingredient for this.

There are also constant demand on surprise me menu with customer giving them a budget. This have to be 7 days in advance booking and will be more like Omakase style. Diners would not know what will be serving out. It will be a suprise ingredient, style and dishes. So really depending on your budget that you wish the chef to surprise you with. this is also another segment that is growing its popularity besides the classic menu.

This is indeed recommended. Its a entry dish that definitely stir up your appetite which is currently part of their current menu.  Nice bite of mixture of cripsy ice veggie, soft boil prawn. Sauce A great balance of sourish, hint of salty and more like Chinese Kerabu. It is like an uplift of classic veggie. Satisfying entree

For Chinese food, this is defiantely the elevated version. When I saw this, it is like woah, they moving to healthy eating too, as it is serve with bed of barley. Nicely presented with chunk of foie gras just top ontop of the crab.

Love this dish. Look simple yet taste is unique. Hint of truffle that is not ovepowering, with fresh crab meat and  I wish the foie gras to be torch burn to give me exxtra umami flavour, then will be perfecto.

Four Treasure Soup (美宝阁秘制椰皇黄焖四宝羹)

If creamy is not your preference then you can let them know you prefer clear soup. Love this too as the soup is packed with flavour. Simple yet satisfying.

I used to have this dish in sesame seed. Yet they have make a slgiht twist on this by replacing with a unique healthy ingredient. Carefully selected with 4 months corn fed chicken as with this cooking style, it gives you the juicy flavour of chicken. Surprisingly soft even on the chicken breast area. Perfectly cooked as the skin is crispy on every bite.

One of my favourite dish is this Braised Aromatic Duck with Abalone Sauce &  5 Heads South Africa Abalone (鲍鱼汁焖香酥鸭扣5头南非鲍鱼)

Duck just sitted there that looks like a perfectly crips skin which is actaually not. A unique vision that give you a mind twist. Its soft skin is meant to go well with its 8 hours cooked abalone broth. White raddish is superbly good as it is cook in their superior soup stocked.  Duck is cook to perfection, juicy, soft and can even tear the meat with chopstick easily.

Toasted Wild Patin Ulu with Scallion (葱烧油浸野生黑金巴丁)

I have never had wild Patin before and this certaily caught me off guard. Fish meat is so fresh that near to melt in your mouth fish meat texture. (I am not sure is this suppose to be but was told yes). Chef did not want to over do this fish as it is hard to get yet handle with stim and some dressing of fried garlic slices with its special soy sauce.

Never had dishes that in this style. It is fried with white truffle sauce, not overpowering yet egg white can still be tasted.

BBQ Iberico Pork Loin Rib (香料2烤西班牙黑毛猪小排骨)

This is actually one of their best seller. Can be ordered with normal ribs or Iberico. They carefully curate Iberico ribs that suitable with their cooking style. Ribs that gets you finger licking good. Well carramelize, and every mini bite you take is pretty spot on

Boiled Superior Chicken Rice 名鸡*黄油槽鸡王,鸡油饭 ( 3.5kg 7 Months corn fed chicken) ( 3.5 公斤 7个月玉米饲喂槽鸡王)

I must say this is one of the best chicken rice I have eaten over the years. Not to mention those old classic this but this is cook with generous flavours.

Chicken is cook to the right style, soft inside out yet chicken skin is smooth and glistering. Meat is soft and juicy. Soy sauce with some hint of sesame oil is at the right amount.

The most addictive is their chicken stock rice with hint of ginger and oil rice. Once you start its hard for you to stop. just drech it with their side sauce with Chili, soy you can even just finish the rice it self.

I am sure this does not come cheap if you were to compare on those hawker/ kopitiam but indeed will be highly recommended by me.

To end your meal, you can opt for Pork Lard Rice with Char Siew and Egg (黯然销魂饭) or even for your simple lunch to pair with some other dishes. A bowl of rice that is pack with flavours. top with pork lard and char siew sauce is just sweet caramelize that make it even more appetizing. 

For classic dessert you can go with their signature Chilled Mango Sago with Pomelo,  Deep-fried Sesame Ball (杨枝美甘露,芝麻枣)

This will be highly recommended dessert to end with. Chilled Herbal Jelly with Almond  Milk (杏汁龟苓膏) . I am not a fan of almond soup but this is so good. Creamy to a point that I like the taste of almond and the bitterness of Herbal jelly is just a perfect combination.

Fresh Dim Sum at Yong Pin Restaurant at Kimberly Street, Penang is one of a signature dim sum around the area. They have been operating more than 40 years and this current one is their latest upgraded outlet. They used to be operating a street away.

with the new modern classic vibe, certainly do attract alot of tourist too. Offerings here are pretty fresh and more choices than Tai Tong where is also one of my parents favourite which is just next street.

The Butcher’s Table at Sri Hartamas offers a variety of meat for you to choose from. more like cook kinda fresh from the choices you pick. They specialize in fresh pork dishes since 1992 till now. They have another outlet in SS2.restaurant in mont kiaraI think some of you KL peeps might heard of Mr Ho’s Fine Foods in Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC) in the late 1990s. Well, its run by the same owner.

Worst of all you can be noob like me, just flip The Butcher’s Table menu and choose what you want.

If I remember correctly, this dish should be Pork Neck  Chop @ RM 34.65 with Potato Salad. This is really good as cook to perfection. Grill pineapple just add on hint of pineapple and give you a nice bite when you eat along with soft pork neck.

A decent place to swing by to a place to chill and I think BYO is foc or there is some small corkage. Advise to carry one over here to enjoy your porkie night.

Lets start off the food journey of Omakase as the menu for the day (click here). Just note that what is written in here, every dinners might have slight 20% changes or even 50% changes of ingredients from what I posted or even same chef attending to you, the ingredient used for you and other diners also could be dfiferent. That is why the term Omakase. (You do not know!)

Was fun to talk to the chef as the only seating for the night. He focus conversation with my side by showing all the fresh ingredients that got flown in, in the morning it self. Just look at the colour end texture of Uni. Drool

very interesting that how chef play his unique modern infusion style. Some with bird nest, truffle cream, smoked wasabi. The best is, all his flavour combination pairs really well with their house Sake. Fruity, floral and refreshing. It just opens up most of the taste of the flavour profile then end with hint of floral and sweet end. Perfect!

This is the sushi uni with special sushi rice from a province. The sushi rice is actually fatter and shorter than the usual yet chef cook it slightly cooked that give you a nice bite of body texture.

this is super good. The mini lobster is super fresh and it is actually one of their in house best seller. Lobster Kanitama Motoyaki. The meat is so juicy and meaty. Pair with its side dish that just goes super well.-Recommended shiki omakase (5)omakase in pj

Palate washer is very unique as it is actually savory that serve in chill temperature. Yet a nice mixture of sour that cleanse the palate.

This is certainly not your usual Japanese Omakase as Shiki Omakase is the modern Tokyo style. Just go in with open mind and enjoy your food journey. I just located right above Healy Mac or a few doors away from Red Bean Bag Publika.

In Penang there is alot of famous street food, but but but where is the best Char Koay Teow? Again would like to highlight again, everyone have their own taste preference. this Penang Street Food Char Koay Teow In Lorong Selamat Penang run by this auntie is one of a famous char koay teow that many travelers regard as.

best char koay teow in penangShe had been running this stall easily for more than 30  years. Using Charcoal to fried her signature koay teow is indeed pretty good. The only set back is the inconsistantcy.

Also I get to enjoy her slow cooking in charcoal fire filled with wok Hei. This was during last year August 2021 where state traveling is still restricted.street food in penang

till last month April when I was back in Penang and decided to give it a try. The taste indeed quite different to the time I had in CMCO. A pack of this Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow serve with 2-3 big prawns is at RM 11-RM20. Depending you would want to add prawns.

Little did I know that actually Penang do have good cofffee. It was a recent gathering with my friend Kevin that he introduce me die die must vist Stairs coffee which is his all time favourite now in Penang as KL visitor. Love the ambiance as it is not the usual cafe vibe that you got. It is kinda like a bit of bar & cafe combine. I believe they declare that they have the longest bar cafe table in Penang. 

As I scroll on the  menu, Kevin said no need scrool. Order his all time favourite “Dirty Latte” which he misses alot. O

Then for the first time I saw this Omakase Coffee. Usually you heard in dining and here they got it for RM 35 only. GIve it a try lo. Since cheap. Was explain carefully by the barista that you would not know which bean he is using, but with them analysing the drinker, they will then pick the beans which think suits your mood of the day

Follow by a drink that will be transform into 3 different varity in the same cup. That excites me.

Now only I know why my friend most of them are member here and also my KL friend highly recommended here. Indeed you will kinda miss their coffee cuz of quality.
