House of Journey Hostel & Guesthouse is voted as one of the best budget hostel in Penang at Tripadvisor. I also would recommend this place to many travelers out there as the hostel is strategically located.
The property is a 5-minute walk from Kapitan Keling Mosque and a 5 – 10-minute walk from the historical Guan Yin Temple. Penang International Airport is about a 25-minute bus ride away, while the Batu Ferringhi beach area is about a 30-minute drive away. There are many eateries around the area and also 5 minutes walk to my favourite budget drinking joint – Antarabangsa. It is also 5 minutes bicycle ride to the mural area.
Love the ambiance of this simple place as indeed do have heritage feel in it as they are occupying some of the prewar houses.
If you are bored, they do have some okulele and also board games for you to play. Most of the guest here are very friendly too.
At the little mezzanine area above the cashier is a mini sitting or reading corner.
Travel arrangements can be made at the tour desk where Staff or the volunteer at the reception can assist with luggage storage, bicycle rental, airport shuttle and fax/photocopying services.
Very interesting is that they do have volunteer program that is very much suitable for foreign back packers:
Some of their t&C that Ways to volunteer can contribute include:
- Playing music
- Painting murals
- Teaching yoga
- Contributing posts to our Explore Penang page
If you have other ideas, we’re happy to hear them. In exchange for volunteering, we provide free accommodation, lunch and beer! Talk to us when you arrive, or email us at houseofjourneyspenang@gmail.com.
Very interesting customize postcard they have for you to write back to your bestie and family.
House of Journey is divided into two property where one is with mix dormitory bunk beds (where most of the volunteer stayed in for free with exchange of talent services or run the place) and another building as shown above is filled with private rooms.
Room is quite interesting where it is simple and classic yet not too small.
Filled with double bed, with flat panel tv and a Private room that starts from RM 119 ++ a night or RM 89 ++ private room with shared bathroom.
Simple breakfast is provided where they have toast and coffee for your quick going. As for Penang you do not really need breakfast at the hostel as there is alot of hawker food nearby. You can ask reception for direction.
this is the best place which is only 5 minutes walk to from the hostel where you get dirt cheap alcohol where known to many backpackers known as Antarabangsa, where you buy your drink and grab a stool and sit any where along the street or join any of the backpackers group to get to know new friends.
A pretty decent hostel if you are on budget yet want to be in the heritage area, it is recommended. Parking could be a little hard around the area and do prepare to buy some Parking Coupons to place at your dashboard to prevent from gotten summons.
